‘Hmm?
An unknown number?’
Confused, Phoebe Faulkner hesitated for two seconds before answering the call.
The moment the line connected, a magnetic, hoarse male voice came through the earpiece.
“Where are you?”
The voice was familiar, yet she couldn’t be sure, and it made Phoebe Faulkner’s heart skip a beat.
She cautiously asked the man on the other end, “Mr.
Lennox?”
“Come to my hotel room.”
And with that, Jace Lennox hung up.
Phoebe Faulkner stared at her phone, stunned.
“Phoebe, what’s wrong?
Who called?” Kitty asked.
“Kitty, pull over.
I have to take care of something.
You go home and wait to hear from me.”
“What?
Phoebe, where are you going?
I’ll go with you.”
“It’s okay, it’s just a small thing.
Wait for my call.” As soon as Kitty pulled over, Phoebe Faulkner got out, hailed a taxi, and rushed to the five-star hotel where Jace Lennox was staying.
‘She’d left her phone in Jace Lennox’s car before, so it wasn’t surprising he had her number.’
‘The strange part was why he would call her out of the blue and tell her to come to his hotel.
Could it be that overnight, he’d had a change of heart and decided to tell her about her brother?’
Phoebe Faulkner told the taxi driver to get to the hotel as fast as he could.
Finding out about her brother was far more important to her than clearing her own name.
When she arrived at the hotel and stepped through the main entrance, she saw Finn Vaughn—whom she had just met not long ago—standing in the lobby.
As soon as he saw her, Finn immediately came over to lead the way.
“Miss Faulkner, the boss is waiting for you upstairs.”
“Thank you.” Phoebe Faulkner followed Finn Vaughn upstairs.
When they reached the presidential suite, Finn Vaughn knocked.
After receiving a reply from the man inside, he pushed the door open, ushered Phoebe Faulkner in, and then closed it behind her.
Inside the room, Phoebe Faulkner walked towards the man sitting at the desk.
“Mr.
Lennox, did you call me here to tell me about my brother?
Is he…” Phoebe had only gotten this far when the man, who had been writing, slammed his pen down on the desk with a sharp CRACK.
Phoebe Faulkner was startled by Jace Lennox’s sudden action.
“The video of what really happened at the coffee shop and the hospital report.
Do what you will with them.”
Jace Lennox’s face was grim as he tossed both items at Phoebe Faulkner’s feet.
Hearing his words, Phoebe Faulkner looked down in astonishment at the items on the floor before her gaze shot back up to the expressionless Jace Lennox at the desk.
‘The video of what really happened at the coffee shop and the hospital report…’
‘Isn’t this the very evidence I’ve been trying so hard to find?’
‘He called me here for this?’
“Mr.
Lennox…”
“Take them and get out!”
Phoebe Faulkner was at a loss for words.
Phoebe Faulkner picked up the evidence from the floor, her eyes flicking back up to Jace Lennox.
‘Why is he helping me?
If he doesn’t know my brother, why would he help me?
What is he after?’
Phoebe Faulkner opened her mouth, about to ask her questions, but one look at Jace Lennox’s face made her swallow her words.
‘Forget it,’ she thought.
‘I’ll get him to talk sooner or later.’
“Mr.
Lennox, thank you for the evidence.” Phoebe Faulkner turned to leave, but she had only taken two steps when the man’s voice sounded from behind her.
“Wait.”
