Chapter 10 – A Job with Dragons.

HP – Jon Arctic as Severus Snape!

[Chapter Size: 2600 Words.]

Third Person POV

Scotland.

...

...

"This is where your room will be." She showed the place as soon as they entered.

It was basic, but certainly much better than that room inside the pub. The space was much larger than that small cubicle. There was a wardrobe, a chest of drawers, and a bed next to a small desk with a chair.

"Do you all live here?" Severus asked, turning back to her.

She nodded. "Yes. We have two more employees who are out—they went to buy some supplies at a beast market in Wales."

"That's why I called the Aurors today, since I was alone and had no way to deal with Belarus by myself. By the way, you knew the dragon's name without anyone introducing it to you first... I didn't say anything in front of the Aurors, but you know how strange that is, right?" she explained, but soon narrowed her eyes at Severus as if trying to uncover his secrets.

"Intuition." Severus gave an amused smile.

"Intuition, sure..." she murmured, finding the boy in front of her increasingly interesting.

Anyway, she continued explaining about the place. There were several rooms, and the house was much larger on the inside than it appeared on the outside. From the outside, it looked like a house with a few rooms, but inside it seemed almost like a mansion, with an entrance hall and a staircase leading to the second floor. Obviously, the place was using a space-expansion charm—and a very powerful one.

"Alright. I like the place," he said, satisfied.

She nodded as she watched him putting down his bags. "I'm going to prepare something for dinner tonight. You can finish putting your things away, and then we'll talk more about your job and your duties here," she said.

When she left him alone, he took out his books, his plants, seeds, and began organizing everything. The place had plenty of space, so Severus could make good use of it.

After organizing his things, he went to the kitchen, where he found her taking pieces of frozen meat out of some kind of freezer.

"I didn't even know there was electricity here," Severus commented as he entered the place and looked at what seemed to be Muggle appliances.

She looked at him and shook her head. "It's a runic freezing charm. It's used to preserve food," she said, while grabbing a large cleaver and starting to cut the meat she had taken out. There was a Muggle freezer there.

"I see," Severus murmured, while observing the place more closely.

"Well, while I finish here, let's talk about the job. Sit at the table," she asked.

Severus did so. The moment he sat down, several papers were placed in front of him.

"This is the manual of what we do here at the dragon protection reserve, the only one in Scotland. We take care of dragons and keep them out of the Muggle world. We take care of injuries, their containment within the reserve, the eggs, hatchlings… everything so that they can live well and also not harm the world outside the magical one," she began to explain, even while still looking at the meat.

"So, basically, we work as Ministry employees?" Severus asked.

She paused to think and nodded. "We are funded by the Ministry, yes… but it's more like… how can I put it… those Muggle things…"

"You must be referring to NGOs," Severus said. "Non-governmental organizations."

"That's right. We also receive money from donations. Some people are interested in dragons and want to preserve them. Some wizarding families even give us old dragons from their farms around the world," she explained.

"How many dragons are we talking about in the reserve?" he asked.

She couldn't help but smile. "Eighty-six dragons."

"That's quite a large number," he said, surprised.

"As I said, most of the families that have farms and breed dragons and their resources give us the older ones. Most of them are no longer active. We have at least around twenty-six active dragons; the rest are dragons of that kind, made up of inactive ones that are donated to us so they can live out their final days resting. And we take care of them personally."

"Hmm…" Severus raised an eyebrow at that, going back to reading.

"It seems we're not that well funded by the Ministry, are we? Since we have to hand over the parts of dead dragons," Severus commented, with a slight mocking tone.

"Y-yes… that's how things work, Mr. Snape. We take care of the dragons while they are alive. As for the remains… well, we can't do anything. We have to give the materials of the dead dragons to the families who raised them, if the dragons were fully donated to us. At least, they don't slaughter the animal when it becomes old and useless—they give it some time to stay here…" she explained.

Severus had to agree with that. At least, the place worked as a kind of refuge for dragons that had served their whole lives.

"I see. It seems interesting."

"You'll earn about 10 Galleons per week to work as my assistant," she said.

Severus raised an eyebrow. That was certainly a fortune—much more than working at the pub. After all, a Galleon was worth about 5 pounds. He would earn much less in the Muggle world, around 2 Galleons if he converted his 10 euros per week, or almost that, since there was the conversion fee at Gringotts.

At least, this job paid five times more, but the danger was also much greater than serving drinks.

"Great. I accept," he said, excited.

"And you'll also get a bonus if you're really as useful as you proved today. I'll double your pay myself."

Severus nodded. So it could be 20 Galleons per week… eighty per month. He would have money to buy many things. It was quite fair, considering that an Auror or a professor earned something above 400 Galleons per month.

"Very well, then," she said, placing the meat on the table. "I'll wait for this to thaw over the next few hours. Let's enjoy a bit of the sun still in the sky. I want to show you the reserve. You'll have to leave later, right?"

"Yes. I'll be there at 8 p.m."

"Alright. We have time, then. I promise I won't keep you past 6 p.m.," she said.

Severus nodded, still holding the manual in his hands.

"By the way, what time do you intend to get here today?"

"Around two or three in the morning, depends on how long the bar takes."

"You work at a pub?" She stared at him.

"A rock pub, that's what I managed to get..." he replied calmly.

"Rock? I think that's a Muggle music style, right?"

"Yes..."

She just looked at him and said nothing more. She took her wand and tapped Severus. Immediately, the two disappeared, first appearing in the area where Belarus had been before.

"As you already know, this is where we live. And the dragons know that too. They automatically come to us when they have some problem, like what happened today," she explained, pointing to the house.

Her gaze went to the broken tooth... "I still wonder how you knew about her tooth, the same could be said about the name..." she looked at him suspiciously again, trying to find some logic behind what had happened...

"I have an affinity with animals. I was born with it," Severus replied. Which wasn't wrong—he just hadn't awakened it until two days ago.

She merely rolled her eyes, clearly showing there was more to it, but she didn't insist. With a tap on Severus's shoulder, they disappeared once again.

In the next moment, they were on top of a mountain, and she followed the path while Severus came right behind.

They entered a mountainous area with a large valley, and Severus was finally able to see everything when she stopped. He approached and stood beside her.

There, he found a valley filled with dragons, with the sun close to disappearing on the horizon.

Several of the creatures were flying around the place. There were caves, rivers, mountains, and a dense forest. The dragons were everywhere.

"This is the main dragon area. They live like a community. There are dragons from all over the world here," she explained.

Severus could see at least four or five different species there: Common Welsh Green, Hebridean Black, Swedish Short-Snout, Hungarian Horntail, and there was a Chinese Fireball.

He wondered what would happen if he expanded his mind like he did with the dragoness Belarus… Would it work with all of them?

These dragons were not as large as the Valyrian dragons from the other world, but they were still impressive. The species seemed well classified—better than what he himself had done before. He had already studied dragons in his other life, something not even ordinary Valyrians had done in such detail.

"I've heard that there is a very rare dragon in this world called the Opaleye," Severus commented, recalling his memories.

She smiled when she heard that. "That's the first thing you say when you see this place full of dragons?" she murmured.

None of the dragons seemed to have noticed their presence. Many were busy taking care of themselves or preparing for the night.

She began speaking again. "But about the Opaleye… I've always wanted to see one. I've never seen one, but they say they exist. They are extremely rare. It's my dream to see one someday," Mianna said, in a dreamy tone.

Severus kept those words in mind and turned his attention back to the dragons, studying their behavior.

Some growled at each other, about to start fights over territory. Others burned their nests to keep warm. Some broke trees, others drank water from the river. Some entered the caves, while others flew through the sky.

The place was, without a doubt, rich in draconic activity.

"Well, I won't explain much today. It's better to show you in practice tomorrow. But I'd like you to read the manual completely. This is where we take care of them. There are other nests outside of here, as you can imagine—not all dragons stay in this area—but most are concentrated here."

"And what about pairs and eggs?" Severus asked, curious.

She gave a smile full of tenderness. "We also take care of hatchlings. We have two of them inside the sanctuary. Your role will also be to help take care of their well-being, so they can grow up healthy," she said.

"I see." Severus took one last look at the place, and then the two of them apparated again, returning to the cabin.

"Lady Mianna!" A voice called out as soon as they entered.

Near the entrance, there were two men with bags and suitcases—some of them even dimensional, as Severus could tell.

They looked at him with curiosity, but soon turned their attention back to her.

"What happened here? Why does the ground look a bit more…"

"A long story, but it was resolved thanks to this boy by my side," she said, pointing at Severus.

The two men looked at him, curious, studying him.

"Who is he?" one of them asked.

"Boys, meet Severus Snape. He will be the new assistant starting tomorrow," she said with a smile.

The men couldn't help but frown. "Wait… but he doesn't look even 17."

"Well, that's true, but we didn't put that in our contract, did we? And the boy proved his worth. If he keeps doing what he did today, he could help us a lot this summer. Besides, he will return to Hogwarts, so he'll only stay with us for a few weeks—I decided to take him in," she explained.

"Now introduce yourselves to the boy," Mianna added.

The two approached. They were young men, with a friendly air.

"Hello. Well, if Lady Mianna says you're trustworthy, then we can trust that too. After all, her instincts have saved us many times. Don't even get me started on that friend of ours who almost got devoured by a dragon… if it weren't for her," one of them said, laughing lightly. "Nice to meet you, I'm Cedric Vane."

"You talk as if you weren't burned too," the other replied, rolling his eyes. "Anyway, I'm Alastair Crowe. Nice to meet you."

Severus simply nodded. "Severus. Severus Snape." He repeated the name, even though Mianna had already said it.

"Well, welcome, Severus Snape."

"Thank you. I hope it will be a pleasure working with you," he replied.

"Of course. Let's see how you do starting tomorrow."

"That's right, I want you to train him starting tomorrow. It doesn't need to be anything heavy, just show him the basics. He'll be my assistant," Lady Mianna said.

They nodded. "Well, anyway, let's prepare some food. I know Severus will be going to his Muggle job soon," she commented.

The two raised their eyebrows. "Wait, what? He has a job in the Muggle world?"

Severus went in with them as he explained. "Seriously? You're a bartender? Why would you do that?" Alastair laughed.

"Wait… they only pay two Galleons a week?" Cedric seemed shocked.

Severus shrugged, explaining that he wanted to gain experience with Muggles. They found it strange, but didn't insist.

One of them helped Lady Mianna prepare dinner, while Severus went back to the room to organize his things.

He mainly organized his seeds, since he intended to find a place to plant them in the coming days, in the reserve.

Compared to what he could earn with those plants, his jobs were insignificant. Even earning 80 Galleons per month, he could make that in a single day if he took rare plants to sell in Diagon Alley.

He took the opportunity to read a bit more of his books and then went to dinner.

He ate with the group, talking with them and getting to know them better. One was pure-blood, the other was Muggle-born, who had always been fascinated by dragons. Both were there for that reason.

Soon, the question came about why he worked and lived outside.

Severus told a bit of his story. They were surprised when he revealed that his Muggle father used to drink and beat him—something he didn't bother hiding, and which was the reason he had left. He needed to gather money, both to study and to support himself.

"Man… Lady Mianna, it's a good thing you hired him. We'll take very good care of you, little buddy," Alastair said, even seeming emotional.

Severus made a face, while the other began to laugh. Lady Mianna simply shook her head, but looked at Severus with some pity.

"I'm sorry. Not all of us choose the parents we have… but here you will be treated well, Mr. Snape."

He nodded. "I appreciate everything. I will do my best."

With those words, they finished dinner, still talking in a friendly manner.

Severus went back to the room, put on some simple Muggle clothes he had, and with his wand in hand, left the house and apparated away.

"Huh, you're here," said Mr. Wick, nodding when he saw Severus entering the pub, also getting ready.

Now, he had two jobs in different worlds.

He would try to learn as much as possible from both.

And so, it went on for an entire week.
