Timothy crossed the distance between us with slow, deliberate steps.

Around us, the soundstage was emptying.

Crew members wheeled equipment toward waiting trucks.Full novel: Behind The Camera, Beside My Heart | FIRST DRAFT (FOR FEEDBACKS) — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Someone called out tomorrow’s revised call time over a walkie-talkie.

A pair of lighting technicians laughed about finally getting home before midnight.

Life moved on.

Yet somehow…

Everything around me seemed quieter.

Lena noticed him approaching before I did.

She glanced from Timothy to me, a knowing warmth settling across her features.

There was no teasing.

No dramatic eyebrow raise.

No sarcastic comment.

She simply squeezed my arm once.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.” I smiled gratefully.

“Drive safe.” “You too.” With that, she slung her editor’s bag over one shoulder and quietly disappeared toward the exit, giving us exactly what we needed.

Privacy.

Or at least…

As much privacy as two people could find on a film set.

I looked back.

Timothy had stopped only a step away.

The overhead work lights had already been switched off, leaving only a handful of practical lamps glowing around the stage.

Their warm light softened the sharp edges of his face.

His sleeves were rolled to his forearms.

His dark hair was still slightly messy from repeatedly running his fingers through it during the day.

He looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

His eyes searched mine carefully.

As though trying to judge how much damage today had done.

Neither of us spoke.

There didn’t seem to be a need.

The silence between us felt different now.

Not heavy.

Not uncertain.

Just…

Honest.

Slowly, he lifted one hand.

For the smallest fraction of a second, he hesitated.

Giving me every opportunity to step away if I wanted.

I didn’t.

His fingertips brushed my cheek.

Warm.

Gentle.

His palm settled against the side of my face as though he simply needed to reassure himself I was really standing there.

His thumb traced lightly beneath my eye.

Not wiping away tears.

There weren’t any.

Just…

Checking on me.

A silent question.

How are you?

I leaned ever so slightly into his hand.

His shoulders loosened.

The tightness he’d carried all day eased just a little.

“I’m okay,” I whispered.

His eyes closed briefly.

The relief on his face was unmistakable.

“I’m sorry,” he said quietly.

The words came so quickly it was obvious he’d been holding onto them for hours.

“So…” He swallowed.

“…so incredibly sorry.” I rested my hand over the one cupping my cheek.

“You don’t have anything to apologize for.” “I do.” “You were doing your job.” “I know.” His voice remained low.

“But watching that…” He looked away for a second before forcing himself to meet my eyes again.

“…knowing how uncomfortable she was making you…” A flicker of frustration crossed his face.

“I’ve never felt so trapped on a set.” My heart ached for him.

“I could see it.” “You could?” I smiled faintly.

“You stepped away from her the second Marco called cut.” A tiny huff of laughter escaped him.

“I would’ve stepped away sooner if there hadn’t been three cameras pointed at us.” “I know.” “I wanted to push her off.” “I know.” “I hated every extra second.” “I know.” His forehead dropped forward until it rested lightly against mine.

For a moment…

Neither of us moved.

The world around us blurred into distant voices and rolling equipment cases.

“I kept looking for you.” His confession was barely above a whisper.

“I noticed.” “I wasn’t checking if you were angry.” He closed his eyes again.

“I just…” His fingers tightened around mine.

“…needed to know you were still there.” Emotion caught unexpectedly in my throat.

“I was.” “I know.” “I’ll always be.” He smiled then.

A small one.

The first genuine smile I’d seen from him all day.

“I trust you,” I said softly.

He looked at me.

“I never stopped.” His eyes shimmered with quiet emotion.

“I was never worried about you.” I drew a slow breath.

“I was worried about someone who didn’t understand boundaries.” A weary chuckle escaped him.

“Neither am I.” That earned a laugh from me.

A real one.

The sound seemed to lift something from both of us.

Timothy smiled wider.

“There’s my wife.” “I never went anywhere.” “I know.” He brushed a loose strand of hair behind my ear.

“I just missed you.” “So did I.” For a long moment, we simply stood there, hands entwined, letting the tension of the day slowly dissolve.

The studio around us was almost empty now.

Marco walked past carrying a folder beneath one arm.

He caught sight of us, smiled to himself, and simply called over his shoulder, “Don’t stay too late.” “We won’t,” Timothy replied.

Marco nodded and continued toward the exit without another word.

When the director disappeared through the large studio doors, the remaining crew followed, their conversations fading into the evening.

Soon…

Only a handful of security staff remained.

Timothy looked around the nearly deserted soundstage before returning his attention to me.

“So…” He smiled sheepishly.

“I believe I owe my brilliant manager-and my incredibly patient wife-a proper dinner.” I raised an eyebrow.

“An apology dinner?” “Several.” “And dessert?” “Absolutely.” I pretended to consider the offer.

“Hmm…” He watched me nervously.

I couldn’t keep the act going.

Smiling, I slipped my fingers fully through his.

“I think I can accept that.” His expression brightened immediately.

“Really?” “On one condition.” “Anything.” “No talking about today’s shoot.” He blinked.

“No scripts.” He nodded.

“No call sheets.” “Done.” “And absolutely no discussing Elara Vance.” His answer came without hesitation.

“Gladly.” I laughed.

“Good.” He lifted our joined hands slightly.

“Then let’s go home.” Home.

The word wrapped around my heart more warmly than any apology could.

The cameras had stopped rolling.

The costumes would be packed away.

The fictional romance would stay locked inside tomorrow’s footage.

But this…

The quiet walk toward the parking lot, hand in hand with the man who never once let fiction become reality…

This was real.

And no performance could ever compete with that.
