Wuning first shot a glare at Sanchez, who seemed to thrive on chaos, then sat up, leaning against the wall to greet Cook, who was completely stunned.
“Weren’t you supposed to stay in the Treatment Pod overnight?”
Cook’s eyes were fixed on the blanket, as if Garnet was still hiding behind it.
But that couldn’t be—Garnet was so bulky, this bed couldn’t possibly fit him!
Wait, why was this side of the bed empty?
Cook frowned and was about to slap the spot, “Gani…”
“Wait!” Wuning quickly stopped him.
Playing around was one thing, but letting him actually hit their superior wouldn’t be good.
Cook’s expression grew even more shattered upon seeing Bo Yin.
Thankfully, he was wearing a mask.
So only the sudden constriction of his pupils was caught by Wuning.
Bo Yin went to turn on the light, then checked outside Garnet’s room before returning. “He’s asleep.”
“Oh? It seems only Gani is a good person,” Wuning concluded.
Cook reluctantly apologized, “I’m sorry…”
His frustration wasn’t because Wuning had praised Gani, but because even the captain was quietly doing such things.
And Sanchez! He’d even crawled under the covers!
And came out licking his lips—what had that damn bastard been eating under the blanket?!
Shameless!
Wuning sighed, sitting cross-legged and explaining seriously, “I asked the Major General to stay with me.”
“First, I really dislike being disturbed while sleeping, and there was a chance you might sneak in during the night—which, as it turns out, you did—so I wanted someone to deter you.”
“Second, I just realized I’m a little afraid of sleeping alone. The past few nights, the Major General has been sleeping nearby, so I can’t do without him for now.”
“That’s all. Now, could you both go back and rest?”
Sanchez grew slightly serious. “Afraid? You don’t like it here?”
“It’s fine. I wouldn’t say I like or dislike it—it’s just going to take some time to adjust,” Wuning explained.
Bo Yin pulled open the door, silently ordering the two to leave.
Cook slowly got up, glancing at the girl. “Don’t be angry with me.”
“I’m not angry,” Wuning smiled at him.
There really was no need to be angry.
Her emotions were quite stable, except when she couldn’t control her physiological reactions, like the fear of facing death.
Sanchez hooked a strand of Wuning’s hair, sighed softly but said nothing, then deftly rolled off the bed and left.
The room returned to quiet. Wuning flopped onto the bed and stretched. “Now I can finally sleep properly.”
“Thank you, Major General.”
Bo Yin stood by the door. “Do you still need me tonight?”
“I’m not sure,” Wuning said bluntly, turning her face to look at him.
Bo Yin closed the door, blocking the two persistent peepers outside. “Then let’s test for certainty.”
Wuning laughed, lay down, and closed her eyes.
Perhaps she was truly tired from the commotion, perhaps the past few nights of Bo Yin keeping watch nearby had become a habit, or perhaps it was the sense of security the man exuded.
In any case, once she relaxed, she quickly fell asleep.
Bo Yin sat by the bed, his gaze calm and light, as if resting weightlessly on the girl’s sleeping face.
His heartbeat actively tried to sync with the rhythm of her breathing.
But it never quite matched.
Bo Yin pressed a hand to his chest—it was pounding fiercely now, as if pumping out magma instead of blood.
But tonight was undoubtedly satisfying and gratifying for him.
He had done well, so he deserved a reward.
Since the master who was supposed to distribute the reward was now asleep, he had no choice but to take it himself.
Bo Yin’s gaze lingered on Wuning as he raised his hand and removed his mask.
Silver hair, colder and more radiant than moonlight, gave his flawless face an almost divine purity.
The man’s expression was icy, carrying an indifferent detachment toward everything and everyone.
Even though his deep, sculpted features held a touch of Eastern grace, there was none of the humility or warmth typically associated with it.
Bo Yin hadn’t started wearing the mask only after being polluted.
He had done so even during his time in the military, and only a few high-ranking officers had ever seen his face.
No one could have imagined that the famously renowned Bo Yin possessed such a flawlessly handsome face.
Like the moon god, like the sea god, like any image that evokes cold indifference yet still captivates.
No one could resist hoping for a single glance from a god.
Yearning for his gaze to fall upon them with favor.
Bo Yin leaned down unhurriedly, gently pressing his cheek against the girl’s.
He rubbed against her stiffly at first.
After a few attempts, he clearly grew more adept, letting out a low, husky breath as his breathing quickened.
But the man’s self-control was evidently superior to others’.
He immediately straightened up, refastened his mask, and froze all emotion.
Bo Yin lay down on the floor.
Tonight, this same moonlight covered them both, and that was already good enough.
This was only the beginning.
The next day, after realizing what he had missed the night before, Garnet froze for two seconds before bursting into loud, sudden tears.
His ice-blue eyes welled up like crashing waves, filled with disbelief and heartbreak.
“They! They went too far, waaah!”
His already rough throat made his crying sound like an engine starting, wailing and sobbing.
Was it pitiful? A little.
Was it funny? Absolutely!
Wuning held back her laughter several times before going over to comfort poor Gani with a hug, inviting him to join her for the morning training.
Garnet sniffled, completely unable to believe it. “Not just Cook, but Sanchez was there too?”
“Would you feel better if I told you the Major General was also there?” Wuning blinked, reaching up to wipe away Garnet’s tears.
The tall Polluted was even more shocked, his mountain-like frame immediately shrinking as he crouched before Wuning. “Even the Major General?!”
Wuning explained the reason to him. “…Gani was the only one who truly listened to me. Thank you.”
The man was instantly soothed, holding the girl’s hand against his cheek before enthusiastically and cheerfully leading her through the training.
Wuning really wanted to contact the System to ask some questions about strategies, but she couldn’t.
Life at the base was repetitive and monotonous, with daily training and study leaving her too exhausted to even lift a finger.
Bo Yin was notoriously strict when it came to training, and Wuning didn’t want to risk her life, so she never asked to reduce her workload.
Even when her body ached so much she couldn’t move and had to be carried back to her room.
This left her with no time for anything but training, eating, and sleeping.
Sanchez also couldn’t bring himself to ask the girl for mental energy soothing anymore.
Until Eli returned from his mission.
A few days earlier than the half-month Sanchez had mentioned.
Eli stepped off the fighter jet with a cold expression, glanced at Wuning training on the field, and went to find Bo Yin to report on his mission.
But after searching around, he couldn’t find him.
Remembering that he had just fought Sanchez and Cook before leaving on the mission, Eli didn’t want to ask them either.
Garnet wasn’t around either.
Eli stood there for a moment before turning away bored and finding an empty room to settle into.
Wuning watched everything, deep in thought.
She needed the System even more now.
So why is the world still unstable when Bo Yin seems perfectly normal!
Wuning was momentarily distracted, and the gun muzzle ended up pointed at Sanchez.
Sanchez lazily pushed the gun aside. “Careful, if it goes off, you might hurt me.”
“Wasn’t that exactly how we first met?” Wuning snapped back to attention, pressing the gun against Sanchez’s chest.
Because she couldn’t reach his chin.
Even if she could, stretching her arm out would look completely unimpressive!
The man curled his lips into a smile. “Darling, you remember so clearly.”
“Of course, I still think about choking you from time to time.” Wuning put the gun away.
As soon as she lowered it, Sanchez leaned down and offered his neck, his eyes brimming with relaxed, cheerful amusement. “Why didn’t you say so sooner, sweetheart?”
“Best if you almost choke me to death—that way, my wet dreams and nightmares will only have your face in them.”
