JAY’s POV

“MUTYA—!”

The voice tore through the bar so loud it snagged every head in our corner.Full novel: JAYFER – The Shadow’s Love — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

My eyes flew wide with pure recognition and snapped toward the sound.

There stood Ci-N and Felix at the very top floor, waving both arms like a pair of hyper-excited golden retrievers who had just spotted their favorite human.

By the time they reached our table they were completely out of breath, chests heaving.

“Jay—!” Ci-N squealed like an overgrown child and crashed into me with a bone-crushing hug.

“You disappeared!”

I hugged him back just as tight and laughed into his shoulder.

“You brat, I didn’t disappear.”

He pulled away only long enough to wave at Rakki.

“Hi, Rakki,” he giggled in an absurdly high pitch.

Rakki rolled her eyes so hard I thought they might stick.

I smacked both of them lightly on the head.

“What the fuck are you two doing here?”

“Oww, Jay, are you even a woman?” Felix whined, rubbing the spot where my hand had landed.

I glared and raised my fist again.

“Okay, okay, stop!” He threw both hands up like a shield.

“Not only us—the whole Section E is here.”

Section E.

Five years.

The last time I saw any of them was at their high-school graduation.

“Section E?” I repeated.

They both nodded, then exchanged one of those knowing looks that always meant trouble.

“How about joining us?” Felix suggested.

“You girls with Section E.”

I glanced at my girls.

Every single one of them was already nodding with suspicious enthusiasm.

I turned back to the boys.

“Okay. Let’s go.”

“Yay—!” they screamed, literally jumping in place.

“LET’S GO—!”

We reached a heavy door at the top of the bar.

Voices spilled out before Felix even touched the handle.

He turned it and the room opened up in front of us—bigger than a college lecture hall, spacious, elegant, expensive as hell.

We stepped inside and the chaos unfolded like a living storm.

I blinked once.

Twice.

Every single one of them was arguing about something.

Drew, Denzel, Blaster and Eman huddled close, whispering with brows slammed together.

Eren, Josh, Kit and Mayo occupied a far corner, right in each other’s throats.

Edrix, Rory and Calix hammered furiously at their laptops, occasionally shoving fries into their mouths without looking.

And then there was the main group—Keifer, Aries, Percy, Yuri and David—quiet, intense, staring into the middle distance like they were solving world hunger.

No one noticed us.

Felix finally had to break the tension himself.

“Guys,” he called, frowning hard at the scene, “why do you all look like you’re preparing for war?”

Nobody even glanced up.

Edrix spoke without lifting his eyes from the screen.

“Don’t disturb, Felix. We’re in the middle of a very important mission.”

Felix shot Ci-N a look.

“What mission? Is there something we don’t know?”

“Felix,” Yuri growled low, still not looking up from his drink, “don’t ask. Just think about it.”

“Uhm.” Ci-N cleared his throat awkwardly.

“Think about what, exactly?”

Mayo groaned like the weight of the universe sat on his shoulders.

“About what game we should play,” he snapped, then dove straight back into arguing with Kit.

I looked at my girls and the two boys beside us in absolute disbelief.

Then all of us lost it—laughing until our stomachs cramped and tears slipped down our cheeks.

“Oh my god,” Rakki wheezed.

“They’re having an intense life-or-death discussion about nothing but a game.”

“Seriously,” Freya added between peals of laughter, “men are too simple.”

That finally caught the entire room’s attention.

Every head snapped up, eyes going wide, but we were still howling.

“Jay—!”

“Mutya—!”

We eventually managed to stop laughing, though a smirk still clung to my face.

“Need some help choosing a game, guys?”

“Damn—!”

“OMG—!”

“Jay,” Aries called out, frowning deeply.

“What are you doing here?”

I pointed over my shoulder at the girls.

“They dragged me here to celebrate my bachelor party.”

Aries’s gaze flicked behind me—then immediately jerked away.

The tips of his ears burned red.

I glanced back and caught the exact same shade blooming across Ella’s cheeks.

My smirk widened. Get faster updates on g.com.

I nudged my brother.

“Kuya, how’s your girlfriend looking? Isn’t she… hot?”

“Shut up, Jay,” he hissed, but he still pulled Ella straight into a hug and tugged her off with him.

When I turned back to the rest of my girls, none of them were standing beside me anymore.

Every last one had already claimed a seat next to her boyfriend.

“Wow.” I narrowed my eyes.

“Did you all just leave me here alone?”

“Babygirl,” Freya said sweetly from her spot beside Edrix, “you will survive.”

“Yes, Jay,” Honey called, already clinging to Percy’s arm.

“Just sit wherever you find a place.”

I scanned the room.

Every seat was taken except one.

The moment my eyes landed on the empty chair my breath hitched softly.

Keifer.

He sat right beside that open seat, looking dangerously handsome in a black shirt with the top two buttons undone.

The open collar showed off the sharp line of his collarbone and the silver chain resting against his chest.

He wasn’t looking at anyone else.

Those dark, possessive eyes—which had nothing to do with the drink in his hand—were locked dead on mine.

I drew a deep breath, walked over, and sat down beside him.

Our shoulders brushed.

Our knees touched.

Neither of us moved apart.

Heat radiated off him in waves.

His free hand rose and settled behind me; warm fingers brushed my bare shoulder and sent a full-body shiver racing down my spine.

I looked around.

Everyone else was deep in conversation, completely oblivious to the thick heat and tension coiling between us.

I wasn’t supposed to feel this.

This was wrong.

But my traitorous heart hammered against my ribs like a caged bird desperate to break free.
