The plan for Johnny Tran brewed in Dom’s mind.

But action needed timing and intel.

In the waiting days, the Toretto Garage kept running, though a new tension hummed beneath the surface.Full novel: Fast & Furious: I Tuned Dom’s Charger and Stole His Sister — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Brian O’Conner was sinking into this family’s gravity faster than he’d ever expected.

Tuesday morning, Jesse’s wrecked Honda was towed in.

The front end was destroyed.

Shattered headlights.

Dented hood.

A spiderwebbed windshield.

Jesse stared at the damage, cursing Johnny Tran’s name.

“Enough standing around.

Let’s work.” Dom clapped his hands.

Quick.

Direct.

He and Jesse assessed the damage.

Letty and Vince started pulling off the broken parts.

Brian watched them, then stepped forward.

“What do you need me to do?” Dom glanced at him and handed over a set of wrenches.

“Take off the front bumper.

Watch the brackets underneath.

They might be bent.” A small sign of trust.

Brian took the tools and got to work.

He’d trained for undercover work, including basic vehicle repair.

His moves weren’t as raw as Vince’s, but they were clean and precise.

Jake worked on the other side, checking the wiring and radiator.

His hands moved with surgeon-like precision through the tangled lines.

“Hey, Brian.

Toss me the small wrench.” Vince grunted, fighting a rusted bolt.

Brian found it and threw it over.

Vince caught it, looking surprised.

“Thanks,” he muttered.

Simple.

But it was the start of acceptance.

The work stretched through the morning.

Mia brought lunch and cold drinks.

She handed Jake his usual brand of water, then passed one to Brian, who was sweating hard.

“Thanks, Mia.” Brian smiled, genuine and warm.

Mia smiled back.

It wasn’t the special smile she gave Jake, but it was friendly enough.

By afternoon, the damaged parts were off, and new ones started going on.

The mood lifted.

Rock music played from the radio.

Vince started humming along.

“Hey, O’Conner,” Vince said, tightening a headlight bolt.

“You move better than my grandma.

Where’d you learn?” The question had the usual street edge.

Letty and Jesse slowed their work.

Dom didn’t look up, but he was listening.

Brian’s internal alarm flickered.

But his smile stayed easy.

The cover story rolled out smooth.

“Spent some time in Florida.

Ran with a crew down there, picked up a few things.

Got bored, so I drove out to Cali to see what’s what.” “Florida, huh?

Heard they don’t mess around down there.” Vince grinned, seemingly satisfied.

“Ha, you have no idea,” Brian said.

He shared some stories about Florida rides and races.

Half true, half fluff.

It satisfied their curiosity and built his “drifter” image.

Jake worked quietly nearby, listening.

He could hear the caution in Brian’s words.

But he also saw the real light in his eyes when he talked about cars.

That wasn’t fake.

By evening, Jesse’s car was reborn.

Better than before.

Jesse circled it like a proud father, nearly tearing up.

“Amazing!

Thanks, everyone!” His voice cracked.

Dom patted the hood.

“We’re family.

Remember that.” His words carried weight.

His gaze swept over everyone.

Including Brian.

Including Jake.

It was an offering of belonging.

To celebrate Jesse’s restored ride, and to shake off the tension, Dom called another backyard barbecue.

This one felt easier.

Brian wasn’t the awkward observer anymore.

He helped Letty start the fire.

He argued shocks and struts with Jesse.

He even drank with Vince.

Though by the look of their stomachs, Brian was out of his league.

He lost fast, and Vince howled with laughter.

Jake and Mia sat off to the side, sharing a plate of sausages.

Mia watched Brian blend in.

“Brian’s not so bad,” she murmured.

Jake nodded.

His eyes followed Brian, who was tilting back a beer.

He could feel it.

Brian was playing a role, but real emotions were bleeding through.

His help was genuine.

His anger at what happened to Jesse wasn’t entirely an act.

Night settled in.

The party wound down.

Brian was a little drunk, leaning back in his chair, watching the yard.

Dom and Letty talked softly.

Vince and Jesse bickered about something.

Mia was laughing, stealing a burnt piece of corn from Jake’s plate.

A strange warmth wrapped around him.

Different from the academy.

Different from FBI training.

Looser.

Wilder.

More real.

No ranks or rules.

Just people bound by shared passion and a promise to watch each other’s backs.

“Hey, Brian.” Dom walked over with two fresh beers, handing one over.

“Good work today.” Brian took it.

The cold bottle felt good.

He met Dom’s sharp eyes in the dark and felt something twist in his chest.

This man was his target.

A criminal.

But right now, he felt like a brother.

“Thanks, Dom.” Brian clinked his bottle against Dom’s.

Foam splashed onto his hand, cold and stinging.

He drank deep.

The cold didn’t quiet the heat rising in his chest.

The bonds were tightening.

And the weight of his lies was growing heavier with every shared moment.

When the truth finally came out, every moment of warmth would cut like a blade.

But right now, under the LA stars, he let himself forget.

Just for a moment.

He sank into the warmth of this false, beautiful family.
