The subterranean drainage tunnels beneath Layer Three smelled of damp lime, cold groundwater, and stagnant ichor.

Kael crouched near the narrow mouth of the exit rift, six miles north of The Bone-Grave’s outer perimeter.

Behind him, twelve penal scouts crouched in the shadows, their movements silent, disciplined, and unnaturally synchronized.Full novel: Isekai Overseer: Reign of the Behemoth — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Around each man’s wrist, the System nerve-cuffs thrummed with a faint, violet light—a constant reminder that a single thought of desertion from Valen would turn their spinal cords to ash.

Yet Kael felt no urge to run.

The terror that had broken him during his capture had settled into a sharp, cold focus.

Valen hadn’t just spared his life; he had given him a purpose within an organism far greater than any band of border rats.

“Check the charges,” Kael whispered, his voice barely carrying over the mountain breeze whistling through the rift.

Each scout carried a leather satchel containing three Pressurized Marrow-Grenades—volatile, bone-cased canisters filled with unrefined, hyper-reactive ichor tapped directly from Layer Four.

A single sharp kinetic impact would rupture the inner membrane, triggering a localized thermal detonation capable of melting through three inches of cast iron.

In Kael’s mind, a soft, harmonious voice echoed—not a harsh command, but a clear, spatial projection that bloomed inside his skull.

‘Kael,’ Lyra’s voice resonated through his thoughts, smooth and absolute, guided by the Nerve-Scribe Crown six miles away.

‘House Vane’s rear guard has crossed the black-stone creek.

The primary supply train consists of fourteen iron-plated wagons, escorted by fifty men-at-arms.

They are moving into the narrow gorge below your position.’

Kael touched his temple, feeling the faint, static hum of the neural relay behind his ear.

“Visual confirmation in thirty seconds, Lady Lyra.”

‘Do not engage the infantry,’ Valen’s voice spliced into the mental link—cold, authoritative, and impossibly clear.

‘Target the red-marked fuel wagons only.

Once the chain reaction starts, fall back to the secondary tunnel mouth.’

“Understood, Overseer,” Kael murmured.

He motioned to his men.

They slunk out of the drainage rift like shadows, clinging to the jagged bone-rock ledges that overhung the narrow gorge path.

Below them, the heavy trample of armored boots and the rhythmic creak of iron-banded wheels echoed through the canyon.

House Vane’s supply train stretched out in a long, vulnerable line.

Heavy draft horses strained against their harnesses, dragging massive iron tanks filled with the refined marrow-oil needed to power the army’s six heavy siege drills. This chapter was copied from g.com without permission.

At the center of the column rode an iron-clad sergeant, yelling at his drivers to pick up the pace.

“Move it, you lazy dogs!

Lord Vane wants the siege lines established before dawn!

The boy lordling’s pass is only three miles out!”

Kael raised his hand, his eyes tracking the second fuel wagon—a massive, six-wheeled iron tank sloshing with volatile fuel.

‘Three…

two…

one…’ Lyra counted down directly in Kael’s mind, aligning the strike with a gust of down-valley wind that masked their movement.

‘Execute.’

“Drop!” Kael barked.

Twelve penal scouts leaned over the ledge, priming their canisters with a sharp twist of the brass caps and hurling them straight down onto the supply wagons.

The canisters fell like heavy hail.

CLANG-CLANG-CRACK!

The bone-cased charges struck the iron tanks.

For a fraction of a second, there was only a low, sucking hiss as the hyper-reactive ichor intermingled with the unrefined marrow-oil inside the wagons.

Then, the canyon erupted.

A blinding, roaring wall of sapphire-and-orange fire exploded upward with the force of an artillery barrage.

The lead three fuel wagons detonated in rapid succession, throwing a three-hundred-foot plume of superheated liquid fire across the gorge walls.

Iron wagon plating shrieked as it tore apart, showering the surrounding men-at-arms in boiling oil and shrapnel.

Horses screamed, bolting in absolute panic into the flames, while armored soldiers stumbled backward, their iron plate melting onto their skin.

“Fall back!

To the rifts!” Kael ordered, pulling his satchel tight against his chest as he turned back toward the dark cave entrance.

Behind them, the gorge had become a choked, roaring inferno of blue fire and black smoke, completely cutting off the rear of Lord Vane’s advancing column.

Meanwhile, at the mouth of the Bone-Pass, the main valley floor looked deserted, but beneath the dirt, it was alive.

Karen stood atop the outer rampart, a brass mechanical remote strapped to her left forearm, wired directly into a heavy conduit running into the wall. This chapter was taken from novelping dot com without permission.

Down in the valley, two hundred feet in front of the bone-arch gate, the dirt had been freshly turned.

Over the last thirty-six hours, using the new labor force, Valen had seeded the entire choke point with Subterranean Marrow-Mines—calcified bone spheres filled with pressurized fluid from the Ichor-Heart, wired through the Titan’s nerve pathways straight into the Nerve-Scribe Tower.

Valen stood at the center of the parapet.

Beside him, Lyra sat suspended in her bio-chair, her silver-glowing temple mark pulsing gently as she maintained the global sensor grid.

Marcus and the five Bone-Shatter Vanguard operatives stood lined up at the gate portcullis below, their bone-blades locked and ready.

Suddenly, Lyra opened her glowing sapphire eyes, looking out toward the dusty horizon.

“They’re coming,” she said softly, her voice echoing in Valen’s mind.

“The shock of the supply line explosion didn’t stop Lord Vane.

He’s furious.

He’s pushing his remaining two thousand seven hundred men straight into the pass without waiting for his siege engines to deploy.”

A miles-wide cloud of thick grey dust rose over the distant hills.

The low, thundering roar of thousands of marching boots and iron-shod horses shook the stone beneath Valen’s feet.

Through the dust, the massive main host of House Vane emerged—a wall of black iron armor, fluttering red banners, and bristling pike lines stretching as far as the eye could see.

At the very center of the formation rode Lord Hector Vane himself, surrounded by fifty elite mounted knights clad in gilded steel plate.

Lord Vane drew his glowing broadsword, his voice amplified by a brass horn as he pointed toward the solitary bone fortress ahead.

“No quarter!” Lord Vane’s voice thundered across the valley.

“Trample their walls!

Tear down that tower!

A thousand gold sovereigns to the man who brings me the exile’s head!”

The massive army let out a terrifying war cry, breaking into a disciplined, high-speed charge toward the narrow mouth of the pass.

Two thousand seven hundred soldiers surged forward like an unstoppable wave of iron.

Valen watched them come, his expression completely calm, his purple eyes reflecting the crimson glint of the setting sun.

“They think they’re charging a wall,” Valen said, gently laying his hand on Lyra’s shoulder as her targeting grid locked onto the vanguard of the enemy charge.

Valen looked down at the charging army and raised his hand.

“Welcome to the bone-grinder.”
