Third Person POV

"Severus, are you there?"
Severus was working again in the laboratory in the basement of the cabin, in the middle of the next morning, when Lady Mianna entered and found him preparing potions without even touching the cauldrons. Quite the opposite — he was operating two cauldrons at the same time, keeping attention on rings in the middle of all that.
She looked at him in surprise as the cauldrons moved on their own and the ingredients themselves began to float, being cut, crushed, having liquids extracted or simply added into the mixture at the right moment.
Severus, who at the same time was paying attention to the cauldrons without looking at them, was carving what seemed to be runes into a small ring.
He raised his gaze to Mianna, without the cauldrons stopping producing the potions automatically.
"How are you doing that?" she asked, a bit shocked as she approached.
In fact, it was the first time she had seen him making potions. Mianna knew that he produced potions at a master level, but she had always thought that this was something very personal to interfere with in the laboratory. She only came now because she needed to talk to him due to someone's arrival, observed Severus, surprising her once again.
'What else does this boy know how to do?!'
He simply opened a smile when he saw her face. "Well, as you can see, it's not just a spell that I placed on the cauldrons."
"That much I can see… but will I really understand what that means?" Mianna murmured.
"This is telekinesis. You can see that it's quite useful. But you have to focus your mind for it..." he said, only not mentioning that his mind was practically divided into 3 functions without collapsing. Something he had to thank his past life for, about being able to divide his mind.
She kept staring. She had never seen anything like that, but honestly, she no longer knew if she could still be surprised by that boy who would only stay there for one more week.
She knew that if she asked more, she would probably regret it. The boy was a monster in magic. He could perform strange wandless magic, produce potions at that level, cultivate plants every week, talk to dragons… and still worked in the muggle world. In his free time, he was always reading books, studying by writing in them or staying there creating more potions!
It was impossible to understand what kind of person had appeared there looking for work more than a month ago, but she knew that Severus, beyond everything, was a good and friendly young man. He had never done anything that made her doubt his character, even if he hid many secrets.
She already imagined that she would miss him when he left. But anyway, she sighed.
"Alright… let's assume this is something complicated." She changed the subject immediately. "I called you because someone arrived and wants to meet you… and see the eggs of the Swedish Short-Snout dragon, hatching."
He nodded upon hearing that, understanding. "Just give me ten minutes. I can finish adding the last ingredients and leave the potion working on its own while it cools."
He had enough control, so she found it reasonable. Even if the person outside was important, they would certainly understand not interrupting a young potions master.
Severus failed once again with the rings, trying different combinations and using that world's expansion spell to assign runes — a challenging combination, but still possible.
He began to put things away and, after finishing adding the last ingredients, extinguished the fire, since he needed to reduce the temperature. Now he could keep the cauldron sealed and finish the potion later.
He stepped out, passing through the house, until he found Mianna standing next to a gray-haired man reading some papers, the same papers he had written about each dragon in the reserve.
Both looked at him as soon as they noticed him, while Severus moved forward, studying the man — until his eyes widened.
"I know who you are… Newt Scamander."
The man had a peculiar demeanor. His eyes vibrated with curiosity, analyzing Severus as he slightly turned his face, yet still kept an attentive gaze.
"And you are the boy Mianna has been talking about in her letters for about a month."
"Ah… I wasn't aware of that," Severus replied, looking at his employer.
He saw Mianna's owls coming and going from the cabin throughout the month, but he never had any intention of invading her privacy — he would not enter her mind to read letters or access memories. That would be disrespectful to her, and he wasn't in a war to resort to that kind of thing, especially with a coworker… his own boss.
"Well, she described in detail a boy who showed up solving problems with dragons that no one else could handle so quickly and effectively. I found that curious. And then she mentioned your… unusual affinity with dragons," said Scamander. "She also said that you speak a strange language, and the dragons obey. From that, well… you can imagine my curiosity. After all, I have dealt with dragons and know how difficult they are. It was also how I taught many dragonologists, and Mianna is one of them."
"I heard about that. They say you were called to deal with the Ukrainian Ironbelly in the first war… and that you were the only one who managed to communicate with them and make them obey, while the rest ended up being devoured..." Severus commented.
The man couldn't help but let out a sad smile. "Well… that is true." He had seen many people being killed by the dragons at his side.
"I am a great admirer of yours, Mr. Scamander. I read your book in the past weeks, and it gave me a lot of information about magical creatures, and I am very eager to know them all," Severus said.
The man nodded, satisfied, holding a few sheets. "Then I must admit… you have some interesting information here. I had never seen dragons from this perspective. You bring things I had not even thought of or known, perhaps I still have a lot to learn. Even the youngest can teach us something." He still seemed quite curious.
"I just tried to improve the information about the dragons a little… especially the ones here."
"You did more than that. You gave names, recorded behaviors, what they like, what they don't like… every detail. Mianna said you came in as an assistant, but you did much more than that." He looked directly at Severus.
"Have you ever thought about becoming a magizoologist?" The question was direct.
Severus did not respond immediately. He did not doubt that Scamander was thinking of something like a successor. But although he could contribute greatly in that area, that was not his main objective in this world.
His intention was directed toward something different — closer to combat than academia. He had to protect this world from something he still did not know.
Even so… he knew he could contribute more than anyone else in that century. Perhaps even surpass Scamander.
"It is an area that I believe will interest me greatly, Mr. Scamander… but I do not believe it is my main focus. Even so, I intend to study magical creatures more than anyone… perhaps even more than you...", he said, opening a friendly smile.
The man studied him for a moment before also forming a smile. Mianna stayed a bit to the side, simply letting the two talk, but she couldn't help being surprised by Severus's statement.
"I like the boy. In any case, just as a formality, I am Newt Scamander, it is an immense pleasure to meet you, Severus Snape."
"The pleasure is all mine. I did not think I would have this privilege so soon." Severus said, shaking the elderly man's hand, after all he was 78 years old.
"In any case, shall we go to the great nest? I would like to continue our conversation there… and see you deal with the beasts," said Scamander, somewhat excited.
"Of course."
Thus, the three apparated, arriving at the great nest.
"So, about the Hebridean Black? They said you helped it integrate, even being the only one of its species in the middle of the colony."
"The dragons are already used to me. I just instructed them, found a place for it and also observed it this morning. No dragon has bothered it so far," Severus replied.
There was no denying it — dragons were naturally violent and territorial. He only hoped they would accept the new member without conflict. The Hebridean Black was quite aggressive by nature, but as it was an old dragon, it ended up behaving.
And it was not uncommon for dragons to fight to expel a newcomer, especially when it was of a different species. The only Chinese dragon in the reserve, for example, had been rejected at first. It took months until the team managed to integrate it into the colony.
The first thing they did was look for the black dragon. When Severus arrived at a more isolated area, but still within the colony, the dragon was sleeping. As soon as it sensed his presence, it opened its eyes.
Severus approached calmly. The dragon raised its head and growled at Scamander and Mianna, for not recognizing them, but calmed down as soon as Severus touched its snout.
"You weren't lying…", Scamander commented, impressed.
Seeing a newly arrived dragon accept touch so easily from a human was something rare. That only proved that Severus truly had an unusual gift.
"See?", Mianna gave a small smile.
"You can come closer," Severus told them with a gesture.
The dragon no longer seemed so hostile. It inclined slightly as Severus spoke to it in that strange language. Clearly, the creature listened… and understood.
"What language is that?" Scamander asked, approaching, while Mianna remained a bit cautious behind him.
"This is High Valyrian," Severus replied.
"High Valyrian? I've never heard of it. Where did you learn it?" he asked immediately.
If there really existed a language capable of communicating with dragons… that could completely change the magical world.
"Actually… one day I woke up and simply knew how to speak this language." Severus didn't lie, but he also didn't tell the whole truth, giving a slight smile.
Scamander looked at him, clearly realizing that he was omitting something, but did not insist. Still, his curiosity spoke louder.
"Can I test you? Say something that I can speak to the dragon… a greeting and its name."
Severus thought for a moment. "Say, 'Rytsas, Umbrax'." [Say 'hello, Umbrax.']
"Rytsas, Umbrax…" He had some difficulty pronouncing the strange word, but as soon as Scamander spoke, the dragon immediately stared at him, opening its mouth and showing its teeth while growling.
"Dohaerās!" [Calm down], Severus said, speaking the dragon's name.
The creature ended up calming down, although it still remained alert. The same could be said of Mianna behind Scamander.
Scamander kept his eyes analyzing Severus, but now he looked at him as if he were something new, a species he had never seen.
"He understands what I say… but he doesn't obey me," Scamander pondered. "That means we are dealing with something similar to Parseltongue — speaking with snakes."
"What do you mean by that?" Mianna asked from behind, surprised. She also wanted to know about the strange language.
"I mean that we are, perhaps, facing the first recorded case in the world. Someone who can speak with dragons… the language of dragons." Scamander once again looked at Severus as if he were facing a newly discovered species.
Someone who could speak with dragons!
Mianna was not exactly shocked — she already knew he could communicate with them — but she was still surprised by Scamander's statement.
"See… it's not enough to just speak the words. The dragon needs to feel something. It's like Parseltongue. Someone can imitate the sounds, but the snake may not respond, because there is no real connection."
He continued: "Severus is not just imitating a language. He truly connects with the dragon and communicates with it. That is why this has never been recorded before. There are no records of someone who does this."
"Well… that's a bit unexpected," Severus said, scratching his head.
"More than unexpected… this is unprecedented. Something that has never happened before."
After that, Severus guided them to the cave. There was the Swedish Short-Snout dragon with the eggs.
Scamander continued asking questions along the way, now more interested in Severus than in the eggs themselves.
When they got close to the nest, his curiosity ceased — the eggs began to crack.
Severus had to calm the female with Scamander's arrival. The magizoologist himself also showed a certain skill, which made the situation a bit easier, but even so the dragon trusted mainly Severus.
She accepted Severus… but not strange humans so close to her eggs.
Even so, carefully, the three managed to approach. And now, the eggs began to crack!
And the three humans watched closely nearby while there were two a bit farther away, since Zebra did not like them getting too close, while the mother of the eggs remained there, vigilant.
She was a female of the Swedish Short-Snout dragon species with a spotted color, and the dragons were born as small hatchlings of the same color as the mother — spotted, like a zebra.
The hatchlings came out little by little, still getting used to the light. Their curious eyes first turned to the large mother, then to the two humans present there.
The snout of the enormous dragon touched the hatchlings, while some of them began to move more firmly.
Severus crouched down and picked one of them up. The small dragon looked between him and the female, confused.
"Like that, it will think you are the father," Scamander commented, laughing lightly, appreciating the scene.
Severus also let out a small smile. "Unfortunately, their father died a few months ago, didn't he?" he commented, looking at Mianna.
"Yes… he ended up getting sick. It was something rare, which we couldn't cure. Thankfully it wasn't contagious, but even so… we lost a fine male Swedish Short-Snout dragon specimen," she replied.
They remained there for a while, absorbing that magical moment — the birth of the dragons. After that, Severus returned the hatchlings to the mother. Scamander also held one of them for a moment, but soon returned it.
Other members of the team, Alastair Crowe and Cedric Vane, were farther away witnessing it. It was a rare event. Severus remained attentive, ready to calm the female if necessary.
After that, they left the cave and returned to have lunch together. During the meal, Severus talked with Scamander about his book.
"You are saying that you know where there are some communities of these creatures here in the reserve?" Scamander asked, interested upon hearing about some species living abundantly there.
"Of course. I went there myself to see."
"There are no records of them here… could you show me?" Scamander asked immediately.
Severus nodded. He touched Newt's shoulder, and the two disappeared.
They appeared in a more distant area of the forest. There, there were at least a hundred small creatures hopping from side to side. It was a herd of Mooncalves.
Scamander watched the scene with fascination.
Severus had already studied the region in advance, using his abilities to observe memories to find places through animals, not to mention that he could map the area. He had found several communities of magical creatures, in addition to many individuals scattered throughout the forest.
"Incredible… Severus, you would certainly be an extraordinary magizoologist. I believe you could truly surpass me," Scamander admitted.
Severus just listened. Scamander had no idea how far his abilities went — his capacity to connect with and even control animals.
He was not a Parselmouth, but he could control snakes with ease, just like any other creature.
After that, Severus took him to another community, a Diricawl community, where several creatures were hibernating inside a cave.
"I will remember these places to make some notes. Perfect, Severus… you have given me a lot of material to study." He said, satisfied.
"There is one more place, if you want to see it," Severus offered.
"You didn't mention it before."
"That's because it's special."
They apparated again. This time, they arrived at a cave with an opening at the top, where light entered directly. In the center, there was a large rocky peak.
Severus stopped. Scamander, beside him, widened his eyes upon seeing a red bird standing in its nest.
"A phoenix… wild!", he said, impressed.
"Yes. I found her a week ago. I've been observing her since then."
The phoenix above immediately raised its head upon noticing the two. In an instant, it spread its wings and advanced, letting out a screech.
This made Scamander a bit cautious. She advanced toward them and glided closer, before landing near a nearby rock, staring at them. She did not attack. Her eyes, however, were fixed on Severus.
"Hello," Severus said, opening a smile.
"So you know this phoenix?" Scamander asked, very surprised.
"You could say that. She is not the type of creature that allows someone to simply appear in her nest, and I observed her in silence. She noticed me on the first day… but did not attack me. We just communicated somehow, and I noticed that she is addicted to eating flames..."
Scamander stood there, fascinated by the way the phoenix stared at Severus. "Eating flames?! I can see that she likes you," he said immediately.
Scamander couldn't help but be surprised. At every moment, that boy impressed him more. He only knew of one family with a strong connection to phoenixes… but it was not something exclusive. Other wizards could also create that bond.
"In fact… she wants to connect with you," he concluded, watching the bird tilt its head from side to side, but always at Severus. She didn't even seem to care about Scamander's presence.
Severus approached slowly, and the phoenix allowed it. "She senses the flames within me…," he thought. "Since the moment she saw me."
Severus raised his hand, and a flame appeared at the tip of his finger. Scamander watched with curiosity. The flame seemed to sprout directly from his skin, as if it were natural.
Severus pointed toward the phoenix. The bird opened its beak and began to devour the flame.
She then jumped down from the rock, after Severus raised his other arm, letting her land there, while she continued feeding on the fire he produced with the finger of his other hand.
"I have never seen a phoenix behave like this!" Scamander exclaimed, clearly shocked. The phoenix seemed to enjoy it. It emitted small sounds, almost satisfied.
"Well… I think she wants me to be her cook or something like that," Severus joked.
The phoenix stared at him and let out a more irritated sound, as if protesting, but soon went back to feeding.
Severus simply snorted, letting her enjoy it for a few more moments before pulling his hand away.
"Go back to your nest. I'm leaving." The phoenix seemed reluctant, but did not follow him.
"Just the fact that a phoenix approaches like that is already something impressive," Scamander commented. "They are very unpredictable creatures. I imagine you have already seen one at Hogwarts… in the headmaster's office," he added.
For someone like Scamander, that certainly would not be new. But even so, seeing a young man with those abilities… was something out of the ordinary.
Severus just gave a faint smile. He knew that headmaster's office well, but it was certainly not a positive memory. At the moment, he wasn't even sure what to think about Headmaster Dumbledore. Even so, he kept that to himself — he was not someone he fully trusted.
They returned to the cabin, where Mianna was already preparing to serve some coffee in the late afternoon. While they spent some more time together, Scamander still discussed a few things with Severus about his book.
"Honestly, I never imagined I would have such a pleasant day!" he said sincerely. "You not only showed me something extraordinary — someone who can speak with dragons — but you also allowed me to witness the birth of hatchlings, several communities of magical creatures… even a phoenix. Besides that, you gave me new ideas."
He paused before continuing: "I can still say that you would be an excellent magizoologist. You could show the world that these magical creatures are not as dangerous as many believe."
Severus listened attentively. "I imagine you are still fighting against the extermination of magical creatures around the world, aren't you?" he asked.
Scamander nodded. "Of course. Many of these creatures do not harm by nature. There are still many massacres around the world. I managed to change some things throughout my life in some countries… but not all. I wish the world were more benevolent."
Severus understood well. There were governments with strict laws that allowed or even encouraged extermination. There were hunters, black markets… creatures being used both as a morbid curiosity and for the extraction of materials for potions and other purposes.
"Well, it was a great visit. It was very nice meeting you," Severus said.
"I say the same. I hope we keep in touch. I would like to continue following your progress… and I would also like you to visit my home as soon as you can. I am sure my family will enjoy meeting you."
Severus nodded. "Of course. I would also like to stay in contact."
He smiled as the two said their goodbyes. Mianna also spoke with Scamander before he finally left, apparating away from there.
Severus returned to his room. As he got ready to go to the bar, he thought that there was only one week left before returning to Hogwarts. He needed to prepare for his sixth year.
He was sure that there would be many interesting things to learn in the library — things the old Severus would never have imagined exploring with his former mindset.
As for the rest of the school year… Severus was not too concerned. He believed it would be easy to deal with everything.
