The rain in Sector 7 of Plata-Central did not fall in gentle streams; it sheeted off the cold, reinforced concrete overhangs of the subterranean district in heavy, rhythmic sheets that smelled faintly of ozone and wet cobblestone.

Forty feet below street level, deep within the soundproofed sub-levels of The After-Rift Lounge, the heavy oak doors groaned on their brass hinges as the midnight storm raged outside.

Cassian Drake stood behind the mahogany bar counter, holding a crystal martini glass up to the ambient blue glow of the neon lounge sign. He wore his dark bartender vest over a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled neatly to his elbows, his long white hair tied back in a low ribbon that draped smoothly over his shoulder. In his left hand, he held a silver polishing cloth, carefully wiping down the glass with slow, deliberate, aristocratic circles.Full novel: Guavajestic — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

CASSIAN: (Sighing softly, his voice echoing over the quiet hum of the bar's refrigeration coils) "Look at the stem alignment on this glass, Zach. Cheap. Mass-produced in a factory in Rosario-Sovereign. No hand-blown curve. No artistic integrity. In the Deoliux Realm, a glass like this would be used exclusively for feeding low-tier swamp-creatures in the outer stables."

Beside him, slouching on a tall leather barstool with a half-eaten beef empanada in one hand and a smartphone in the other, was Zach Drake.

Zach wore an oversized, black heavy-cotton hoodie, dark cargo trousers, and a pair of pristine, limited-edition neon-green sneakers that rested on the brass footrail of the bar. His spiky foliage-green hair stuck out in wild, unkempt tufts from beneath his hood, and his glowing crimson eyes reflected the flickering numbers on his phone screen.

ZACH: (Without looking up from his screen, taking a large bite of his empanada) "Bro, you're earning twelve dollars an hour plus tips. You don't get to complain about glass quality. Besides, look at the local hero forums right now—your 'Gigant' search tag is up four hundred percent because someone posted a clip of you melting that Class-4 Wreckage beast's legs yesterday."

CASSIAN: (His hand tightening around the silver polishing cloth, his pitch-black eyes narrowing into cold slits) "Do not speak that abhorrent monicker in my presence, Zach. 'Gigant.' A name coined by uncouth B-Rank frat boys who think martial prowess is measured in raw brawn and club-swinging stupidity. I am a prince of the royal house of Deoliux! I compose six-line sonnets in three dead languages! I cultivate rare carnivorous orchids!"

ZACH: (Laughing hysterically, nearly choking on his empanada) "Bro! You have forty-two child support claims filed against your name across Plata-Central! The local tabloid networks don't care about your poetry! They care that you're SS-Rank #2 and currently operating under a negative liquid balance of six thousand dollars!"

CASSIAN: (Placing a hand dramatically over his heart, his white silk cravat twitching with theatrical despair) "I am a victim of an unknown, subconscious abyssal reproductive anomaly! My mind was compromised during our atmospheric transition from Deoliux to Earth! I am a chaste, refined gentleman trapped in a nightmare of biological conspiracy!"

ZACH: "You literally gave me a twenty-minute lecture last month on which vintage Platarian wine pairs best with seafood pasta on a second date, Cassian. You remembered every single one of their names."

CASSIAN: (His face flushing with cold, aristocratic panic as he glances nervously toward the back office door) "Silence! Do you want Gus Miller to hear you?! Do you want Lady Death to add a forty-third lien to my shift pay?!"

Before Zach could answer, the heavy oak doors at the top of the concrete entrance stairs clicked open.

The cool, wet night air of Sector 7 rushed into the basement, bringing with it the distant sound of city sirens and the heavy, measured footsteps of two people descending the stairs.

Stepping into the dim light of The After-Rift Lounge was Trevor Grant.

At twenty-five years old and standing at a commanding 188 centimeters, the media mogul cut an imposing figure. He wore a sharp, tailored charcoal overcoat over a dark turtleneck, his dark hair immaculately styled, his dark eyes sweeping across the basement bar with cool, untouchable composure.

Walking beside him, her pristine white lab coat draped neatly over her arm, was Dr. Yelena Hover. Her brilliant eyes flickered with sharp, academic intelligence behind her wire-rimmed glasses as she held a sleek, military-grade digital tablet under her arm.

CASSIAN: (His stiff, defensive bartender mask instantly softening as he sets down his polishing cloth) "Ah... Trevor! Yelena! Welcome to the subterranean depths. To what do I owe the honor of a midnight visit from Plata-Central's premier power couple?"

TREVOR: (Walking slowly up to the bar counter, unbuttoning his charcoal coat and resting his long fingers against the mahogany wood) "A progress check, Cassian. And a warning."

ZACH: (Sitting up on his barstool, his crimson eyes narrowing slightly under his hoodie) "A warning? From who? Did Loungs try to send another marriage contract for Ashley?"

DR. YELENA HOVER: (Setting her digital tablet onto the bar counter, tapping the touchscreen to project a encrypted, holographic data file into the air) "Not Loungs. The threat originates from across the ocean, in the city of Oakhaven in the realm of Albion."

Cassian’s hand froze near the gin bottle.

CASSIAN: "Oakhaven... Lady Death's primary operational hub for the Pantyne Syndicate."

YELENA: "Precisely. Twenty minutes ago, my laboratory's orbital monitoring network intercepted a high-priority, encrypted transmission sent directly from Oakhaven to the Hero Association's central audit board in Plata-Central."

YELENA: (Expanding the holographic file, revealing a glowing red document stamped with an official legal seal) "Lady Death has formally submitted a petition for an Emergency Liquidation Order targeting your hero assets. She is claiming that your current negative balance of six thousand dollars—combined with your forty-two pending garnishment claims—constitutes a state of 'active financial insolvency' under Platarian civil law."

ZACH: (Whistling softly) "Financial insolvency? What does that mean in plain language, Yelena?"

TREVOR: (His deep, velvet-smooth voice carrying a cold, dangerous edge) "It means she wants the legal right to seize your hero license, Cassian. If the court grants her petition at the upcoming Eisenstadt Gala in three weeks, you will be stripped of your SS-Rank standing, your salary tier will be permanently frozen, and every single piece of monster equipment you harvest will be automatically transferred to Pantyne's salvage fleet."

CASSIAN: (Clutching his chest in pure, unadulterated horror, his long white hair floating slightly as a faint bubble of hyper-acidic water gurgled in his throat) "Strip my SS-Rank standing?! Freeze my salary tier?! She wants to lock me into a twelve-dollar-an-hour night shift at The After-Rift Lounge... for eternity?!"

ZACH: (Patting Cassian on the shoulder with a wicked, teasing smirk) "Look on the bright side, bro! At least you won't have to worry about buying double-breasted burgundy suits anymore. You can just wear the bar apron forever!"

CASSIAN: (Snapping his head toward Zach, his pitch-black eyes flaring) "I would rather tear open the Deoliux core with my bare hands and unleash a Class-1 rift upon the southern continent than wear a grease-stained apron for eternity, Zach!"

TREVOR: (Reaching into his inner coat pocket, pulling out a sleek, obsidian fountain pen, tapping it lightly against the mahogany bar counter) "Calm yourself, Cassian. Panic is merely emotional noise. Lady Death has constructed a classic corporate trap, but every trap contains a structural flaw."

CASSIAN: (Looking at Trevor with breathless, desperate hope) "A structural flaw? Name it, Trevor! I beg of you!"

TREVOR: "Lady Death's petition relies entirely on one assumption: that you enter the Eisenstadt Gala as an isolated, financially broken hero with zero corporate backing. She expects you to show up defensive, desperate, and surrounded by her neon-pink-vested garnishment officers."

DR. YELENA HOVER: (Tapping her tablet screen) "Which brings us to our counter-venture. Yesterday afternoon, Trevor and I officially registered a joint corporate enterprise in Plata-Central: Valoria-Plata Apex Media."

ZACH: "Apex Media? What does a publishing firm and a bio-containment lab have to do with Cassian's child support debt?"

TREVOR: (A slow, dangerous smirk spreading across his face, his dark eyes glinting under the neon bar lights) "Everything, Zach. Under Platarian corporate law, a nation-tier hero can sign an exclusive Brand Licensing & Media Management Agreement with a certified media firm. Once the agreement is signed, all incoming debt garnishments are automatically redirected through the firm's corporate liquidity buffer."

CASSIAN: "Meaning..."

TREVOR: "Meaning Lady Death cannot seize your assets directly. To touch a single dollar of your income, she must file a corporate lawsuit against Valoria-Plata Apex Media—a firm backed by Yelena's advanced bio-tech patents and my international publishing royalties."

CASSIAN: (Rising to his feet behind the bar, his eyes sparkling with pure, aristocratic awe) "Trevor... you are an absolute, unholy genius! You are putting a multi-billion-dollar corporate shield between me and Lady Death's auditors!"

TREVOR: "Not just a shield, Cassian. A sword. Chapter 14 of my book—The Art of Converting Burden into Royal Capital. Tomorrow morning, we begin stage one of our counter-strategy."

ZACH: "What's stage one?"

TREVOR: "We visit Nadia Chen’s High-Fashion Atelier in Sector 1. We are going to custom-tailor forty-two double-breasted obsidian silk tuxedo gowns and tailcoats for every single garnishment officer on Lady Death's roster."

ZACH: (Dropping his empanada onto his plate in sheer, unadulterated shock) "You're... you're buying custom high-fashion tuxedos... for the garnishment officers?!"

CASSIAN: (A magnificent, dark, villainous smile spreading across his pale face as he picks up his wine glass to toast) "Ah... glorious! We are turning a court garnishment team into a gothic fashion vanguard! Lady Death will weep tears of blood when we step onto the red carpet in Eisenstadt!"

TREVOR: (Raising his own glass of espresso with a calm, amused incline of his head) "Welcome to Apex Media, Cassian. Let us show the world how a prince manages his debts."
