My father did not appear at the doorway alone. He was also holding a large black dog by a leash.

Just as he appeared at the entrance, the corpse demon that had been transformed from Ma Laosan’s wife was charging straight toward him. “Get out of the way!” Grandpa shouted when he saw my father standing there dumbfounded.

But Dad was so frightened that his legs had gone weak. He wanted to run, but they simply refused to obey him.

At that critical moment, the large black dog he was holding suddenly let out a furious bark and lunged straight at the corpse demon. With a leap, it jumped more than two meters into the air and landed directly on top of the corpse demon, but it failed to knock her down.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, the yellow weasels and foxes swarmed forward once again, immediately tearing and biting at her.

However, the corpse demon’s body was incredibly hard, like it was made of bronze and iron. Those animals could not bite through her at all and could only cling to her body like ornaments.

Only the unusually large yellow weasel proved truly effective. It suddenly grabbed the corpse demon by both legs and violently flipped her onto the ground.

“Get inside! Everyone, hide!” Granny Liu shouted again.

She raised the tobacco pipe in her hand high into the air and smashed it viciously against the corpse demon’s head.

Ma Laosan’s wife immediately let out a shrill, agonized howl.

Only then did my father finally come to his senses. He hurriedly turned around and fled from the courtyard entrance.

Grandpa also quickly went inside and entered the bedroom.

My mother and I had already been awakened by the commotion outside. My mother held me tightly in her arms, trembling all over as she listened to the terrifying sounds of ghostly wails and howls outside.

At that time, I understood nothing. I could only hear all sorts of noises coming from outside, the cries of the yellow weasels and foxes, the furious roars of the corpse demon, and, from time to time, the crowing of the roosters and barking of the dog. Everything was a chaotic mess.

When Grandpa entered carrying the somewhat blunt-edged broadsword, Mom was so frightened that she let out a startled cry.

“Xiaojuan, don’t be afraid. Hurry and put the shroud on the child. This is what Granny Liu instructed us to do,” Grandpa reminded her.

After hearing the commotion outside, Mom was already completely panicked. Only then did she remember the shroud. She hurriedly and clumsily began changing my clothes.

The entire plan had been thrown into chaos.

My father had shown up at precisely the wrong time.

The three roosters Granny Liu had told my father to find were mainly intended to scare the corpse demon away.

Roosters generally only crow when dawn is approaching. Evil entities like corpse demons were terrified of light and had to hide somewhere dark as soon as the sun rose. Once exposed to sunlight, a corpse demon would quickly melt into a pool of pus and blood.

When the corpse demon heard the rooster crowing, she assumed that dawn was approaching, which was why she had turned around and fled.

Granny Liu had initially thought that the corpse demon was simply too powerful. As a result, the situation had developed into this completely uncontrollable mess.

This was also partly Granny Liu’s fault. She had failed to clearly explain to my father exactly when he should release the big black dog.

Just as my mother finished putting the shroud on me, a muffled groan suddenly came from outside the courtyard. It sounded like Granny Liu.

Grandpa sensed that something was wrong. He grabbed his broadsword and turned around, intending to go outside and take a look.

At that moment, a huge black shadow suddenly appeared beside the window.

Before anyone could figure out what was happening, there was a loud crack!

A hand covered in long, razor-sharp claws suddenly pierced through the window and reached inside.

Immediately afterward, the hideous face of Ma Laosan’s wife appeared through the opening as well.

She kicked off with both legs and leaped directly into the room.

My mother had always been timid. When she saw Ma Laosan’s wife with that enormous mouth full of vicious fangs, she nearly fainted from fright. At the same time, she let out a hysterical scream.

Grandpa was terrified as well, but he still raised the broadsword in his hands and swung it down at the corpse demon.

The corpse demon had clearly been prepared for Grandpa’s attack. She reached out and suddenly seized the blade. Then she kicked out violently, sending Grandpa flying across the room.

Grandpa let out a muffled groan. Pain made his vision go black, and no matter how hard he tried, he could not get back to his feet.

“Wu Jie… Wu Jie… I’ve come to find you.”

Ma Laosan’s wife let out a sinister chuckle. Her nose twitched slightly, and in the blink of an eye, a trace of confusion appeared on her face.

Because she could no longer find me.

A corpse demon could not see, but it could sense the life force of living people, and it was especially sensitive to my aura.

The reason Granny Liu had made me put on a shroud was because only the dead wore shrouds. The shroud could conceal the life force of a living person.

Before I put it on, she could still sense me. But after entering the room, she could no longer find me.

“Third Sister-in-law… Please, I beg you, spare my son. He’s my only child…”

Tears streamed down Mom’s face from terror, yet she still held me tightly in her arms, desperately shielding me.

The corpse demon’s nose twitched for a long while, but immediately became furious when she could not sense my presence.

She turned around, her pale, ghastly eyes fixing on my mother as she gave a sinister smile.

“Wu Jie, come out quickly… If you don’t come out, I’ll kill your mother.”

As she spoke, the corpse demon’s hands, covered in bluish-black fingernails, suddenly reached toward my mother’s neck.

I was only three years old at the time, still too young to understand anything. Even when faced with such a terrifying corpse demon, I did not know enough to be afraid.

But just as those hands were about to seize my mother’s neck, an incredibly strange scene suddenly unfolded.

Under the faint light of the lamp, a gigantic shadow suddenly appeared inside the room.

It was the shadow of a fox with eight tails.

At that moment, I felt something snap in my mind, and everything went blank.

“Get lost!”

A voice exploded from my mouth like a thunderclap.

It was a woman’s voice.

The instant those words left my lips, a beam of golden light shot out from my body and slammed directly into the corpse demon’s face.

The corpse demon let out a shrill scream and was blasted backward through the window.

As soon as I finished saying that single word, my eyes rolled upward. My entire body convulsed, and I collapsed stiffly into my mother’s arms.

The sudden turn of events frightened my mother terribly. She had absolutely no idea what had just happened.

The corpse demon had turned out to be far more powerful than Granny Liu had imagined. That was why she had instructed Grandpa to release the three roosters.

She had never expected that the corpse demon would indeed be frightened away by the commotion, only for my father to hear the noise in the courtyard and end up blocking the entrance with the large black dog.

The large black dog had been brought specifically to guard the doorway.

Black dogs possessed strong yang energy. In particular, a pure-black dog without a single patch of stray fur was extremely fierce. Even if it could not defeat an evil entity, it would never show the slightest fear.

Granny Liu had prepared for both possibilities.

If they could not defeat the corpse demon, they would release the roosters to frighten her away and then find another way to deal with her.

If they could defeat her but wanted to prevent her from escaping, they would release the large black dog to block her path.
