Chapter 06 – A Night at the Leaky Cauldron.

HP – Jon Arctic as Severus Snape!

[Chapter Size: 2900 Words.]

Third Person POV

The Leaky Cauldron.

...

...

Severus opened his eyes. He did not wake up calmly; his clothes were a mess.

He could hear loud noises coming from downstairs. He sighed, sitting up in bed as he picked up his wand.

"Tempus." He cast as the mist showed that it was eight o'clock at night on the same day...

His eyes fell on his belongings left in a corner of the place, and he couldn't help but think about what had happened inside Ollivander's shop.

Wand after wand touching his hand. All of them were tested. Some even responded more easily, but all of them showed resistance. None could truly identify with him.

In the end, the shop began to be damaged one after another. His tests got out of control. Both his and Ollivander's clothes were also destroyed in the middle of the tests. No matter how many times the old man went back to get a new wand — both of them had grown tired in the end.

Severus, seeing that the man was trustworthy, began to better explain his attributes: his abilities with nature, with the elements, and the fact that he could control opposing forces at the same time, such as fire and ice. There were more things Severus could have added, but he did not speak about his deepest secrets.

And Ollivander seemed thoughtful after that. In the end, he returned to Severus with a sigh. 'We don't have a wand that meets those requirements. I have never seen anything like your case, Mr. Snape. What I can say is that I can try to work on this in the future. I will have to find a combination of wood and core that better suits you.'

He had seen Severus cast magic without a wand: fire, ice, even making plants grow in the palm of his hand, taking some that Ollivander cared for behind the shop as a pastime. That left the wandmaker quite impressed — and stunned. He had never seen anything like it.

In the end, they reached a conclusion.

Severus could use more magic without a wand than with one. Even if it was only elemental magic and nature magic.

In other words, even when the wand responded, it also limited his powers and spells. It was as if any wand in his hands was not capable of channeling all of his strength.

'That must be why they are rejecting you. They know they cannot express your full potential,' Ollivander had concluded when they reached that...

Severus remained silent and ended up leaving through the Floo network, since there were still people outside the shop wanting to see who had frozen the wand shop, without resolving the problem of his wand.

He and Ollivander promised to exchange correspondence to try to find a solution for Severus's case. If Severus could have a suitable wand, it would already be a good start in that new world.

Severus still held the wand in his hand as the mist indicating the time began to fade from his mind. He gave one last look at the wand.

"Well... it seems it will be just you and me for now."

His eyes returned to the door from where the sound was coming. He looked at his clothes... pointed his wand at them, and began to transfigure; his clothes started to change and he chose a common outfit, with a Muggle hoodie with a hood.

'For now, this will do...' Severus said, not failing to think that his former self had not thought of simply learning and using transfiguration to improve his clothes? For the current Severus, it was a very good solution.

The hoodie seemed like a bad choice, since it was summer, and it would certainly be hot, but that would not bother him. He possessed a natural resistance to heat and, if he wanted, he could cast a wandless icy mist around his own body to cool himself down. Not that it was necessary.

He walked to the door and went downstairs, finding the Leaky Cauldron full. He put on the hood and walked to the counter, entering the pub. He found the bartender talking to a group of people at the counter; that would be where he would start his investigation.

Tom's eyes, the bartender, narrowed at Severus coming in with a hood. "You shouldn't be here, Mr. Snape," he said, suspicious.

"Isn't that the boy with the pretty eyes who arrived all messed up this afternoon?", a middle-aged woman laughed beside him. She was one of the few who had seen Severus before and were still there; she was slightly drunk.

"I couldn't sleep anymore. I just came... well, you know. I've been out of the wizarding world for a few weeks and wanted to know how things are," Severus said in a calm tone, but seeming a little lost; he looked like a lost student, but intentionally so. He wanted to appear that way, since he wanted to gather information.

"Ah, a curious little wizard," said a man, around his 50s, beside him. "And why are you wearing a hood?"

"Well, in that case the boy is right. As suspicious as it may look to wear a Muggle hoodie here, it's better than looking like a boy who barely left his mother's teats in the middle of a bar like the Leaky Cauldron...", an elderly man from the group laughed.

Severus said nothing, only shrugged. He was still waiting for his answer.

"But if you really want to know about the wizarding world... well, it's a bit turbulent. There are rumors that You-Know-Who is starting to recruit werewolves and wizards to his side," Tom said, in a low tone, so that only those at the counter could hear.

"Another turmoil...", said another elderly man sitting in a corner drinking something strong, it seemed. "Our days of peace are ending. A few years ago we had that damned Grindelwald... and a few decades later, now we have this 'You-Know-Who'. Peace didn't last long. And believe me, I know what will happen when this dark lord truly starts to act. I know, because I lived through the terror of Grindelwald in my youth...", the man said, with a tired and clearly drunk tone.

"Are you Muggle-born, boy?", the bartender asked, curious.

Severus shook his head. "No. Actually, I am a half-blood."

"Half-bloods will also be in danger. What they want is purity... and that will end in a cruel war." Said the elderly man from the group.

"Look who's talking, a man from the Dolohov family, clearly devoted to the dark side," another mocked.

The man who had spoken before got irritated. "Don't compare me to the members of my family! I certainly don't like Muggles meddling in the magical world trying to change it, but I also do not condone their extermination. With this dark lord, and even what my family wants with this...", he muttered.

'Extermination of Muggles...', Severus thought about it.

"Don't think too much about it, boy. You must be a student of what? Fifth, sixth year?", Tom guessed correctly. "This fight is not yours yet."

"Do you think the dark lord would care about hurting children?", replied the elderly man from the Dolohov family. He turned back to Severus.

"I am Alarmac Dolohov. It is a pleasure, boy..." He extended his hand and Severus shook it.

"Severus Snape, Mr. Dolohov. It is a pleasure as well." Severus returned the handshake.

"You do not seem like the other boys your age... I can see it in your eyes... And I know that 'he' is recruiting at Hogwarts," he added in a dark tone. "Especially from Slytherin house."

Everyone there fell silent. They certainly did not seem happy about that. The old man did not say anything else either.

Wizards who only wanted to live their lives normally were not at all satisfied with that new scenario emerging — a world about to enter a war where a group of people wanted the dominance of pure-bloods over the reins of the magical world.

"Tell me, Mr. Snape... which house in Hogwarts are you from?", another man asked, curious.

"I think you are already asking too much. Leave the boy alone," Tom intervened.

Severus looked at him and noticed a perceptive look in him. 'He knew.' The bartender knew that he was from Slytherin, somehow.

"Mr. Tom. Do you have newspapers of the latest attacks?", Severus asked him curiously.

Certainly all he needed was to look at the newspapers. The attacks had been splashed mainly across the Daily Prophet since the beginning of his fifth year: murders of Muggles, disappearances, houses burned without any Muggle authority knowing who was responsible. It was during this period that Severus's relationship with Lily began to deteriorate even more. He could even understand his old friend better now, at least in certain aspects.

"Of course..." He kept his gaze on Severus under the hood. "Looks like I'm dealing with another one playing the hero...", the bartender muttered, half grumbling, as he picked up a stack of newspapers and placed them in front of Severus on the counter. Severus was not the first to ask for something like that.

They were newspapers from the past weeks, months, and even from the last year. Severus began to read them one by one, focusing on the main headlines that talked about the attacks.

The Leaky Cauldron was full of all kinds of wizards. And, naturally, a teenager wearing a hood, hiding his face while avidly reading stacks of newspapers about attacks, caught the attention of some.

Not everyone there had good intentions.

Severus was being watched by two men at the back of the place, discreetly. They used Disillusionment Charms to remain hidden while listening to the conversations. They were spies, and seeing someone devouring newspapers about the attacks caught their attention.

"We should investigate," one of them said.

One of the men approached the counter. His appearance was somber, and his gaze did not stop analyzing the boy. "I'll have some more firewhisky, barman," he said to Tom, before turning his attention to Severus.

"So many attacks... It's regrettable, isn't it?" He commented, curious, trying to start a conversation and find out who the person under the Muggle hood was.

Severus raised his gaze and looked at the man.

The man was surprised to realize that there was only a boy under that hood — not only did the bright and unusual green eyes stand out, but this was a young man who was no more than a student in the middle of his school life at Hogwarts.

Even so, he possessed some skill in Legilimency. And he decided to test it on the boy, because even so, it was somewhat unusual and suspicious for a boy interested in newspapers about the attacks to be sitting among several older wizards.

He struck to invade the young man's mind without anyone noticing; he needed to see why he was so interested in the dark lord's attacks.

Severus could feel something trying to invade his mind and immediately responded upon realizing it. "This?!"

Something simply activated at that moment. Severus not only blocked the invasion — suddenly, he found himself inside the man's own mind.

Severus found himself inside a vision:

'You must seek any information about suspicious comments and identify blood traitors who are against our lord, around Diagon Alley. The dark lord demands that we gather information.'

The two men — one being the one whose mind was being invaded and his colleague — were kneeling before an older man with platinum hair.

Severus recognized him immediately; he had seen him before... It was Lucius's father.

The two nodded after hearing his words. 'It will be done, Lord Malfoy.'

'Then go. You have the entire summer to listen, observe, and inform me of anything abnormal and suspicious that you find.'

The vision ended there.

Severus, returning to the bar, blinked a few times. Even the man seemed dizzy, not believing that a boy had blocked his Legilimency. He was not extremely talented at it, not even close to skilled, but he still possessed the ability — it was not for nothing that he had been chosen to be an ear in Diagon Alley. Even so, being blocked by a student was unthinkable.

Everyone who observed the interaction was somewhat confused. Severus himself and the man seemed dazed.

"Your whisky," Tom said in a harsh tone suddenly, breaking the silence as he placed the glass against the suspicious man's chest with some force, making him take a few steps back.

The man looked at the whisky, then at Severus, went back to the glass and then nodded. "Of course... whisky. Here it is..." He placed a few coins on the counter.

He did not fail to cast one last glance at Severus before returning to the corner of the pub.

"Are you alright, boy? What the hell happened there?", Tom asked, knowing that something was wrong, but unable to recognize the silent Legilimency battle that had taken place.

"I don't know...", Severus shook his head, admitting.

He did not understand how he managed to enter that man's mind after blocking the invasion. In his memories, he knew a bit of Legilimency — he could read surface thoughts or what a person was focused on at the moment, but not deep memories like that. For that, he would normally need to use a wand.

And there... it had simply happened.

And the man did not even seem to notice. He was probably just dazed from having his ability blocked by a student, nothing more...

"Well, I would be careful. Those are not ordinary people... and they are probably marked and spies... Damn it, I shouldn't have given you those newspapers. Those spies are already everywhere. I'm going to have to start throwing them out of here," Tom said, clearly dissatisfied.

Severus stacked the newspapers again.

He wanted to understand if there was any pattern — whether the Death Eaters chose their victims randomly or if there was planning. But everything indicated that it was random.

They simply chose a place... and attacked.

Severus did not like that at all. How could he have been so foolish as to sympathize with that ideology? He had been lost and alone, but he did not need to desperately seek power through barbaric acts... The former Severus did not seem to understand what the newspapers were saying... To him, Voldemort seemed like the one who would lead the wizarding world to greatness, but that was not how things would actually turn out...

Families were being killed. Children were disappearing. When they were found, they had often been tortured...

Severus had seen so many deaths in his past life that, there, he had lost some of his sensitivity to being shocked by all kinds of atrocities, after all he had seen everything as Jon Arctic. Even so, it deeply angered him, even if he hid everything behind his stoic face.

"Can you give me a butterbeer?", Severus asked in the end.

The barman nodded, noticing his bad mood. "You are strange, Severus Snape... very strange," Tom commented.

The boy was clearly irritated after reading the newspapers, almost as if he wanted to hunt the dark lord personally — a foolish and suicidal thought, in the bartender's view.

Severus did not respond and no one among the group said anything more, they only watched in silence, clearly interested in Severus. He simply took the mug and drank, emptying it in a single gulp. He took a few sickles to pay, but the barman raised his hand.

"No. This one is on the house." Severus nodded in gratitude.

"Well... I'm going back to my room. I have some books I want to study." The barman did not stop him, but still had something to say.

"Boy, just be careful with those two. They marked you the moment one of them came here. After what happened here, they will certainly come after you. I'll call some Aurors to keep an eye on them. The Ministry is eager to capture the dark lord's lackeys, so don't worry... but even so, be careful."

"He's right, boy." The man from the Dolohov family said.

"If you need anything, come to me as well." Said the middle-aged woman who was drinking. "By the way, I'm Adreline Xumbla, handsome boy." She added.

"For God's sake, Adreline, he's a boy!" Said another man.

"Be quiet, you decrepit old man! I'm just offering help, and something more, only if he wants..." She gave a mischievous smile.

Severus did not react to the older woman's invitation; she seemed like those women who liked to sleep with younger boys. "I appreciate it, now I must go." He simply said.

"Don't worry about this old woman, but come to us if you need anything, boy. By the way, I'm Robert Santigo." The man introduced himself, shaking Severus's hand, who nodded.

He left the counter and headed to his room. As soon as he entered, he went to his things and picked up one of the books he had bought.

With nothing else to do, he opened the book about magical runes.

He did not fail to pick up a quill and ink, beginning to mark the book with notes, as he always did when he was learning something — but writing in High Valyrian, since no one in that world knew that language. No one could read his notes.

He stayed until dawn, reading page after page while scribbling in the book, until sleep came.

He decided to sleep. The next morning, he would leave.

He would head to Muggle London, in search of a job for that summer.
