[Chapter Size: 2500 Words.]
Third Person POV
The Leaky Cauldron.
...
...
"Focus," Severus said to himself as he tried to reactivate another ability from his other life — one of the most important, the one he had been born with before any other blessing from the gods and his other powers.
Warg, the ability to connect with and control animals.
He tried to expand his mind as soon as he woke up and ate some things he had picked up in Diagon Alley yesterday, his mind stretching beyond that room, searching for small animals around the Leaky Cauldron — rodents, insects, anything alive.
It was difficult at first. Perhaps that body was not used to it. Perhaps his brain was still processing that new ability. He had some difficulty, but soon he began to see beyond the walls, sensing the life of rats, cockroaches, mosquitoes, and other insects.
Beneath the Leaky Cauldron, rats began to flicker. Their eyes changed... and Severus started to see through them, while still remaining in the room, with his own eyes open, reading some of his notes.
"Good..." Severus murmured, satisfied.
He began to move the rats, making a group of three advance and spread out in different directions. Passing beneath the pub, they started to search the alleys near the Leaky Cauldron: one inside Diagon Alley itself and the other two in the Muggle area of London.
He found what he was looking for. The two men who had been watching him the previous night — one of them had tried to invade his mind.
Severus paused for a moment to think that morning. That ability... was something he had brought from his other life, but now it seemed different. He had probably become a potential Legilimens. His ability to enter animals might have also awakened a more powerful skill: the ability to read minds, and he didn't even need to use a wand to enter deeper memories, and the victim wouldn't even know.
He observed the two men, considering the possibilities.
He had the ability to enter animals. In his past life, there were ancient laws he followed: do not mate while inside an animal's mind, do not consume human flesh, and definitely never attempt to enter the mind of another human.
However, Severus realized something.
That world was different.
'Should I try this...?' he thought.
It was a dangerous field — a territory he had never dared to enter, as he knew the risks. But, in that world, things were different. And, honestly, he could deal with those two men personally.
He had already faced thousands like them. Still, he did not want to draw attention. Not now. Not in that summer.
All he wanted was to understand how that world worked. He did not even properly know the Muggle world yet.
So he decided to try. Through the eyes of the small rat, watching the two men in the alley on the Muggle side, always attentive to the door of the Leaky Cauldron — believing that Severus was a curious Muggle and that he would not return to Diagon Alley — he expanded his mind.
And advanced.
His consciousness went directly into one of the men.
He tried to invade his mind, feeling his presence go straight into the man's head. Immediately, the man reacted with a sudden pain.
His companion looked around, confused, while the other screamed, clutching his head tightly. "Aaaah!"
Severus felt the resistance. He had never done anything like that before. Invading the mind of a human was nothing compared to the ancient creatures whose minds he had already accessed in his past life — Cannibal was one of them. What was an ancient and gigantic dragon compared to a mere lackey of the dark?
Still... it was an entirely different field.
But he was there, trying. Severus even closed the book he had been reading, focusing completely on it, while the man's companion tried to understand what was happening, shouting at him. The other began to scream as his mind was forced.
"AHH...!" In the next moment, he simply blacked out, collapsing unconscious onto the ground.
Severus did not succeed in fully invading his mind or controlling him, but he still managed to affect him — even while being in a room far from there. That was something practically no one in the wizarding world could do.
He continued watching through the rat as the other man tried to wake his companion, but he had been neutralized without any warning.
"Damn..." the other muttered, before using Apparition and disappearing from there.
In the room, Severus felt satisfied. At least he had removed those two from his path.
He began to organize his things to leave. There was no longer any reason to remain at the Leaky Cauldron, which was expensive and he had limited money. He picked up some backpacks he had bought and stored everything inside them. He did not know if he would find a place to stay in the Muggle world, but he had to take all of them anyway.
He went down the stairs and found Tom still preparing the bar for the day.
"Mr. Tom..." Severus approached.
"Ah, Mr. Snape. I see you're leaving," he said, looking at the backpacks.
"Yes," Severus replied.
He had used transfiguration again to create more suitable clothes, based on the Muggle clothing he knew from his memories.
"And where do you intend to go?" Tom asked, curious. He still distrusted that boy — someone strange who seemed to have run away from home for some reason, but a good boy in his mind.
"I intend to find some job for myself this summer," Severus answered honestly.
"And, from what I can see, it won't be in the wizarding world..." Tom commented, looking at his clothes.
Severus nodded. "Yes."
"If you want..." Tom suggested. "I know some people in Diagon Alley who would need an extra hand this summer..."
Severus gave the man a smile. That was more than he could expect from him. "I appreciate your suggestion, but I still want to go to the Muggle world."
He needed to gain experience in the Muggle world, to better understand that side of reality.
"As you wish..." he said.
But that was not all for Severus, in truth he had plans. Severus pulled out a flyer he had picked up at the pet shop.
"I'm thinking about that as well." He placed the paper on the table. Tom raised an eyebrow.
"Dragons? Are you really thinking about working at the dragon reserve in Scotland?" he asked, incredulous.
"Why not? It doesn't seem like a simple job, but I naturally get along well with dragons, if you want to know," Severus said with a calm smile.
"Boy, to begin with, they won't even accept you. You're underage and you don't have the academic preparation to deal with this kind of situation."
"Well, they don't ask for that," Severus shrugged, while the man rolled his eyes at the strange boy.
"Of course they don't ask, because no one expects a student who hasn't even entered the sixth year at Hogwarts to apply for such a dangerous position. Do you have any idea that you could die there? You're not a magizoologist," Tom mocked.
"It doesn't hurt to try, does it?" Severus simply replied, with a smile.
"Boy, don't try to die. I already said, I can get something for you, something that won't put you at risk of being burned or devoured..." He tried, but upon seeing Severus's look, he immediately fell silent.
The man stood there, staring at Severus, who kept a smile on his face for a second, until Tom sighed. "You're strange... but I like you. I don't know why, but I really like you. Just don't die while whoever is in charge of that position throws you out of the reserve..." he said.
Severus laughed. "I like you too, Tom. See you. If I need to come back again, I already know where to stay."
With those words, Severus began to leave. "Good luck!" he heard Tom say behind him.
If the old Severus had heard something like that — someone saying they liked him or had a good impression of him — he would never have believed it.
"See, you fool? You could have improved your life a lot if you weren't so grumpy and blind," Severus mocked himself as he stepped outside.
He moved forward, but he was aware that some Aurors were watching him, as Tom had said. He had indeed called some to investigate those two men. The Aurors wanted to catch them in the act and were waiting for them to attack Severus to capture them.
Severus knew that this could become a problem upon seeing them with his new eyes, so he had acted in advance, invading the man's mind before he was dragged to the Ministry to testify and answer questions — such as why he had run away from home, among other things.
Now that the two had left, there was no reason for the Aurors to approach him.
He moved on.
He entered the Muggle world, walking through the main streets. Early in the morning, people were going to work, while cars passed honking and traffic filled much of the streets. A world completely different from Cokeworth. Many people walked along the sidewalks, and old and modern buildings completed the scene.
Severus observed everything attentively, absorbing every detail, even making people look at him strangely, but he didn't care. To him, that was a completely new world.
People talking, cars passing, even airplanes crossing the sky.
The modern world was very different — even from Arctic.
Soon, he began looking for job postings around the area. He stopped to buy something to eat and saved it to get through the afternoon.
He went to a phone booth in the center, where there were several flyers posted: plumber needed, electrician, driver, teacher... various types of jobs that clearly did not fit a fifteen-year-old boy who still studied at Hogwarts.
He stopped when he found one in particular. 'Helper needed in a bar, every night. Pub near the square.' Severus read the words on the flyer.
He took a better look at the address and tore the paper off. "Let's go..."
He quickly moved on, trying to orient himself through the streets, even asking a guard for directions at one point. The guard pointed the way, and Severus followed, finding the square and, soon after, the sign with the name of the pub from the advertisement.
He saw several crates being carried inside by some men and approached. Severus saw a man in his forties, bald, with a stern look, but also open.
"Come on, put everything near the fridge!" one of them said, being the man responsible for the bar, as he could tell. The man noticed Severus approaching.
"Excuse me... are you responsible for this advertisement? I'm interested in the job," Severus said.
The man crossed his arms. "Well, we are hiring, yes. We need someone at the bar... but how old are you, boy?" he asked, observing Severus with the backpacks and bags.
"Eighteen years old, sir," Severus replied.
The man narrowed his eyes. "Let me see your ID," he requested.
Even though he was a Hogwarts student, Severus had an identity in the Muggle world because he lived there anyway... He took it from his backpack, touching it and altering the date of birth with his finger and a bit of wandless magic. He quickly handed the man a small card.
"It says here that you are indeed eighteen... all right. But remember: if the police ask anything, you show this and say you're eighteen. I have nothing to do with any of this, understood?" the man said, clearly not believing in the authenticity of the document.
"I understand," Severus nodded.
"Have you ever worked in a bar before?" the man asked.
Severus had never done that. "No, but I can learn," he replied confidently.
The man nodded. It was clearly the boy's first job and, seeing the bags, he had probably run away from home.
It wasn't the first time he had seen something like that. With the hippie culture of the past decade, many young people had started leaving home.
"My name is Ramon Wick, I'm the owner of the place. You'll receive 10 euros per week, you'll work every night at the bar, it only operates from Tuesday to Sunday, it's only closed on Monday night. How long do you intend to stay here?" he asked Severus.
"Until the end of August," Severus replied. "By the way, my name is Severus Snape, Mr. Wick," he said.
"Polite boy, very good. The job is yours. Come with me. I'll show you the bar." He turned to the men carrying the crates.
"Keep putting everything near the fridge. I'll check later."
Then he led Severus inside. The place was large, with several tables and a stage with space for an audience — it indicated that bands would play there every night. Severus's job would be to serve and help at the bar with the drinks.
"There's no point in teaching you now. I'll ask someone else to show you later, closer to opening."
He looked at Severus. "Do you have somewhere to stay until then?"
Severus shook his head.
"I see. All right, there's a place in the back. If you want, you can stay there. There's a bed. But only for today — you can't stay here. You'll have to find another place afterward." He paused.
"You can wait there until the evening... or, if you want to go out, come back at six."
"I'll stay, then," Severus said. He had nothing else to do for now. He would take the opportunity to read his books and visit the Muggle world later, since he wanted to test a few things before continuing his research.
"All right, come with me." The man opened an old door, leading him to a small room with another door at the back. It was a simple space, almost like a tenement — nothing more than a bed and a sink with a mirror.
Severus placed his things there.
"You can stay here until six in the afternoon. I hope you don't need to use the bathroom, if you want to use it, you'll have to go now," the man said, since there wasn't one there.
"No, it's fine," Severus nodded.
"All right. I'll check the drinks and come back at six. Don't try anything, boy. I'm trusting you because you seem to be honest."
Severus nodded again. Even so, he saw the man leaving and locking his own door, then locking the other one as well — clearly still suspicious.
Severus didn't mind. He had some research to do.
He opened the book on the application of magical runes.
