Day 9 – The Fragile Mirror

As Zeynep held the yellowed letter she had found inside the Qur’an,

The edges of the letter were frayed like ash,

its words written as if in a whisper:

> "I know you’ve been looking for me, my daughter.

I didn’t leave because I abandoned you—

I left to protect you."

These words, written by Fatıma’s hands,

pierced through years of silence like a blade.

Zeynep was no longer angry with her mother—

she was trying to understand her.

Şefika quietly placed something next to the letter:

a small hand mirror.

Its back was inlaid with mother-of-pearl,

its glass rim cracked.

When Zeynep looked into the mirror,

she saw someone else in her own eyes.

The face was made of shadows, but the eyes...

they were filled with the same hope as hers.

“This was your mother’s mirror,” said Şefika.

“She always carried it in her pocket.

Not to check her face,

but her heart.”

Zeynep held the mirror in her palms.

Suddenly, her vision darkened.

Another image appeared before her eyes…

It was a rainy night.

In the dark streets of Istanbul,

a woman carried a small girl wrapped in a baby blanket.

Zeynep couldn’t see her face,

but the woman’s prayer echoed in her ears:

> “My Lord, if my life is worth less than hers,

then take me—

but protect her.”

This prayer burned through Zeynep’s heart.

Her mother hadn’t left her…

she had entrusted her.

To God.

Zeynep opened her eyes.

This time, she saw her own eyes in the mirror.

But they were clearer.

Deeper.

“Who am I?” she whispered.

“Am I my mother’s daughter? An orphan? Someone abandoned?”

Şefika sat beside her.

They were silent for a while.

Then Şefika said:

“You are a heart left with a prayer,

and called back with patience.”

That night, Zeynep placed the mirror under her pillow.

And for the first time,

she slept without fear.

In her dream,

her mother was waiting for her in front of a graveyard.

She held a small lantern.

The light of the lantern glowed brighter

as Zeynep got closer.

> “Come,” said Fatıma,

“but first, recite a Fatiha for your own past.”

Zeynep awoke at the sound of the morning adhan.

Her heart was trembling slightly,

but for the first time,

there was a deep peace within her.

She picked up the Qur’an,

placed the mirror in her pocket,

folded the letter again,

and whispered gently:

> “Bismillah…

Today I’m not going to find my mother—

I’m going to find myself.”

But the secret awaiting her

was much older than she had imagined—

and more dangerous.

To be continued…
