Chapter 473: The Legend of the Kingdom of Raven’s Holy Sword
Princess Sophia and Sir Erwin entered the guest room and bowed deeply in unison. They remained that way for quite some time. Since neither Brother Alex nor Sister-in-law Daniela said anything, I stayed silent as well, although inwardly I was wondering whether someone ought to tell them to raise their heads.
Brother Alex and Sister-in-law Daniela apparently believed that allowing the pair to bow like this would settle the debt and wipe the slate clean.
After a long while, the two finally raised their heads.
“We truly do not know how to thank you.”
“Words cannot express our gratitude, but please allow us to say it nonetheless. Thank you. Thanks to all of you, we survived.”
They bowed deeply once more. This time, even Brother Alex could not remain silent and asked them to raise their heads. Sister-in-law Daniela joined him, and together they managed to stop the second bow from lasting as long.
Once everyone had finally calmed down, we asked what had happened. Naturally, the discussion was to remain strictly confidential, and the servants had been sent out of the room.
“A Bone Dragon appeared on Mount Lokomo. The surrounding land and rivers have been contaminated, and a wide area remains in critical condition even now.”
“We attempted to defeat it, but we were utterly repelled. It is a shameful tale.”
“It wasn’t your fault, Er.”
Princess Sophia said it lightly, but Sir Erwin’s eyes revealed his deep frustration. A Bone Dragon, huh? Unless it was destroyed all at once, its regenerative ability would gradually wear its opponent down. It had to be struck with overwhelming force in a single attack.
“Challenging a Bone Dragon was extraordinarily reckless. Did you have any kind of plan?”
Brother Alex’s eyes held a trace of anger. He probably considered charging in without a solid strategy the height of foolishness. I agreed. No number of lives would be enough for that, and if Sir Erwin died, Princess Sophia would be left only with grief.
“Well, that is…”
“Of course we had a plan. We used the Holy Sword kept by our kingdom. However…”
Princess Sophia hesitated. Whoa—was it really all right to reveal that the Kingdom of Raven possessed a Holy Sword? Sir Erwin, sitting beside her, looked as though his eyes might pop out. Perhaps he had avoided mentioning it because it was a state secret.
“So the story of the Holy Sword was true? That is surprising. Yet even with it, you could not defeat the Bone Dragon, correct?”
Sister-in-law Daniela apparently already knew that the Holy Sword existed. That was probably why Princess Sophia had chosen to mention it. Still, a real Holy Sword… I had encountered them often enough in stories.
Could the Spencer Kingdom possess one as well? I was curious. Perhaps I would ask Sister-in-law Daniela later.
“That’s right. But according to what Er told me, the Holy Sword seemed incomplete—or perhaps it had already been broken…”
“Princess Sophia, it may be best to say no more.”
“Er…”
This subject was evidently meant to remain secret. Sir Erwin’s expression hardened slightly. There might have been suspicions that their kingdom’s Holy Sword was a fake. That would certainly be a serious problem. It was not something that could be discussed lightly, either with outsiders or within the kingdom, because it could undermine the royal family’s authority.
“And where is the Holy Sword now?”
“It broke during the battle with the Bone Dragon, so it is being stored in the royal castle.”
“If only I had been able to wield it properly, none of this would have happened…”
Silence descended upon the room. I did not know how to encourage him. The conversation eventually shifted to lighter subjects and came to an end. Sir Erwin still did not seem fully recovered, so I advised him to rest for a while.
“The Holy Sword, huh…”
“Brother Alex, does the Spencer Kingdom possess a Holy Sword as well?”
Brother Alex’s gaze moved from me to Sister-in-law Daniela, and I looked at her too. She wore a slightly troubled expression and took a sip of tea.
“It does, but we do not know whether it is genuine.”
“Has no one ever used it?”
“Someone apparently did long ago, but it proved no different from an ordinary sword. That is why no one speaks of it any longer. I believe even its existence is kept secret. If it were revealed to be a fake, the royal family’s reputation would suffer.”
Being royalty was difficult. It seemed the royal family of the Kingdom of Raven might also be facing hard times. I hoped their Holy Sword was genuine.
Several days passed after Sir Erwin recovered, and his body showed no signs of abnormality.
From the relief supplies we had brought, I gave Princess Sophia several mid-grade healing potions as a small gift between friends. Afterwards, it was time to return to the Heine Margraviate. As we prepared to leave, Princess Sophia came to see us.
“Princess Daniela, Alex, Julius—His Majesty insists on thanking you in person. We will arrange all travel and accommodation, so would you kindly come to the royal capital?”
Sister-in-law Daniela looked troubled by Princess Sophia’s request.
We had come not as official representatives of the state, but as private individuals offering personal support. The mid-grade healing potions were merely gifts, without any political intent.
Although Sir Erwin had not gone into detail, many people must have been injured in the recent battle with the Bone Dragon.
Sir Erwin had received special treatment only because of the friendship between Sister-in-law Daniela and Princess Sophia.
If others learned of it, complaints would undoubtedly erupt. Going to the royal capital would certainly turn the matter into a political problem. We could not allow the situation to escalate any further.
