[Chapter Size: 2600 Words.]
Third Person POV
Scotland.
...
...
Severus was satisfied that morning after breakfast in that house in Scotland, with the 20 galleons. Lady Mianna had just handed him a pouch with that amount after a week.
She had kept her promise to double the payment, since he had met her expectations. Severus did everything excellently, learning quickly and demonstrating unusual skills in calming dragons.
During the activities, he managed to do things that none of the other three who worked there had been able to accomplish. They were very impressed, even stunned, by the way Severus handled certain problems throughout the week, making it seem as if he knew exactly what the dragons needed whenever a crisis arose in the reserve.
Severus discovered that the pain of ____, was just one problem among many that encompassed their entire routine, as dragons always presented some kind of issue every day. Sometimes they got stuck on cliffs, rocks, or trees, sometimes they fought among themselves, and it was their job to separate them. The fights could occur for various reasons, such as food, eggs, nests, territory, or mating, when males competed with each other for a female.
Severus could identify exactly what the dragons' problem was, and even Lady Mianna was delighted by it, as the work became much simpler. Instead of trying to figure out blindly what the problem was when it happened, Severus identified it at the very first moment — after all, no one could speak the language of dragons — now there was someone who understood.
And so the first week passed. Severus sat at his desk and released the coins, letting them fall right in front of him before stacking them.
20 galleons.
It was much more than he had in his entire savings from the previous year, and he had managed to earn it in just one week.
In addition, he also took out some euro notes. He had received from Mr. Wick, the night before, 10 EUR for the work at the bar. Perhaps he hadn't stood out as much as he had with the dragons, but the bar owner certainly liked Severus's work. At least, he didn't do anything wrong. There were some problems, of course, but the security guards always handled them.
20 galleons and 10 EUR.
It was the first time he had earned money working, and that wasn't bad at all. He could even live comfortably like this, since he lived at the reserve, didn't spend on rent or food, as he had lunch and dinner with the staff. If he wanted to eat something late at night, he could also manage, as they always allowed him and the others at the bar.
Now, what could he do with that money?
Today he was free, as he got one day off per week. He had covered Cedric's shift yesterday, since she wanted to visit her grandmother in Belgium. Today, Cedric would work for Severus, while he planned what to do at that moment.
Deciding to finish what he hadn't managed to do in Diagon Alley, he chose to go back there. There would already be students buying supplies for the next school year, even though July had not yet arrived.
Leaving his room with an empty backpack, he found Lady Mianna, still wearing a dressing gown, holding a cup of coffee, as they watched Alastair and Cedric leaving at that moment to begin their work at the reserve. They always left earlier than Lady Mianna.
"Well, it seems you're heading out as well," she asked calmly, and Severus nodded.
"I have a few things to take care of today." Severus said.
"I see... in any case, good luck, whatever you're going to do today. Just be here tomorrow." she said. Severus thanked her and left.
She couldn't help but sigh, watching his back before seeing him disappear as soon as he stepped outside using apparition.
"That boy... He always seems open, but at the same time, he seems to hide many things," she said, without dwelling too much on the matter.
Then, she went back to sipping her tea and preparing for the day.
Severus had not necessarily left the reserve. He appeared at a point about 5 km from the house, in the middle of the forest. There were no dragons nearby. All he found was an area he had turned into a small garden, where various plants and flowers were well cared for.
Severus had set up that small space to cultivate some plants, with the intention of reselling them in Diagon Alley. They were very well nourished, and Severus, who had not accelerated their growth artificially in an immediate way, wanted to study them properly.
He wanted to understand how they grew, what properties changed, what they acquired over time, how they were composed, and what kind of liquid, seed, thickness, or other materials they could provide — and what effects they produced.
Severus was fascinated by it. Just like Jon Arctic, he had studied practically all the plants of the world across planets in his other life, even going as far as altering the genetics of some since his early years. Even so, he always studied the original plant first, trying to understand it completely, since any genetic alteration would turn it into something new, even if it were just an improved version.
He had a certain respect for all those plant lives.
In that last week, even though there were plants there that would normally take months to grow — and others that shouldn't even sprout in that season or region — all of them had flourished in just seven days, as he deposited his energy into them daily.
"Well, let's start removing them," Severus decided.
He began cutting them, also making use of the seeds. From each plant, he could extract enough to generate three or four new ones. Some he kept, while others had to be destroyed so that he could replant them. The rest, he placed in his backpack inside preservation jars, which he had obtained at the pub.
'With this, I should have enough money to buy a dimensional bag... But that might be an unnecessary expense. Maybe I should buy a book and learn these expansion spells myself. Although it's illegal, after all, any use of expansion spells must be registered with the ministry...' he thought.
Severus finished everything and used apparition again, returning to central London, appearing in an alley.
Upon arriving at the entrance to Diagon Alley, he first greeted Tom, from the Leaky Cauldron.
"Hello, Tom," he said as he entered the bar.
The man looked at the boy. "You're back here? It's been a week. You certainly got the job you wanted, right?" Tom asked in a friendly tone.
Some people at the counter, who were drinking and talking during the day, couldn't help but look at the interaction, curious, trying to recognize the young man who smiled amicably.
"You can bet I did. I'm working at a Muggle pub during the nights..." he said, while the man let out a laugh.
"Oh yeah? Don't tell me you're the bartender," Tom said.
"Precisely. You are correct. I would say I'm an even better bartender than you, Tom," Severus laughed, while the man joined in the laughter.
"Well, maybe I'll contradict you…" he joked. "And did you give up on the idea of going to that dragon reserve looking for a job as well?" he asked, still remembering the persistence Severus had shown. He had even offered him a job himself to prevent the boy from that madness.
"Of course not," Severus said, taking out a pouch and starting to shake it, with several galleons clinking against each other. "I've already been working there for a week, and I must say… it's fantastic."
Tom, who had been laughing, suddenly looked stunned. "They hired you?"
The man couldn't believe it. What kind of reserve would hire a child to deal with dragons?
"You could say I'm very good at what I do there. The staff likes me, and they're the ones who handle the real problems. I'm kind of an assistant, earning a salary… something like a Muggle intern," he replied.
But that was a lie. Given the level of danger Severus put himself in every day, dealing directly with dragons, it left Lady Mianna stunned.
In the first few days, she had even threatened to send him away because of the danger he faced by getting so close to the dragons. However, as she saw that he solved problems even she couldn't, she eventually gave in.
In the last few days, Severus had been showing himself to be extremely efficient. Somehow, he managed to deal with the beasts without them wanting to attack him. She had only seen similar talent in another person, someone who could also make the dragons listen to them — and who was always called whenever truly serious problems arose in the reserve.
Severus didn't know this. And if he knew about that thought and that person, he would probably say that he had far more affinity with dragons than that other person ever would.
In any case, he stored the coins in the hoodie he was wearing — a normal hoodie, not transfigured. Severus had bought some clothes with his savings at the end of an afternoon, refreshing his Muggle wardrobe a bit.
"Anyway, I'm heading out, Tom."
"Good luck out there, kid. But I'll say, you're crazy," the man couldn't help but mutter.
Severus simply nodded and laughed, stepping out the door and heading toward Diagon Alley.
"Who's the brat?" one of the seated men asked, curious.
"A Slytherin student," Tom said, letting out a small smile.
Severus entered Diagon Alley in the middle of the day. There was much more movement than the last time, but even so, his money was limited. 20 galleons didn't allow him to do much.
The first thing he needed to do was try to gather more money.
He headed to one of the apothecaries. He needed to sell his plants, and his backpack was full of them, stored in preservation jars he had gotten from the trash of the pub where he worked.
The same thing he did was return to the shop of the old man who had sold the seeds to Severus. He found the same young man, Michael Prewett, working and checking the plants, and as he approached, the boy seemed a bit cautious upon realizing he was a Slytherin, just like the previous week.
"Hello," Severus still gave a friendly smile.
The young man remained alert, and Severus looked a bit surprised that he was still so cautious just because Severus belonged to a house. Severus even remembered that Michael Prewett was a student who had studied in older classes in previous years along with his sister, Molly — he should be around his early twenties. Severus remembered him from Gryffindor, one of the seventh-year students when he himself was still in his first or second year.
"How can I help you, Mr. Snape?" Michael asked with some caution.
"I'd like to know if you buy these plants," Severus said, taking some jars out of his bag and showing them.
The young man observed them, widening his eyes, looking at Severus with some suspicion. After all, he had sold those same seeds to him just a week ago — and that plant didn't grow in three months.
Not knowing what to do immediately, he opened one of the jars, analyzed the color, and then smelled it. He couldn't hide his surprise at the quality. Even so, the thought that Severus had done something to accelerate the growth remained. And normally, those who did that were scammers, compromising the quality with questionable processes.
"I'll have to take this to my superior. He's in the back, taking care of the greenhouses. I need to confirm the quality… but I can't guarantee anything. Our shop usually buys from renowned suppliers and people registered with the Ministry. Nothing personal, but that's how we operate," he explained.
Severus nodded, having no problem with it.
"That's perfectly normal. But anyway, go ahead and check. If you buy them, I appreciate it. If not, I'll still be grateful for feedback on the quality of my plant."
If it didn't work out there, he would go to the next shop. There were other apothecaries, as well as potion masters who might buy his ingredients, even if for less.
With that, the young man went through a door at the back, while Severus waited there.
In the back, Michael Prewett approached the man who took care of the greenhouses, Andel, a true plant enthusiast. He loved cultivating them and keeping them healthy. Andel was the young employee's boss, as well as his mentor.
"What is this?" Andel asked, looking at the open jar with a plant inside and a bit of soil.
"Look, I sold a seed to a boy a week ago. Now he showed up with a fully grown plant from those seeds. The quality seems good, but I feel like he must have done something… He studies in Slytherin, and you know how to judge quality, right? Besides, you shouldn't trust those snakes too much…" The boy, whose family had their heads deep in the war, said, while the man raised an eyebrow before checking the plant. He smelled it, examined it more closely, and ended up surprised.
"This isn't just good quality… it's excellent. Wow… whoever cultivated this really knows what they're doing!" the man murmured with great enthusiasm.
The boy looked at him, still surprised. "But this was grown in just one week, if I'm right, master," he said.
The man looked at the jar again, placed it on the table, and raised his wand, beginning to cast several verification spells.
"Strange… I can't measure when the plant was cultivated," he said.
He performed other analysis spells. All of them confirmed the plant's exceptional quality, but when he tried to verify its lifespan, he couldn't. It was as if that information was hidden.
"I find it suspicious, boss," the boy said.
The man nodded slowly.
"It really is very strange… I've never come across something like this. Do you believe the boy has bad intentions?" he asked cautiously.
The assistant seemed to think for a moment. The boy had been friendly and showed knowledge about plants, but the name Snape was familiar to him. He had asked a Ravenclaw cousin who was at Hogwarts if she knew him, and she said the boy was troublesome and was always fighting with Gryffindor students. That already influenced his opinion.
"I think he's hiding something. We shouldn't buy it," he said.
The man sighed upon hearing Michael.
"Alright. It's decided. We won't accept the sale."
With that, he took the jar and returned to Severus. He approached with a firm look.
"Sorry, we won't buy it." The boy didn't seem offended. He simply gave a small smile.
"Alright. Thank you anyway, sir. Maybe next time. But can you tell me the quality of the plant?"
"It's of excellent quality, my mentor doesn't usually give praise easily, so yours must be good, really good."
"I see, that's good. Thank you..." Severus turned and began to leave.
He still needed to present his plants to someone who might eventually be willing to buy them for the quality they had. That wasn't something common — it was high-level production. At some point, someone would see that beyond prejudice.
Besides, it also served as a good way for Severus to test the environment of the shops. To see if they were prejudiced against Muggles… or even against Slytherins.
With that, Severus left the place.
