Third Person POV
Dragon Reserve, Scotland.
...
...
"So, how was your day?" Severus joined the table for dinner at 7 PM, while everyone looked at him with a look of pure exhaustion.
"Are you kidding? Today was horrible, the worst day of the year we've had," Mianna replied immediately.
"Really?" He raised an eyebrow as he stared at each of them. His gaze settled on Cedric, who looked back at him with near indignation.
"Look, Severus… you… can you tell me what you've really been doing with these dragons? I've worked here my entire career and I can tell very well when dragons are upset or disturbed," Lady Mianna said with a certain indignation. It didn't seem too serious, but there was still that tired tone. "All it takes is for you to miss one day and the dragons are already all agitated."
"But all I did was just treat them..." Severus said, a bit surprised.
"You handle them better than any of us. While we've been working here for years, you arrived here a week ago and the dragons already get restless if you don't show up in front of them every day. I hope it won't be like this every week… and please, go take care of them tomorrow," Mianna said.
All Severus did today was take care of Belarus, perhaps being the only dragon who knew where to find him. She went to their house. So Mianna, Alastair, and Cedric were quite exhausted; they had to try to calm dragons all day long, all of them restless, roaring, even refusing to let her get close, while their eyes searched, taking flight in search of someone.
The older dragons were easier to manage, but the younger dragons were another story.
"Well, I can see what I can do about that… but you do know I'll have to go back to Hogwarts, right? At the beginning of September," Severus said.
"That's what worries me now. You can do something about this, can't you?" Mianna asked, not really knowing what to do. She believed Severus could do something, since if he could attract the dragons so easily to him in a week, maybe he could communicate with them for longer.
Cedric and Alastair seemed to be listening closely to her request. Both were silent, watching Severus. He somehow managed to speak with the dragons or show that he understood them easily, especially his connection with Belarus. There was caution and even admiration in their gazes. They were also tired from having dealt with the more agitated dragons that day.
"Well… aside from the problems we had with dragon nests… We received the letter from Hogwarts. You got it, I assume?"
"Yes, it's my O.W.L.s," Severus confirmed.
"Any Outstanding in any subject?" Alastair asked, curious.
"Well, I passed in Potions, Charms, and Defense Against the Dark Arts with Outstanding," Snape said.
"Oh, that's really fantastic. I'm sure that if you take the seventh-year exams, you'll have a good magical career, perhaps at the Ministry?" Alastair said. Even Cedric and Mianna had a certain look of interest.
"Actually, I also hope to get Outstanding in Ancient Runes and Herbology, where I got Exceeds Expectations," Severus said.
"And the Care of Magical Creatures classes? Are you in those as well?" Cedric asked with interest. Certainly, someone with Severus's abilities, having such mastery over dragons, should excel in classes with magical animals.
Severus had to think for a moment. He had actually been taking that class until the third year because it allowed him to be with Lily; it was merely his choice. Later, he thought he wouldn't gain anything from the lessons and switched to Runes, which was an optional subject, just like Divination. He had left, but intended to return. Obviously, his interest in magical creatures was no longer a secret, as some of them had seen him reading Scamander's books.
"I intend to speak with the Head of Slytherin to see if I can arrange that with my schedule," Severus said.
"Oh, you mean Slughorn," Alastair said, laughing. "Well, if you got O's in your O.W.L.s, I'm sure you're one of his favorites. He's quite straightforward and welcoming with those he thinks have potential."
Severus gave Alastair a smile. "You're absolutely right about the professor," he laughed. After all, the professor was quite elitist and always paid attention only to selected students.
"...But I'm not one of those," Severus replied naturally. "I am the greatest talent to come out of Hogwarts in Potions in the last 200 years. Even so, I'm outside his club. He doesn't give me the attention you imagine."
Severus said this calmly. Lily was in the club, and he always got high marks alongside her, but all the praise went to the redhead. Severus used to be the kind of boy who wasn't very sociable. For Slughorn, it wasn't just talent that mattered—the way the student interacted with others also influenced things. Thus, he gave his praise and attention more to Lily and others who showed potential to become great names in the wizarding world.
Severus wasn't bothered by this, but he found it amusing how this new interaction would be.
"Really? You're that good at Potions? But Slughorn doesn't recognize it, why?" Alastair commented.
"Yes. About that, it's complicated..." Severus replied, but he didn't care much about Slughorn's opinion; he was thinking about something else.
Severus hadn't laid hands on a cauldron since his memories returned, but he imagined he could do even better now. He had as much talent as the former Severus Snape, as well as Jon Arctic. One was good at executing potions and even altering them; he himself had made modifications and improved many recipes. Jon Arctic, on the other hand, was an inventor—a revolutionary who created potions when they didn't even exist as a field of study in his world.
'Well, and I will certainly be even better here. A magical world, new plants, ingredients, and a vast body of knowledge accumulated over thousands of years in this field. I will devour it all when I have the opportunity.'
Severus wanted to learn everything he could. He could already imagine the possibilities and new ideas that would arise in his mind. A gleam appeared in his eyes with these thoughts.
Lady Mianna raised an eyebrow. "You really seem to like Potions."
Severus gave her a smile, a very natural one, but also excited. "I can't wait to touch a cauldron again. I'm even thinking about buying one, if I can find a place to brew potions," Severus said.
Lady Mianna raised an eyebrow, while Cedric and Alastair exchanged a glance.
"If you want a place, you can use the basement of the house. It's a potions laboratory. We usually need to make something when necessary. Cedric makes the potions, however, we usually receive ready-made potions from the Ministry," she said naturally. Since they dealt with magical creatures, especially dangerous ones, all kinds of potions were necessary.
Severus had already seen the stock they had inside the house, he just didn't know about the laboratory. There were potions for burns, for breathing or injuries, even for bites, in case someone lost a limb or something like that, to prevent dying from hemorrhage. Potions for dragons were even more potent.
He looked at her, surprised. "I can really use it?"
"Yes, but you'll have to bring your own ingredients," she said.
Severus nodded. "That will help me a lot. Thank you," he said.
She nodded and kept staring at him while eating. "And something has been bothering me… what happened to your hair?" She had only had time to talk about how exhausting the day was, so she hadn't brought it up before.
"That's true. The way he's fixing himself up, it looks like he's trying to win someone over," Alastair said, laughing.
Severus shook his head. "No, I just thought I needed to improve my hair. I didn't really like the old one," he said, preferring his appearance as Jon Arctic in his teenage years.
"Well, you look quite handsome," she said, admitting it, not as flirting, but naturally, speaking to a young man, even though he was 15 years old and younger than her.
That didn't stop the other two companions from laughing. "Hey, Lady Mianna, he's too young for you," one of them joked.
She shot them a furious look. "Shut up, you idiots! But I'm sure the girls at Hogwarts will love that hair," she finished.
They ate more in silence. Severus arranged with Lady Mianna about using the laboratory the next day and then got ready, preparing himself for the pub.
He apparated into an alley while it was already night, in the middle of London, and moved toward the pub.
"Ah, there you are… changed your hair?" said Mr. Wick, who was removing some things from the shop entrance when he saw Severus.
"You could say that," Severus replied with a nod of greeting.
"Well, it looks like you've already spent your salary on something. It turned out well," he admitted, although he found it very strange for Severus's hair to change from something long, straight, and greasy to something shorter and curly. Such a big change that, if it weren't for the eyes, he would have thought it was someone else.
"Who are you?" But it was different for the next person who saw him when he entered the place. It was one of the waitresses, who looked at him in surprise, even with the bartender uniform.
"You idiot. It's Severus. Don't you see he just changed his hair? The eyes are still the same," said Jennifer, approaching while laughing at Vanessa and looking at Severus with a peculiar gleam.
"You look different… handsome," she said slowly, with a mischievous smile.
"Hello Vanessa, hello Jennifer..." Severus greeted them. "I'll put my bag away in the back and be right back."
That was all he said.
"You want to take him to bed, don't you? You know he must be, what, 16 at most, that's illegal!?" Vanessa couldn't stop looking at Jennifer, who just laughed.
"Well, he refuses to come to my house after work every day. And I didn't even have that intention, Vanessa... But today he looks way too good..." Jennifer couldn't help but feel a warmth as she looked at Severus's back disappearing into the back.
If Severus heard that as he left, he didn't seem to react or say anything, he just moved on, putting his things away in the staff area.
"Hey, how are things?" Severus returned to the bar, speaking to Pedro.
"Severus… you're certainly different, but those eyes are unmistakable, huh?" Pedro laughed.
Severus nodded and looked toward the entrance, greeted the security guards, Lucas and Garden, then looked to the other side of the bar and raised an eyebrow.
He turned back to Pedro and pointed to the band's stage. There was no one there. "Where are they? Shouldn't they already be setting up the instruments?"
In a week, Severus had already made friends with everyone at the bar, even getting to know a bit about their lives. He had experiences that not even the former Severus Snape would be able to understand about how a Muggle lived. Before, he had quite a closed mind about these things, but with Jon Arctic's memories, he saw everything differently.
There was a huge contrast between the medieval life of his former world and modern life in this one. People were quite liberal—if he could define it that way. He had been seeing many things during these nights working at the bar, from promiscuity to drugs.
Drugs were not something exclusive to this world. Jon Arctic had traveled the entire world and knew the effects of drugs in different regions, but he had to admit these were far more potent. With the industrialization of substances, many things were intensified in the current world he was in.
He saw men hallucinating, smoking things that drove them to madness or sniffing dangerous substances. Mr. Wick forbade it, but from time to time he still caught someone doing it in secret inside the bar itself.
Well, it wasn't his responsibility to stop these people, but he still observed.
He also noticed that the bar's crowd was a specific type of group—a smaller portion of society that liked to be more rebellious. Most people lived with their families, in a more traditional way.
Those who frequented the bar were generally more liberal young people who didn't fit much into that more conservative concept. Many were at odds with their parents or even running away from home, trying to be rebellious and living however they could.
Severus wasn't there to judge, but to understand.
His coworker looked at him and, after hearing the question, replied: "They're outside. It seems the guitarist had a problem. They're trying to find another one."
"I see…" Severus immediately became interested. "I'll be back," he said, passing by the security guard.
He found the band group, which he was already familiar with. They played three times a week.
The group seemed quite agitated, talking among themselves, clearly worried.
"Hey, how are things?" Severus approached the group. He already knew everyone there—it was easy to make friends with his old memories, he knew how to deal with people.
"Oh, Snape," said the vocalist, looking at the newcomer.
"I heard you're having a problem. Jack had an accident… Is he okay? Did you find a guitarist?" Severus asked.
"You have no idea… Jack broke his arm, he's in the hospital. He only told us now, late in the afternoon. We're trying to contact some colleagues, but someone who could replace him already backed out. We're going to talk to others as well, no luck yet," he said.
"Then let me play," Severus suddenly said, making the whole group look at him.
"What?"
"I said: let me play."
"You play guitar?" the drummer looked at him, surprised.
"Well… I'm good with music and I've already more or less understood how the instrument works. The guitar… I can't say I know how to play, but I can manage. How about we set everything up and I try playing there? If you don't like it, you'll already have the equipment set up and will just have to wait for another guitarist. But I'm sure I can handle it, knowing your entire repertoire."
"You've never rehearsed with us, Severus," the bassist muttered.
"I know, Caio, but I'm good at listening. Trust me, I've always played musical instruments."
And how could he not? In a past life, he had inherited his father's great talent for music and learned to play with his lute. Later, he even created other instruments. He had never seen a guitar in his life—obviously, there were no electric instruments in Ártica—but he certainly knew the nature of music very well and had transformed the lute into something like a guitar from this world...
"Are you sure?" asked the vocalist, the band's leader, staring at him.
He certainly liked Severus. The boy was very young, but he knew how to interact well. In the last few days they had played there, Severus got to know them better, asked questions—even somewhat strange ones—about their lives, but he had always been nice.
"Come on… you have nothing to lose. Give me that guitar and let me show you what I can do," Severus said with a confident smile.
With no choice, they really gave him a chance.
Severus returned to the bar to connect the instruments, climbing onto the stage while the waitresses, the other bartender, the security guards, and the manager didn't understand what he was doing up there.
Until he started playing.
The sound of the guitar roared through the place, as he studied the instrument with his hands, feeling the details, beginning with the first melodies—mastering it with ease.
The people watching were quite surprised as he began to play.
He may have never rehearsed songs in the modern world, but his ears were extremely trained from his past life. Here, it would be no different.
He understood rhythms, chords, tones… memorizing everything and reproducing it easily on the guitar as if he were playing an acoustic one.
That night, he would not be just the bartender.
