Although everything had happened within a dream, it was, after all, the dream of a divine being, something that could, to some extent, affect reality itself.
Her clothes were soaked through with cold sweat. From her eyes trickled faint streams of scarlet and the dried blood had crusted thickly on her lashes, staining her vision a hazy red.
Her limbs felt cold and weak; she lay on the bed for a long while like a corpse, her vacant eyes fixed on the ceiling.
After a few moments, the ceiling she was staring at suddenly… disappeared.
As if bitten clean away by some invisible mouth, a chunk of it was just, gone.
This… this couldn’t be the result of the Narrator devouring his prey, could it?
Luo Shengle stared, dumbfounded, then abruptly snapped to her senses. Dragging her trembling limbs, she forced herself upright.
She slung on her hiking pack in a hurry, dispelled the sleep effect she’d cast on Lin Ye and bolted for the door before he could open his eyes.
Rushing down the corridor, she shouted at the top of her lungs, “Wake up! Everyone, wake up! There’s a fire, get outside, now!”
She wasn’t sure if those whose minds had been warped by the curse would fully recover but she knew most of the aquarium staff didn’t deserve to die. Especially not poor newcomers like Lin Ye.
Within moments, chaos erupted through the dormitory. Doors slammed open, slippers slapped against the floor and frantic voices filled the air.
“What’s happening?”
“Someone said there’s a fire!”
“God, the ceiling’s vanishing into thin air, watch out for falling debris!”
Hearing the commotion behind her, Luo Shengle didn’t look back. She pushed open the main doors of the aquarium and dashed outside.
The moment she crossed the threshold, the Amusement Park of the Gods system appeared before her. The normally sleek, translucent interface had turned blood red, with several enormous exclamation marks flashing across it.
【Warning! Warning! Instance data corrupted. Re-parsing in progress…】
【Parsing complete. The instance has undergone irreversible destruction. Mission parameters, abnormal.】
What did that mean? Would the system invalidate her mission because of the Narrator’s interference?
Luo Shengle froze, anxiety twisting in her gut.
【Mission evaluation in progress…】
【According to the first principle of the Amusement Park: the will of the deity surpasses all.】
【Therefore, the mission was deemed successful. This instance will be permanently sealed.】
The will of the deity surpasses all…
So in the system’s own hierarchy, the Narrator was recognized as a true god?
The being she had been speaking to all this time, was truly a god who possessed a complete divine domain.
Awe and gratitude welled in her heart. She didn’t know why such a mysterious being had chosen to help her but it no longer mattered. She would remember this grace for the rest of her life.
Still… How could she possibly repay Him? Even a little?
Would the Narrator even want more believers?
But someone like her, just a level three player with minor psychic ability, was probably too insignificant to even be noticed.
She thought this with a trace of shame.
The system interface flickered once and then its cold, mechanical voice continued:
【Congratulations. You have cleared the B rank instance Whale Bone Aquarium. Evaluating performance…】
【Exploration rate: 90%
Primary Mission: Survive in the aquarium for three days. (Completed)
Secondary Mission: Soothe the Son of the Tides’ cries and lift the aquarium’s curse. (Completed)】
【Evaluation: Your personal strength is somewhat lacking but your ability to cling to strong allies compensates for it. Praise be to the great Master of Fate!】
【Reward: 1,000 points.
Additional Reward: Special aura, ‘The Gaze of Fate.’ Effect unknown, cannot be unequipped. Active until He withdraws His attention. Good luck.】
【Finally, congratulations on returning to your world.】
As the voice faded, Luo Shengle was pulled into a glowing gate. When she opened her eyes again, she was back inside her apartment.
“Whew… that was close,” she sighed in relief. “Thank goodness for the Narrator’s protection. I got out of that one in one piece.”
Her entire body ached as the tension drained away.
It was nearly noon in the real world now. Setting down her pack, she wiped at the dried blood on her face and trudged toward the bathroom, longing for a hot shower and rest.
Meanwhile, across the hall, Yi Fengchu had just woken up as well, looking unusually refreshed and radiant.
His phone chimed: [How did you sleep?]
“Had a good meal.. ” he answered automatically, the faint aftertaste of seaweed sweetness still lingering on his tongue. Then he coughed lightly and corrected himself, “Ahem, I mean, I slept very well.”
[…]
If the phone had been human, it probably would’ve sighed right then but since it wasn’t, it could only respond with silence.
After his usual routine of washing up, Yi Fengchu intended to check his social messages, only to notice something new on his home screen. In the bottom right corner, there now sat a small glass display case, like a motionless screen pet.
Its transparent panels gleamed under a ring of LED fairy lights, casting warm starlike reflections against the dark wallpaper.
But what caught his attention most was the single “exhibit” within that glass case, a golden serpent’s eye, quietly suspended behind the glass, rotating gently with its surrounding halo rings.
“Huh? What’s this?”
Yi Fengchu rubbed his head, trying hard to recall his dream from the night before.
“All I remember,” he murmured, “is that I had a really good meal… and then everything goes blank after that…”
【Another thing you picked up while sleepwalking,】 the phone’s mechanical voice said and strangely, there was a trace of unmistakable satisfaction mixed into it. 【You’ve finally managed to bring back something useful.】
After that brief remark, the phone explained, 【You can think of it as… your eye. Use this eye to look once more upon a brand new world.】
“When you put it like that, it sounds as if I were blind before,” Yi Fengchu muttered under his breath.
He stood up and walked over to the window, reaching out to pull the curtains aside.
As the curtains slowly opened, the warm noon sunlight poured in through the glass. Yi Fengchu’s expression froze in astonishment. At last, he understood what the phone meant by a “brand new world.”
In his field of vision, looking down from above, every passerby on the streets below was entangled in silver threads. Loop after loop, the threads wrapped tightly around wrists, elbows, necks, ankles… like slender venomous snakes or shackles binding prisoners.
Everyone looked as though they were puppets tugged along by invisible strings, dancing upon a stage. Whether filled with hope or weighed down by exhaustion, all of them were being guided by unseen forces toward predetermined destinations.
As people moved, the silver threads overlapped and separated, weaving together into an intricate, densely layered web. It was dazzling to the eye, almost dizzying to behold.
“This is…”
Yi Fengchu stood there in stunned silence. Sunlight reflected off the center of his dark pupils, stinging his eyes with a faint burn yet he did not blink. He stared fixedly at the scene, his lips moving unconsciously as a whisper escaped, so soft it nearly dissolved into the air.
He realized then that, in the phone’s eyes, his former self truly had been no different from a blind man or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that, in this kind of vision, all people were blindfolded, their hands and feet bound, stumbling in ignorance toward an unknown fog.
The phone’s tone remained calm but Yi Fengchu could keenly sense a hint of pride beneath it. 【These are the threads of fate.】
【They are the ropes that guide all living beings, the venomous serpents coiled around their throats. Things no one can perceive and none can resist.】
“Unperceivable?” Yi Fengchu echoed softly. “But I can see these… ‘threads of fate’ directly.”
The phone answered with certainty, 【That is why we are special.】
“So this is one of the reasons you chose me,” Yi Fengchu said, sounding intrigued. “You’re only making me more curious.”
Though he said this aloud, the stir in his heart lasted only an instant before settling back into calm.
When faced with a mysterious world where forbidden knowledge and danger went hand in hand, Yi Fengchu had always been skilled at restraining his curiosity.
His gaze swept past the small display case in the lower right corner of the screen. He began checking the apps on his phone from the beginning, searching for any abnormalities aside from the display case.
Though the phone was not a technological product that human civilization could normally create, it could perfectly simulate the functions of an ordinary smartphone, network access, calls, camera and more.
Any of the countless apps on the market could be downloaded automatically as long as Yi Fengchu requested them.
Fortunately, the number of apps he used regularly was small, limited to basic needs and social interaction. This made his inspection much simpler.
Before long, among a row of familiar icons, he spotted an unfamiliar app. Its icon depicted a small silver snake twisted into the shape of a sideways infinity symbol, biting its own tail. The app was called 【Familiar Reviews.】
No, why did that name sound so much like a food review platform?
After a brief silence, Yi Fengchu took a deep breath and cautiously tapped it open.
The app’s interface was very minimalistic. The main page used a deep, star filled cosmos as its background, with the ouroboros icon displayed at the center. At the bottom was a task bar with only three buttons: “Familiar Recruitment” “Gods’ Reviews” and “My Familiars.”
Yi Fengchu’s finger paused on the screen.
He recalled some of the divine familiars he had seen in the Amusement Park of the Gods. Most of them were so bizarre in appearance that they exceeded the limits of normal human imagination and aesthetics.
Compared to those grotesque beings, even the screaming fish from his dream, flavored like seaweed and sesame, had looked downright pleasant.
It was difficult for him to imagine what kind of strange creatures might appear under Familiar Recruitment, not to mention the inherent danger such beings might pose.
After hesitating for a long moment, Yi Fengchu decided not to tap into that section for now, worried it might damage his eyesight.
【You wouldn’t be able to open it even if you wanted to.. 】the phone couldn’t resist mocking him. 【That function isn’t available yet.】
“You could’ve told me earlier,” Yi Fengchu snapped back irritably. “You made me hesitate for nothing. Let me guess, I can’t see the gods’ reviews either?”
From a power hierarchy standpoint, both of those functions involved entities that were far too high level for him at the moment.
Sure enough, the phone replied, 【Correct. You don’t have the clearance to share the same network as the gods yet. Go play somewhere else for now.】
“…Don’t get angry, don’t get angry,” Yi Fengchu told himself silently. “If I ruin my mood, wouldn’t that just play right into this sharp tongued phone’s hands?”
After calming himself with a few internal reminders, Yi Fengchu raised the phone again, then lowered it. In the end, he still didn’t fling his long term partner away. Instead, he tapped the last option: “My Familiars.”
The screen instantly filled with a long list of names that seemed to stretch endlessly downward. Each name was accompanied by a frontal photo taken from the shoulders up. Three names, in particular, caught Yi Fengchu’s attention:
Luo Shengle (Shallow Faith), Meng Siyou (No Faith), Wen Sheng (Shallow Faith)…
There were many more below. His memories of them had grown vague but at a glance, they were mostly players who had crossed paths with him in the amusement park.
Yi Fengchu noticed that names marked as “No Faith” were displayed in gray and tapping their photos did nothing.
Only those marked as “Shallow Faith” appeared in green. When he tapped their photos, more detailed personal information and general status appeared.
Even among the believers, the depth of green varied. Yi Fengchu guessed that the color intensity likely reflected the degree of faith, for instance, Luo Shengle probably believed in the “Narrator” more deeply than Wen Sheng.
“I didn’t expect that helping people casually before would earn me a bit of faith,” Yi Fengchu murmured, scrolling down idly. “Even if it’s not much.”
Suddenly, a name in striking gold appeared amid the list, so out of place that he instinctively stopped scrolling.
“Bryce Fable?”
Reading the name aloud, Yi Fengchu raised an eyebrow with interest. “The surname means ‘fabricated’ doesn’t it? Is this really not a fake name?”
Even more noteworthy was the label beside Bryce’s name: “Apostle.”
In the mystic world, an apostle was a messenger who listened to divine revelations and carried out a god’s will. They were typically trusted familiars of deities, tasked with traveling between divine realms and mortal lands, bearing the responsibility of conveying divine intent to both gods and believers.
As such, apostles were reverently referred to by espers as the “mouthpieces of the gods” existences far closer to the divine throne than ordinary familiars, cult leaders or even religious pontiffs.
Yi Fengchu looked at the photo beside Bryce’s name. A blond, red eyed young man smiled gently at the camera.
Aside from his blood red eyes, which were strikingly inhuman in color, Bryce’s appearance was utterly unremarkable. Each facial feature was arranged in the most ordinary way possible, resulting in a face so plain it was instantly forgettable.
As Yi Fengchu shifted his gaze away from the photo, he realized that his impression of Bryce was already fading. The memory of his features slipped away like fine grains of sand washed from a riverbank.
After a short while, Yi Fengchu could only vaguely recall that Bryce was a foreigner.
“Is this one of his ability’s characteristics…?” Yi Fengchu mused with interest as he tapped into Bryce’s profile.
On the left side of the screen, a full body, true to scale model appeared. The miniature figure smiled and bowed politely toward Yi Fengchu.
The downsized blond youth cradled a gleaming lyre in his arms. He wore a tattered gray robe, its hem reaching down to his ankles, worn so badly it had frayed into strips of dull fabric.
As Bryce bowed, those strips swayed and stretched in an unnatural manner. Yi Fengchu stared for a moment before realizing,
These weren’t strips of cloth at all.
They were thin, soft tentacles, extensions of Bryce’s true form.
At that point, Yi Fengchu could be certain: this Apostle Bryce was definitely not a normal human, most likely not human at all.
To the right of the model, Bryce’s personal information appeared:
Name: Bryce Fable
Gender: Formerly male
Age: ?????
Occupation: Bard, Apostle of Fate
Ability: Echoes of the Past (Rank Eight)
Domains: Fate, Time
Special Status: No self awareness; Can Descend.
Rank eight…
Even with Yi Fengchu’s breadth of experience, his brow twitched at the sight of that rank.
Through the phone, he had once made accidental contact with the leader of a hidden cult, a true divine attendant and familiar, whose footsteps spanned countless worlds and instances, guiding followers in the execution of divine will.
Yet even such a figure had been capped at rank eight.
Just what kind of power did Bryce possess?
Suppressing his imagination, Yi Fengchu focused on the final line of the status description and asked, “What does ‘Can Descend’ mean? Does it mean I can summon him into the real world, like Senior Luo summoned me in the instance dream?”
【No. You’ve misunderstood the term ‘Descend’】 the phone replied slowly. 【This doesn’t mean letting him descend, it means letting you descend.】
【Just as many nonhuman beings select suitable vessels and descend into the world through the bodies of devout believers when necessary, I can let you descend into his body.】
Processing the phone’s explanation, Yi Fengchu laughed, finding it absurd. “So what you’re saying is… I have to personally play the role of my own apostle?”
And that method of descent sounded more than a little sinister.
Had Bryce truly existed at some point? What state was he in now? Temporarily unconscious or lost in an eternal slumber?
Wouldn’t it be that the phone had turned Bryce into an empty shell? The thought alone sent a chill creeping up his spine…
Countless questions rose and sank within Yi Fengchu’s mind. Just then, he heard the phone reply: 【…You may understand it that way.】
The phone seemed to sigh, a faint rush of air escaping from a row of ventilation holes. 【After all, our Mr. Narrator is still a bare commander in the early stages of trickery and deception.】
Yi Fengchu fell silent for a moment, then could only try to comfort himself. “Forget it. At least I’ve gained an extraordinarily powerful spare body in reality. Maybe it’ll help me deal with certain dangerous situations… If I think about it that way, it’s actually not bad…”
Previously, the phone’s ability to construct virtual bodies had been severely limited. It could not fabricate a lifelike human out of nothing, only simulate deceased individuals it had once come into contact with, such as “Chu Fu.”
Most of these virtual bodies belonged to players who had unfortunately vanished within the amusement park. They could only move within a limited distance from Yi Fengchu himself and they lacked strong, reliable supernatural abilities.
Bryce, on the other hand, possessing a “forgettable at a glance” trait and power that could not possibly be weak, was perfectly suited to facilitate Yi Fengchu’s movements in the real world.
After some thought, Yi Fengchu cautiously pressed for more details. “Will there be any obvious energy fluctuations at the moment of descent?”
He had no desire to wake up one day surrounded by official operatives of the Ability Management Bureau, shaken awake and arrested beside his bed.
【If another high tier ability user were to suddenly appear, attention would naturally be unavoidable. Even when I constructed ‘Chu Fu’ it was impossible to leave absolutely no energy traces.】
【This is a fundamental law of abilities. As long as something exists, it must leave marks behind.】
【But Bryce himself possesses a rare trait known as ‘Outside Observation.’ Any existence or technology ranked lower than him cannot perceive, observe or record him, unless he actively lifts this state.】
This also meant that even if Yi Fengchu were to roam the world freely under Bryce’s identity, walking in and out of the Ability Management Bureau seven times in broad daylight or openly peeking at their compiled and revised amusement park archives, it would still be nearly impossible for him to be detected…
Seeing the faraway look on Yi Fengchu’s face, the phone issued a warning. “I advise you to behave yourself. The headquarters of the Ability Management Bureau possesses an A rank or higher artifact known as the ‘All Seeing Eye,’ which monitors every corner of the interior twenty four hours a day, without blind spots.”
【Although even if all official operatives swarmed together, they would struggle to deal with the Apostle Bryce under rank suppression, there is no need for us to make enemies without cause.】
“Don’t worry, I understand,” Yi Fengchu replied. “I’m just occasionally curious about what kind of classified information the authorities have managed to collect so far.”
He stood up, pulled the curtains tightly shut, then leaned closer to the phone. “Since we’re here anyway, there’s no better day than today. Let’s try out this descent function right now.”
The phone seemed slightly surprised, stuttering for a moment before confirming, 【So soon?】
“Any new feature you develop is meant for me to use in the end anyway. What’s wrong with testing it early?” Yi Fengchu said casually.
【….Fine.】 the phone responded. 【Please select the descent location.】
“My home, ” Mid sentence, Yi Fengchu abruptly changed his mind. “No, the entrance of the apartment building, first floor.”
【Descent location selected. Loading in progress. Ten, nine, eight…】
The phone’s voice gradually drifted away from Yi Fengchu’s ears. A brief wave of dizziness overtook him, as if the surrounding world had twisted into a blurry spiral, rotating as it pulled away from him.
Before his vision was fully distorted, Yi Fengchu forced himself to stay conscious and turned his head to glance at the wall clock.
On the clock face, the second hand ticked forward, just in time to overlap with the hour and minute hands at the final moment, all three aligning like an iron black spear pointing straight at “12.”
When Yi Fengchu opened his eyes again, a curl of golden hair had already fallen loosely over his shoulder. Sunlight shimmered at the tips like scattered gold dust. The soft, rag like tentacles, tattered strips of what once seemed like cloth, stirred without wind, gently brushing against his ankles.
He opened a pair of blood red eyes.
The pedestrians passing by paid no attention whatsoever to his sudden appearance. Without even sparing him a glance, they hurried past as if nothing were amiss.
At the moment they brushed shoulders, the memories within those passersby were silently flipped through by an invisible force. Every fragment of their past appeared with perfect clarity, unfolding like a film projected onto a massive screen, each detail laid bare.
“Echoes of the Past…” Yi Fengchu felt he was beginning to understand this ability.
Facing the sunlight, the young man, his golden hair more radiant than the blazing sun itself, curved his lips upward, revealing a gentle, tranquil smile.
At this very moment, he had already become the Apostle of Fate, “Bryce.”
