Voices, no, arguments, distant ones.
Those were the first things I heard, but somehow I couldn’t make out what the argument was or what it was about.
What happened?
My head felt fuzzy and the voices did anything but help, it felt like they had been sent deliberately just to get on my nerves.
I raised my arms, reaching for something but they never moved, I could tell because I could still feel it stuck beside my body.
Why do I feel weaker than I usually do after getting pumped with wolfsbane by Alpha Theron?
Why did it feel like those days with him?
My tongue was numb, I couldn’t taste anything, did he catch me?
That would be the only explanation, he caught me back, he must have injected me with another round of Wolfsbane, that would be the first thing he’d do.
It’d explain the weakness too.
My heart raced, where was Cain?
Mika?
Grumpy Stanley?
What happened to them?
Even the kind medic, Bones?
Did Theron kill his way—
”Ari…” a familiar voice called four warily, a voice I never thought I’d hear again.
“Are you awake?” He pressed on.
I felt my body come down just from his voice, I was still here, no one had taken me.
My eyes finally blinked open, a wordless scream tore right through me.
Four pairs of eyes were staring straight at me, but I was quickly drowning in the pool of those familiar silver grey ones and suddenly, it didn’t hurt as much anymore.
“Hey Princess” Mika was the first to speak, her voice carried a tired edge, the tiredness showed in all their eyes. This story is hosted at g.com.
I gave a tight smile, “Water” I croaked, my voice still hoarse.
“Here” Bones handed me one, Mika propped me up while I downed the water in one go.
Cain and Stanley stood rigidly, observing.
Stanley glared fiercely, like he would pounce on me the moment he could, suddenly I wanted to shrink back into the bed and pull the covers over my head.
Some sensation was back to my body, but just enough to barely move.
“How is she doing?
Check on her.” Cain turned to bones, something about his voice sent chills down my spine.
I took in his appearance, eye bags, his hair fell over his face rough and unkept, he looked older than when I had seen him last.
Bones didn’t even bother touching me before speaking, “She’s out of danger for now.
But we have to watch her more closely, the attack could come at any time, anywhere too, I don’t know if it’d become even more frequent, only time will tell.”
”Great, instead of revenge all we got is a charity case and even more trouble.
A fucking burden to baby sit.” A voice hissed cursing under his breath.
No one replied to him, Mika gave me a gentle smile, “Ignore him” she mouthed, brushing my hair to the side.
I couldn’t understand the woman.
One minute she was acting all nice and welcoming, the next she acted mysterious like she knew things no one did and the next she’s mean.
Stick to one personality woman, I screamed internally.
As if she knew what went through my mind she chucked, giving me a knowing smirk, “You’ll get used to it princess.”
”I’m not a princess,” I mumbled.
She chucked, “Whatever you say Princess,”
Perhaps annoyed that he was being ignored, Stanley continued, “Are we now?
Unpaid ones at that” his words carried a venom to them.
Veins bulged on Cain’s face at the words, something ticked at my nerves, something hot, screaming at the disrespect, I moved to stand but Mika beat me to it.
“Whether you admit it or not.
Alpha was right not to have killed him, I know it, you know it, everyone in this room knows it.” She snarled.
Stanley scoffed, “Of course, the lackey gets a say too.”
Mika’s pupils narrowed into slits, “Want to repeat that on the field?” Her voice was oddly calm but the way Stanley’s face ashened told me there was more to this ‘field’
His knuckles whitened from being curled tightly, so much so that I could literally see the veins throbbing on his fist.
“No” the words were strangled.
She snickered, “Good.
I thought as much”
Stanley’s eyes moved from Bones to Cain to me and finally Mika, “She will ruin everything we’ve been working so damn hard for and if anyone else is too scared to say it or even see it, I will and I promise I would die happy taking her down with me, even if it means my death.”
A snarl filled the room followed by hands wrapping itself around his neck, Cain was on him in the blink of an eye, his pupils glowed off and on, his wolf fighting to take over.
“Lay a finger on her and it will be the last thing you or your generation ever touch” the words were not a threat, but a promise.
His eyes widened, realizing what he just said, then lowering his head he forced out the words “Alpha”
”Remember how our families died Stan, you’re not the only one hurting.
Don’t let the anger cloud your judgement, they died in pain, letting him die in that face off would have been fast and painless, he doesn’t deserve that mercy.”
Sigh.
“You need to get your head back in the game” I finally noticed Jax, he approached them from a corner in the room where he stood, his presence barely known.
Getting to them he placed a hand on Cain, “You’ll choke him to death” his voice carried some sort of warning.
As if realizing himself, Cain freed his hand, Stanley’s legs gave out and he slumped to the floor.
His legs shook as he stood with difficulty, he shot me one final glare before leaving.
My eyes remained transfixed on where he stood even after he had gone far, only one question remained.
“Am I ruining your mission?” My voice was so low that I even had difficulty hearing myself.
Cain looked at me, something deep flickering in his gaze.
“You’re perfect.”
