Minoru Kagenou and Sora Kagenou were both university students, already over eighteen.
Akane Nishino was eighteen too.
For the next week, they kept their heads down at school, acting like strangers in class.
After school, they trained their bodies.
At night, they chased down biker gangs and beat them up.
The bikers couldn’t win a fight, but they were sore losers.
They kept loitering around the neighborhood every day, but the moment they saw Minoru Kagenou and Sora Kagenou, they turned tail and ran.
To protect themselves, every single one of them started wearing heavy-duty helmets.
But every time, two or three unlucky ones still got caught and thoroughly beaten.
During class, Sora Kagenou often read other books — Andersen’s Fairy Tales, economics texts, ideas for creating electronic products.
As for the piano, Sora Kagenou of the Kagenou family could play that too.
That day, Minoru Kagenou and Sora Kagenou stayed at school until dark, as usual.
Minoru Kagenou played a piano piece.
Sora Kagenou read his book.
At the school gate, Akane Nishino held her phone and made several calls.
None of them connected.
Ten minutes earlier, her driver had gotten into a scrape with another car.
It was entirely the other guy’s fault.
When the driver tried to discuss the accident, the guy threw a punch.
After making calls for a while, Akane Nishino looked at the sky.
It was already late.
Maybe the driver had run into trouble and couldn’t make it.
She decided to walk home alone.
Just as she left the school gate, Minoru Kagenou’s piano piece stopped.
The two exchanged a glance, left the piano room, and locked the door.
“The night is about to fall!
Darkness will cover the earth!”
“The strongest in the darkness, the dashing thug killer — is about to appear!”
Minoru Kagenou said one line.
Sora Kagenou followed with the next.
Honestly, Sora Kagenou was so embarrassed he wanted to dig a hole and disappear.
Too chuunibyou.
But he had to do it.
Building a good relationship with Minoru Kagenou was the only way to get a chance to travel to another world together.
They walked home.
Akane Nishino was about 200 meters ahead.
She turned into a small alley.
As she walked, an eerie wind blew past.
She felt something behind her.
She turned around.
Nothing.
“Just me scaring myself!”
She turned back and bumped into a broad chest.
“Sorry, I didn’t see you!”
She stepped back and said it.
The man was tall and sturdy.
“You’re Akane Nishino, right?”
The words hit her like a flashback.
Memories of her childhood kidnapping surged up.
She turned and ran without a second thought.
The big man didn’t move.
A commercial van came speeding straight at her.
Akane Nishino stared at the blinding headlights in despair.
The van drifted to a stop in front of her.
A guy who looked like a thug opened the door and stepped out.
He grinned at her with a lecherous look, then ran straight for her.
“No…
don’t…
he…
lp!”
She tried to scream, but before the sound left her mouth, he pressed a handkerchief soaked in anesthetic over her face.
She couldn’t make a sound.
Within seconds, her consciousness faded, and she passed out.
In her last moment before blacking out, she saw two people at the end of the road.
Two harmless-looking students.
When she woke up, she was inside a warehouse.
The thug looked at her with an evil grin.
“The text has been sent.
Once the money comes in, we’ll let you go,” the big man said.
The thug kept grinning at her.
“Before we let you go, let me have some fun first.”
“A fool controlled by his crotch,” the big man said with disdain.
The thug glanced at him but didn’t respond.
He knew the man’s strength well enough.
“Quiet night.
Perfect for some wonderful things.
Hehehe.”
He started tearing at her clothes.
Outside the warehouse, Minoru Kagenou and Sora Kagenou stood at the entrance.
They had changed clothes and disguised their faces.
Both were dressed in black.
Minoru Kagenou climbed up to the skylight.
Akane Nishino, struggling on the ground, looked up at the figure in the skylight and stopped moving.
Minoru Kagenou stomped down.
The skylight shattered.
He and the glass fell together.
The noise startled the thug.
He stopped what he was doing.
All three people in the warehouse turned to look at Minoru Kagenou.
“Who are you?” the thug shouted in surprise.
The distance from the warehouse roof to the floor was a full 5 meters.
The guy just jumped straight down.
“The dashing thug killer.”
“Whoever you are, go to hell!”
The thug raised his pistol.
But before he could pull the trigger, a flying knife stabbed through the back of his gun hand.
The pain was so sharp that the gun dropped to the floor.
The thug turned to pick it up, but Minoru Kagenou didn’t give him the chance.
He closed in at incredible speed.
“Your body’s full of wasted movements.
Your reaction’s too slow.”
He punched the thug in the stomach.
The thug doubled over and hit the ground.
As he tried to get up, Minoru Kagenou stomped on his face.
Blood splattered.
The thug passed out cold.
“Not bad, dashing thug killer.”
The big man raised his pistol and aimed at Minoru Kagenou.
Then he tossed the gun aside.
“It’s been a long time since I left the military and met an opponent who gets me excited.
I hope you can give me a good time.”
“I’d like to fight a soldier too.”
The big man drew a dagger and lunged.
They traded blows back and forth.
“Just as I thought — only killing gets me excited.
Welcome to this crazy world!”
With the roar, his knife swings grew faster and faster.
Minoru Kagenou blocked with a crowbar while looking for an opening to counter.
“I’ve found that a crowbar is a really useful thing.
It’s sturdy, works like a baton, and if a cop stops you, you can talk your way out of it.”
He talked and fought at the same time, knocking the big man’s dagger away.
“I’ve figured out the crowbar’s potential.
Just use the hooked end to hit people, concentrate all the force into one point, and you can unleash a lot of power.”
As he spoke, he adjusted his grip on the crowbar.
One fierce strike slammed into the big man’s hand.
Then it was a one-sided beating.
Strike after strike, blood flying everywhere.
Sora Kagenou had already reached the thug.
He took both guns and ejected all the bullets.
Then he untied Akane Nishino’s ropes.
She was dazed.
By then, Minoru Kagenou had finished the fight.
The big man lay unconscious.
“Be more careful on your way home next time.”
That was all Minoru Kagenou said.
When Akane Nishino came to her senses, both of them had vanished.
“Thank you, dashing thug killer.”
She said it out loud.
