"So, Severus, are you going to tell us the story behind that strange bird sitting on your shoulder?" Mianna asked while looking at Articuno perched on Severus's shoulder, as they all gathered around the table for lunch in the middle of the day.
All four of them — Mianna, Alastair, Cedric, and the new intern named Ronnie — looked at Severus and, most of all, observed the bird calmly and almost gracefully resting on his right shoulder.
"It's a long story," Severus simply replied, returning to his meal.
"A long story? Half the area within 50 meters of the cabin has been frozen! Tell us what that thing is," Lady Mianna said with little satisfaction as she crossed her arms.
There were several blocks of ice the size of buildings outside, in the middle of the forest, all because Severus had simply decided to test Articuno's power.
He hadn't even managed to stop it before the bird itself froze everything, creating a winter like that while they were still at the end of summer.
While a normal phoenix could cast fire through its body, Articuno was very different. That bird could unleash a white beam directly from its mouth, releasing its freezing power at short and medium range. When the white beam hit anything in its path, it froze everything instantly — even the air itself became frozen, creating ice structures that should not have been possible.
Severus had to conclude that the raw power of that bird was absurd. He said he was still weakened after being trapped in ice for millennia, but informed him that at his peak, he could generate a snowstorm capable of covering all of Great Britain. He truly was what could be described as winter itself incarnate, in other words.
And just the ice created outside the cabin had caused the surrounding climate to begin changing after a few minutes, with cold winds blowing so fiercely that no one could go outside without wearing a coat. It was an extremely sudden change of season for everyone there, and the house fireplace had been lit because of it. They knew it had something to do with that creature, which left them quite intrigued in a way.
Severus, obviously, was not affected by the cold air. But he was the only one there who wasn't.
"I should apologize for that. I truly didn't imagine Articuno would possess so much magical power," Severus said. "By the way, that's his name. And you could say he's an ice phoenix."
He decided to classify him that way, even though his origin was probably far more complex than simply calling him a phoenix.
But it was the best way to explain it.
"By Merlin... where did you find this phoenix?" Mianna asked, unable to hide the intrigue in her eyes as she looked at the bird.
Articuno remained perched on Severus's shoulder. He seemed to enjoy the attention, displaying it proudly while his eyes wandered over all the humans there.
'It is good to know they understand the power of my magnitude,' the phoenix said mentally. Only Severus could hear his voice.
'I'm glad you understand the human language, but you could have told me what you were capable of before I asked you to demonstrate it.' Severus murmured mentally to him. That would have avoided creating a winter in this place.
Articuno immediately seemed delighted. Severus could feel the pride bursting through the bond he had created with him. 'If it had been like that, we wouldn't be having as much fun as we are now. After all, you asked me to let loose.'
'And I must say... I still held back.' He added.
Severus merely shook his head, unable to refute that phoenix's arguments.
In any case, he had already grown used to the bird perched on his shoulder, since he did not seem willing to leave that spot unless it was to eat something.
After that, Severus left the cabin and went to his small garden. It was full of plants and flowers ready to be harvested. He began collecting everything and dismantling his secret garden bed. He no longer needed to plant there; he was going to Hogwarts in two days.
'You have the gift of the forest,' Articuno said while observing him from the same place as always — his shoulder.
Severus merely nodded. "Is it that obvious?"
'No. But you are different from the druids.'
'The druids... you knew them? I couldn't find anything besides a few remnants living in some places around the world, but I read that they are nowhere near what the druids of old once were...' Severus commented.
'The druids were an ancient order. I have not had contact with them for a very long time. So I do not know much about their current state in this world, which is different from my era before the freezing...' He informed him.
'But you are not like them.' He added shortly after.
'I noticed that from what I read about them, even though it wasn't much, but I realized my powers are quite different.'
'Druids possess powers that help plants grow, yes... but from what I can see, you make them grow instantly...'
'More than that...' Severus thought without saying it to Articuno. He could even alter the molecular structure of plants — their attributes, in other words, their genetics.
'You can go far beyond that, can't you?' Even so, he asked.
Severus said nothing. He grabbed his wand and pointed it forward. Without any incantation, he released his magic. In the next moment, he twirled the wand and made a slight upward gesture with his hand.
Tremors appeared, and then sprouts emerged from the ground. Roots began to grow rapidly while pure wood expanded violently.
A tree grew within seconds in the middle of the forest, becoming as large as any other around it.
'Well... that is not something druids could do. Making a tree sprout like that...' Articuno murmured while looking at Severus in surprise.
Severus observed the tree. In truth, that had been quite simple for him. He had already been capable of creating trees in his past life, but now he mastered that power even more in this world.
He no longer even needed to use seeds to create trees. He could make them grow from nothing.
Although the wand limited him somewhat, he could create many trees and even an entire forest without one. This power was his main element, if he were willing to take the risk. Severus still wanted to refine it.
Unfortunately, he had not had enough time to fully develop it during the holidays. 'Perhaps I'll try to do it discreetly at Hogwarts...'
Though he highly doubted he would manage not to attract attention. After all, no student could simply make a tree grow out of nowhere. In truth, nobody in the magical world could do that, not even herbology specialists.
He wanted to develop this power; he could create forms far more powerful than transfiguration. And it would probably become the greatest power he would possess in that life.
In his past life, he had never needed to use it for combat. He only used wood to create necessary objects or convenient structures.
But in this life...
He would take the abilities of the forest to another level. He only needed time to develop them.
'Tell me something, Articuno. You said you can teleport across great distances, right?'
'Of course.'
'If I asked you to teleport me above Iceland, in the middle of the sea, would you be able to do it?'
"Of course."
"Then I would like to go there later," Severus said this time.
There was something else he needed to train.
'Why do you need to go to the sea? And why later?' Articuno asked curiously.
"I need to test an extremely dangerous fire spell."
'You are talking about Fiendfyre. I see no other spell you would need to isolate yourself to use, unless they invented something after two thousand years...'
'So you know it... but yes... I need to test the cursed fire. I need to see to what degree I can control those flames.'
He had no idea what would happen, but he would test that power. He saw no reason to refrain from using something so powerful, even if it was a dark and forbidden spell. The sea would be the best place to unleash it.
'I understand...' Articuno merely nodded.
"And going back to your question about why later... Because a dragon is arriving," Severus said as an enormous beating of wings echoed through the skies.
Soon after, a gigantic dragon flew over them. "She's been poking at my mind ever since I didn't show up to visit her yesterday. Asking where I was." Severus could perfectly feel the dragon's mental connection drawing closer and closer.
Belarus had been searching for him all day until Severus finally gave in and revealed his location to her. Severus raised his head as she approached with the thunderous beating of her wings and landed near them. Trees ended up being crushed, and she moved toward him right after. There was nothing left there that he needed to preserve, with all the plants already removed and stored inside his ring.
The dragon reached him while Severus gently touched the creature's snout. "It's only been a few days, girl. I wanted you to get used to being without me. After all, I'm leaving," Severus said.
The dragon let out a dissatisfied growl.
'You also have control over dragons...? You are full of surprises.' Articuno murmured without being intimidated by the dragon, still remaining on Severus's shoulder.
Severus simply ignored the ice phoenix while massaging Belarus's snout.
"Since you came all the way here, let's say goodbye properly," Severus said as he teleported directly onto the dragon's back, settling himself there.
"Come on, Belarus. Sōvēs."
He gave the command.
The dragon opened her enormous wings amidst the broken trees, destroying even part of Severus's garden.
Sōvēs began flying above the forest while rising higher and higher into the skies.
Severus smiled on her back, and Belarus roared joyfully toward the heavens.
He intended to take one last ride with Belarus. And so they continued flying for several hours atop the dragon.
They crossed through the forest and later headed toward the dragons' nest, while Mianna could not help but raise an eyebrow with her intern beside her as they watched Severus flying — a sight that had become normal over the past few weeks.
Severus was always practicing dragon riding; it was not only with Belarus. The other dragons also seemed to enjoy carrying Severus through the skies.
It was surprising for all of them, after working there for years, that no dragon had ever allowed them onto its back, which showed the gift the boy possessed with those beasts.
One could say there were very few wizards in the world capable of flying on dragons without being eaten, and certainly the sight of a teenager doing so would turn the entire world upside down. But no one besides the reserve staff knew about this fact, not even the aurors who visited the place whenever necessary.
The flight lasted an hour in total until Belarus began descending. Articuno had no difficulty remaining on Severus's shoulder during the entire flight, until Belarus finally landed.
"Good girl. I'll be leaving tomorrow, but I'll come back to visit you as soon as I can, alright?" he said near her head.
The dragon did not seem pleased by that at all, almost treating Severus as though he belonged to her. She let out a dissatisfied roar, but Severus maintained a calm tone while stroking her head.
Little by little, she calmed down somewhat. "Belarus, I'm with you. You were the first animal I truly bonded with in this world. We are connected, so neither distance nor time will separate us," Severus said with affection in his voice.
He loved his animals. He always had, both in his past life and in this one.
'Can we go now?' he asked after stepping away from Belarus.
'Of course,' the phoenix replied, though there was a melancholic glimmer when he bid Severus farewell. Then he covered Severus in a glow of white flames and cold.
In the next moment, Severus appeared in the middle of the sea about five meters above the air, surrounded by small floating glaciers, with the atmosphere completely breaking away from the previous climate. He did not fall immediately; instead, he was caught by Articuno, who kept his claws hooked into his clothes and carried Severus with ease.
"You can let me go," Severus requested.
The bird did so, and when he fell, he cast Glacius magic into the middle of the sea, creating a platform of ice and landing smoothly.
"Now let's see what I'm capable of...! It's better if you stay far away," Severus asked Articuno.
Articuno did not hesitate to do so. He flew into the distance before firing a beam from his mouth directly into the water, beginning to create a structure of ice. A small island about thirty meters wide rapidly formed in only thirty seconds under his beam. It was impressive.
Even so, he landed at the peak and observed Severus from afar.
Severus sighed there in the middle of the frozen surroundings. He pointed his wand and cast the spell.
"Pestis Incendium!"
In the next moment, a mass of flames exploded. As expected, the fire roared alive while burning everything around it, creating multiple forms.
