Jiang Yin tightened her hand and looked away. “I’m sorry. Please step outside. It’s hospital policy.”

“Policy?” The man’s voice dropped coldly. No one else understood what he meant, but she heard the faintest hint of warning in it. “Hehe is pregnant, and now she’s injured. I won’t feel at ease unless I’m by her side.”

He was worried she might have ulterior motives—that, out of jealousy toward Sang He, she might hurt Sang He and the child in her womb. He was insulting her professional ethics as a doctor to the utmost.

“Brother Yunchuan, I’m fine. Don’t make things difficult for the doctor…” Sang He clutched at Fu Yunchuan’s sleeve, looking pitiful. She couldn’t help feeling a rush of sweetness. How could she not be happy when the man she loved cared for her so much?

The man’s expression softened at once. “I’m just worried about you and the baby.”

With the baby involved, it was no small matter. Fu Yunchuan didn’t argue further. He patted Sang He’s hand and reassured her gently, “I’ll step out for now. I’ll come back to see you in a little while.”

Jiang Yin lowered her eyes, hiding the feelings in them and refusing to look at the intimacy between the two of them.

The examination was quick. The baby in Sang He’s womb was stable, and there was no bleeding. She could go home, get plenty of rest, and return for regular checkups to ensure the pregnancy remained stable.

Fu Yunchuan, however, disagreed. His expression stern, he turned to Jiang Yin and ordered, “You can’t be careless about something like this. Arrange a hospital bed for her.”

Sang He couldn’t hide her embarrassment. “The doctor said I’m fine and can go home to rest. Isn’t this making too much of it?”

The man frowned, showing Sang He meticulous care and concern. “When it comes to your safety and the baby’s, nothing is trivial. I’ll listen to you about anything else, but on this, you have to be a good girl and listen to me, all right?”

Jiang Yin didn’t expose him. She had no way to, either. He certainly did a good job of protecting his young girlfriend’s innocence.

A sharp pain pierced her heart. She had no desire to watch them dote on each other. The longer she looked, the more those years of marriage seemed like an empty dream, and the more she felt like a clown—a joke.

All the years she had devoted herself to him couldn’t compare with the few months he’d known Sang He.

Jiang Yin let out a quiet breath and called to a nurse, “Little Chen, arrange a bed for Miss Sang.”

“Will do, Director Jiang,” Little Chen replied promptly.

As soon as Jiang Yin left, Sang He began chattering away, as if she’d opened the floodgates:

“Brother Yunchuan, do you know? That Director Jiang just now is amazing. She’s a doctoral supervisor at Jinggang Medical University, and I heard she has two degrees. She went straight into a doctoral program and was always recommended for admission. She was once hailed as a genius doctor on par with Zhou Mingting, and people said they were a perfect match. She’s incredible! They’re practically role models for medical students.”

Sang He’s face was full of admiration. She didn’t notice the change in the man’s expression at all.

“Brother Yunchuan, why aren’t you saying anything?”

He smiled. “She’s just okay. In my eyes, you’re the most impressive, Hehe. I’ll go take care of your admission.”

Sang He’s cheeks flushed. “What are you talking about? She has two medical degrees. How could I compare…?”

Jiang Yin hadn’t gone home the night before; she’d slept at the hospital.

A little after six in the morning, not long after she woke, a knock sounded outside her door.

When she opened it, she saw Sang He smiling at her. “I’m not disturbing you, am I? I came especially to thank you. You worked overtime at the hospital in the middle of the night to treat me, so I brought you breakfast to show my gratitude.”

The young woman had clear, delicate features, and her words brimmed with youthful energy—the kind of innocence Jiang Yin herself no longer had.

That innocent charm could leave a man utterly captivated. No wonder Fu Yunchuan liked her.

Jiang Yin wasn’t in the habit of accepting food from patients.

Before she could refuse, the young woman chattered on again. “Please don’t turn me down. My boyfriend made this himself early this morning. It’d go to waste if you didn’t eat it.”

At the mention of her boyfriend, Jiang Yin froze.
