Chapter 474: Arriving at the Royal Castle

Brother Alex and Sister-in-law Daniela were at a loss for an answer.Full novel: Frontier magic pharmacist — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Was it truly acceptable to establish ties at the national level? If that happened, Sister-in-law Daniela would become our representative, and anything that went wrong could become the responsibility of the entire Spencer Kingdom.

Nor was the kingdom the only concern. House Heine, which had accompanied her, could also be held responsible. We ought to refuse. I was about to say so when Princess Sophia spoke first.

“The meeting with His Majesty will be treated as strictly confidential. Nothing will be made public. We will simply say that an acquaintance of His Majesty came to visit.”

“In other words, everything discussed and everything that happens there will be treated as though it never occurred, correct?”

“Yes. Exactly.”

It seemed that His Majesty genuinely wished only to offer his thanks. In that case, perhaps accepting would be all right. Brother Alex and Sister-in-law Daniela exchanged a glance, and Sister-in-law Daniela nodded. They had decided to accept.

It appeared our return home would be delayed, but there was no helping it.

“Under those conditions, we accept. Please ensure that it is treated purely as a private meeting.”

“Of course.”

Princess Sophia bowed deeply and left. She probably had not wanted to make this request either. She may have wished to refuse her father but found herself unable to do so. Between this and Sir Erwin’s situation, she must have been under tremendous strain. I hoped she would not collapse.

“How far is it from here to the royal capital?”

“About three days by carriage. It appears the preparations have already been made.”

“That’s fine. We were ready to return, so we can leave at any time.”

Princess Sophia—or rather, the Kingdom of Raven—had already completed the preparations. The next morning, we set out for the royal capital. Our party, now with more carriages and travellers, proceeded towards the city.

“Will Julius be all right?”

“Brother Alex sent a letter to House Heine yesterday, so they should understand the situation to some extent. It will still take time before Father and Mother learn the details. I wish Lady Fabienne could have told them, but that was impossible.”

Nero looked troubled, and I probably wore the same expression. Had I known this would happen, I would have given my parents something like the communication ring I had given Lady Fabienne. However, such a magic tool could be extremely dangerous depending on how it was used, so I had not made another.

If people could communicate freely from anywhere, the technology would inevitably be used in war. It would also make assassinations and espionage far easier. Such a thing should not exist openly in this world.

While I was thinking about that, the carriage arrived safely in the royal capital. At first glance, it appeared slightly smaller than the capital of the Spencer Kingdom.

“It seems we’re heading directly to the royal castle.”

Lionel reported after confirming the carriage’s route. His expression was as tense as that of a knight facing a monster. Apparently, I was not the only one who felt uneasy.

“I see. Then we had better leave the curtains closed.”

I wanted to see the city, but it was probably better not to let too many people see our faces. If word spread that guests from another country had arrived, rumours would quickly follow.

After a while, the carriage stopped. We had evidently reached our destination. Lionel immediately checked our surroundings.

“There do not appear to be any problems, but please remain cautious.”

“Understood. I’ll be careful.”

Lionel remained extremely wary. Perhaps he suspected a trap intended to capture us. It was possible. I braced myself and resolved not to lower my guard. If anything happened, I would fight back without hesitation.

“Julius, are you tired?”

“I’m fine. I’m becoming accustomed to travelling by carriage.”

Sir Erwin spoke to me the moment I stepped out of the carriage. Brother Alex and Sister-in-law Daniela were nearby as well, and everyone seemed to have arrived safely. Several servants were already waiting near the castle entrance.

“This is your first visit, Alex and Julius, isn’t it? Welcome to the royal castle of the Kingdom of Raven.”

Princess Sophia welcomed us with a smile. There was no malice in her expression, and no sign of a trap. Guided by Princess Sophia, Sir Erwin and the servants, we entered the castle.

Rather than the castle’s public areas, we appeared to be heading towards the royal family’s private quarters at the very back. Was it really acceptable for visitors from another country to enter such a place?

We were then shown to our guest rooms. The interior was extremely luxurious, but Sister-in-law Daniela was royalty, while Brother Alex and I were sons of a margrave, so it felt almost ordinary. Habit was frightening.

“Will we meet His Majesty immediately?”

“You have only just arrived and must be tired from the journey, so I believe the meeting will be tomorrow.”

“I see. Sister-in-law Daniela, what kind of person is His Majesty?”

I asked hesitantly. If he was strict, the meeting would be exhausting and wear away my mental strength. I would have preferred someone more easy-going.

Sister-in-law Daniela considered the question. He must have been somewhat strict. I had better speak as little as possible.

“He can be strict, but I believe that is simply the role he must play as king. When I met him privately, he seemed like a father who cared deeply for Princess Sophia.”

“I see.”

If that was true, did he oppose Sir Erwin’s wish to marry Princess Sophia? Or did he secretly support them because it was what his daughter wanted?

Since he had entrusted Sir Erwin with the Holy Sword, the latter seemed more likely. In that case, perhaps he truly did only wish to thank us.
