Day 8 – The Secret of the Well
Zeynep looked at the old map in her hand again.
In the bottom left corner, a faded seal:
“Darülaceze Well – 1946”
There was a single sentence written in shaky handwriting across the top of the map:
> “I hid it at the bottom of the well; but I never let it be forgotten.”
Zeynep read this sentence over and over.
Şefika’s eyes filled with tears.
“That well… was our silence,” she said.
“Inside that well is not just an object, but a truth.”
The next morning, Zeynep set off with Şefika toward Istanbul.
As she looked out of the train window, she drifted into thought.
Something within her was slowly unraveling.
Painful, but sweet...
Like someone’s prayer.
Like a mother’s sincere, unseen, unshakable prayer...
When they arrived in Istanbul, the address on the map led them near Hasköy.
At the end of an old stone path that opened into the backyard of the Darülaceze,
stood an old stone well covered in wild ivy.
When Zeynep reached the well,
Şefika, standing a few steps behind, said:
“Only a brave one can look down there.
And it wants to see if you still carry hope.”
Zeynep slowly lifted the stone cover.
The inside of the well was dark.
But when she looked carefully...
She could make out a shimmering chest below.
Aside from a rotted rope and a rusty hook,
the only way down into the well was courage.
At that moment, a child’s voice echoed in Zeynep’s mind.
It was her own voice:
> “Did my mother forget me?”
“Why did they leave me?”
“What did I do wrong?”
Zeynep closed her eyes and prayed:
> “O my Lord…
Even if I must descend into darkness,
I will descend carrying Your light.”
With courage, she held onto the edge of the well,
and began to climb down carefully.
When she reached the chest, her hands were trembling.
She opened the lid.
Inside…
An embroidered baby blanket,
an old Qur’an,
and a small box with a silver handle and a mirror.
Inside the box,
a small note:
> “To the one who gave birth to me,
and then disappeared...
I have forgiven you.
Because now, I too am a mother.”
— Zeynep
Tears rolled down Zeynep’s cheeks.
This note… was in her own handwriting.
But it was something she had never written before.
As if the broken child inside her
had finally spoken.
Zeynep climbed up from that dark well
as a different woman.
Şefika approached her and held her hand:
“Did you find it?”
Zeynep smiled through her tears:
“No… I remembered.”
But that night, in the house where they were staying,
Zeynep noticed something inside the Qur’an.
Among the pages of the Qur’an from 1946,
a letter was hidden.
Fatıma’s final letter.
And at the end of the letter, it said:
> “Hope is not hidden in a well, my daughter.
Hope is in the one brave enough to seek it.”
To be continued…
