Third Person POV
Iceland.
...
...
Severus entered Iceland through the coldest side.
Mountains of ice rose everywhere, like a small frozen desert, as he continued teleporting through apparition until he finally reached the coast.
Even wearing only ordinary clothes, he did not feel cold due to his natural resistance, but knowing his clothes would be damaged by the freezing temperatures if he continued like that, he transformed his own hoodie into a fur coat in the style of House Stark through transfiguration.
"Once again... an extremely useful ability," he murmured, referring to transfiguration, which was certainly such a useful skill.
With that, he began walking across the frozen land. He spotted some nearby peaks and apparated there.
The air there was windier, filled with snow, before his body appeared once again. His feet touched the ground as he observed one of the highest points in the area.
The wind blew strongly while his eyes scanned the entire region. "I'll never find that thing like this..."
Severus closed his eyes and tried to imagine the cry for help once more, focusing on the connection he was feeling.
Then he moved farther east, finally arriving at the entrance of a cave.
'Help... help me...' The voice echoed once again through a connection he must have created through dreams. Even if it had not been intentional.
He entered the cave and continued walking.
There was nothing but ice, yet the cave was well structured. Even a person or a bear could walk through it comfortably.
That became evident when Severus encountered two polar bears. And they were not hibernating. There was a mother and her cub devouring something they had found.
The bear's eyes immediately turned toward Severus, letting out a low growl. Even so, Severus continued approaching without fear.
Then the bear stopped growling, merely observing him silently the next moment, suddenly displaying that behavior.
Severus walked up to it and touched its head. "I have no hostility. Calm down, mother. I'm only passing through." Severus said while easily connecting his mind to the bear's, calming it and ceasing to be seen as a threat — something he could do easily with any creature.
It was no wonder that, in his past life, he had been known as the 'Lord of All Creatures.'
In this life, he could very well earn that title again. Especially by conquering magical creatures so easily. He crouched before the cub, gently touching its fur.
After the small greeting, he stood up and continued walking deeper into the cave, leaving the bears behind, who merely watched him before returning to eating, as if they no longer cared about his presence.
Severus found some narrow passages. Then he extended his hand forward, and a ball of fire appeared above it.
He manipulated the flames as the sphere grew larger and larger, compressing the fire and forcing its molecules into combustion.
Small streaks of blue fire began to appear. Severus had discovered something interesting about his magical body in this world.
His flames could change due to the enormous amount of magic present there, far greater than in his past life. He could amplify the heat of the flames even further, reaching temperatures he had never been capable of achieving before.
And as that happened, they slowly began to take on a bluish hue, destroying even components of the air itself due to the extreme overheating.
In any case, the flames had not yet become completely blue, but they already possessed some traces of it.
Severus understood perfectly what that meant for his flames. They were gaining a new strength. Blue flames are more powerful than red flames.
Could he have apparated through that path? He could have. But he did not want to solve everything with a simple teleport. Where would the fun be if he could not test all of his abilities?
He examined the walls while water began flowing in small waterfalls from the melting ice. The overheating was simply destroying all the ice, even the ceiling, the ground, and especially the walls, which opened enough for him to enter.
After that, he extinguished the flames and moved forward while steam from the heated water filled the place.
He walked a little farther until he finally found a very large area.
And there was the creature from his dreams.
It remained trapped in the ice, with both wings raised, yet still marked by a blue glow upon its feathers.
"What are you...?" Severus approached and touched the ice closest to the creature, which he still could not fully see due to the frozen distortions.
'You came... Get me out of here... please... help me...' The voice echoed once more.
"Let's do this." Severus decided while analyzing the ice.
"Magical ice..." he murmured.
He quickly realized that he would not be able to solve that merely using his wand. He put the wand away. Then he sighed and took a few steps back.
At the center of the area, he raised his arms.
Flames began to emerge around him, dancing through the air before completely enveloping his body in an enormous hurricane of fire.
Severus kept his arms extended while remaining surrounded by the flames.
His wand did not have enough power to release that absurd amount of fire. Well, it did — Ignis Maledictus, which was the incantation for Fiendfyre. But it was a spell Severus had not yet trained, so it could spiral out of control.
So he directly used his own magical core, without a wand.
It was something less controlled, but all he needed to do was heat the ice. He did not need precision. Then he thrust his arms forward.
A massive explosion of flames erupted.
A gigantic blaze shot directly toward the ice before him.
The fire exploded, illuminating the entire cave while the air itself heated violently, melting the ice in every direction.
Severus continued releasing fire for some time. But he soon realized the ceiling was beginning to collapse little by little due to the heating and melting, with water falling from all sides.
He immediately stopped. The flames still danced around his body before being canceled and disappearing completely.
Severus immediately released a wave of ice around the area, reinforcing the entire structure of the cave once more.
The ice hardened again, with the place filled with steam and smoke.
He had heated the area so much that, upon freezing again, several stalactites formed across the ceiling after water flowed in small waterfalls along the walls and roof.
Severus realized he could not continue using those flames. He would certainly end up bringing the entire cave down on top of himself.
"Let's try this another way." He approached once more while the ice, despite being shattered by the flames, slowly began regenerating and freezing again.
"This is absurdly resistant... Well, let's try this." He placed his hand on the ice and felt the magic within it.
Then, instead of releasing magic...
Severus tried something else.
He tried to absorb the magic.
The next instant, the ice began glowing with his hand pressed against it.
Severus started to feel the magic of that ice entering his body, becoming pure energy for his magical core.
"Interesting... I can absorb magical ice. Would this also work with fire?" Severus pondered with satisfaction.
The ice began losing its magic, slowly turning into ordinary ice.
Then it started to crack.
Small cracks began appearing everywhere as that frozen wall where the creature was trapped completely lost its magical properties.
Even the last drop of magic was absorbed. It did not take more than ten seconds before the cracks began spreading violently throughout the entire structure while the ice shattered little by little.
Then everything exploded.
Severus watched the creature fall along with the blocks of ice while observing what appeared to be a bird.
He walked through the frozen debris until he reached it and picked it up in his arms.
He immediately checked the creature's condition.
It was extremely weakened.
No. It was dying.
"How strange... Does that mean the ice magic was created by it? Did it trap itself somehow?" Severus immediately realized that, by absorbing the magic from the ice, he had also absorbed the bird's life force. No... The ice was the animal's very life force.
However, Severus narrowed his eyes and did not seem to have any exaggerated reaction to the fact the creature was dying. He merely placed it carefully on the ground before pressing two fingers against the chest of the cold bird.
It was extremely beautiful. It looked like a phoenix. But at the same time, it was not.
"Or at least... I've never heard of an ice phoenix..."
He took the very energy he had absorbed into his core and began guiding it back through his arm before applying it directly into the bird, returning everything he had absorbed.
That immediately caused the creature to react.
It slowly began coming back to life.
"If this really is a phoenix... can I absorb its energy and even kill what should be an immortal bird?" Severus pondered, interested in this theory.
"Would that also apply to fire phoenixes? If I absorbed the energy of a phoenix's flames, could I kill it?" Severus wondered that not out of malice, but simply from curiosity to better understand how things worked in that world.
Phoenixes were creatures considered immortal. They could even be struck by an Avada Kedavra before turning into ashes and being reborn as a small chick.
But what he had done seemed different. He could directly absorb the essence of a phoenix.
Well... he still had no concrete proof. After all, what he was seeing was merely a strange blue bird with ice powers, nothing indicated that it was a real phoenix.
He had not performed any tests to confirm whether that truly was a conventional phoenix. And perhaps he did not even intend to.
Maybe he could verify it the next time he encountered one. Perhaps even by using the headmaster's phoenix — he would certainly become very irritated, after all, he had made him take that Unbreakable Vow, so it would only be fair to use Fawkes as a test subject, right?
In any case, Severus continued returning the rest of the energy to the creature. The bird finally began opening its eyes.
There was no need to use healing magic. All he needed to restore was its essence.
"You should no longer be dying now." Severus said while the phoenix swayed slightly before standing up and looking at him.
It possessed a long, beautiful flowing tail, and its blue plumage was also extremely beautiful. Besides that, it was approximately the size of a chicken. On its head were three pointed crests resembling a frozen crown.
"What is your name?" Severus observed the bird staring at him.
It barely gave him time to react before the bird pecked his hand. Severus immediately pulled back upon realizing that had not been a simple peck.
Bright lines began to appear across the palm of his right hand.
"What is this...? A contract?" He was surprised while the phoenix turned its gaze toward him.
'Yes. A binding contract,' the bird replied in his mind.
"Wait... what? Why did you do this?" Severus raised an eyebrow.
'Because you saved me.'
Severus merely shook his head. It seemed the second world was even stranger than he could have imagined.
The creature was truly speaking with him, not because he was using mind arts, but through the magical contract it had created. He had never heard of something like that.
"What are you? Are you an ice phoenix or something?" Severus asked.
Clearly, the energy coming from the creature was exclusively cold. Its powers were completely connected to the ice element.
'You could say so. My name is Articuno. I am a bird that controls the ice element and brings winter, but you may classify me as a phoenix, properly speaking.'
"Articuno..." Severus repeated the name.
Certainly, Scamander would probably be completely dumbfounded if Severus presented a new species of bird — after all, there was nothing about it in his books... Perhaps a variant of a phoenix, or whatever that creature actually was.
"Well... whatever you are, I'll keep calling you an ice phoenix, just like you said yourself. But first... let's understand what happened to you. How did you contact me, and how did you end up inside that ice?"
Severus wanted answers.
'Of course. But can we leave this place? I don't want to remain in the location that trapped me for more than 2,000 years. I want to breathe a proper cold breeze outside.' The phoenix replied mentally as the two of them left the enormous frozen cave.
Severus saw no problem in apparating onto the top of an icy peak, with the phoenix appreciating the cold snowy wind.
"Did you place yourself in that ice?" Severus asked while observing his hand, still marked by the contract.
'Yes... but unintentionally.'
Severus looked at the phoenix with a certain mocking expression.
'I don't like this feeling you're giving me.' She noticed. 'I was releasing my power involuntarily after wanting to bring an ice storm to the island. Unfortunately, it ended up spiraling out of control, and that trapped me.'
'Well... that makes sense. After all, once I absorbed the magical ice, you were dying. Your power and your essence were that ice...' Severus said mentally, since speaking there was somewhat difficult.
"You know this place was not always such a wasteland. Even though it was a region of intense cold, it should not have been so uninhabited. There were non-magical humans living here... But because my power remained sealed here for so long, the place eventually became extremely frozen," she explained.
'I have to admit that sounds sad... being trapped for 2,000 years certainly could not have been pleasant.' Severus remained silent for a few seconds before asking: 'Are there more creatures like you out there?'
'No. I am the only one alive now.' The phoenix lowered her head slightly before continuing. 'We maintained the balance of the planet... but I have not felt any of my sisters for a thousand years anymore. That means they have gone extinct.' The phoenix named Articuno transmitted her thoughts with sorrow.
'I'm sorry for your loss... and you made a contract with me, but there's no need for that. I don't mind if you want to live freely, as long as you don't make me regret freeing you. So you can undo the contract and live your life.' Severus requested.
But the phoenix did not seem to agree with his words. 'No. I know what you are. I know what you represent. It would be an honor to follow you, just as any magical creature would wish to stand at your side.'
'As long as I exist, winter will be with you. If you need it, I will already be there to shape the very season itself.' She spoke with pride.
Severus raised an eyebrow. 'Thank you, I suppose... but I should head back. It's been 3 hours since I left Great Britain."
There was no way to simply apparate across that entire distance. At least, he did not have enough energy to travel nearly fifteen hundred kilometers back to Scotland in a single jump.
But now he could take a shortcut.
Instead of advancing only five or ten kilometers, he could remember the places where he had stopped previously, allowing him to apparate five hundred or even a thousand kilometers if his memory was good enough.
The phoenix simply flew up and landed on his shoulder.
'I will go with you,' she declared.
'Are you sure? Isn't this your natural habitat? You told me you can also use apparition...'
'Exactly. But my place now will be by your side.'
'Besides, instead of you needing to travel alone, I can apparate us directly anywhere once I fully recover. But going to the southern lands is possible even now.'
'You'll be able to travel anywhere in the world with me...' Severus thought with a certain surprise. No other phoenix could do that; this was an extremely bold claim.
Articuno puffed out her chest proudly upon hearing that from Severus. Severus stared at the bird for a few seconds.
She truly seemed proud of that. 'Very well, then. Let's test whether you can really do that.'
With those words, the phoenix spread her wings. Then everything exploded into an intense white and blue light that completely enveloped Severus.
They were not flames.
It was pure icy energy.
The phoenix had created the contract precisely because of that.
Even if the bond was a debt for her salvation, no one would be capable of enduring her apparition, which was formed from absolute cold.
If it had been anyone else, they would have frozen instantly due to the absurd temperature created by the bird's energy.
But Severus was different. He possessed a natural and magical resistance to cold and winter.
Just as extreme fire could not burn him easily, ice also could not completely freeze him.
In his past life, he had not possessed such resistance to ice. But in that magical world, his magical body had adapted even better to it.
