As expected, there’s always something worse than the worst.
Yu Miaomiao tilted her head and asked, “Aren’t you supposed to guide lost souls? Does reincarnation also fall under your responsibility?”
He nodded.
“Receiving them and sending them off—that counts as one performance metric.”
The Soul Ferryman looked dejected. “Now they even require smiling service. The better my attitude, the less they take me seriously.”
Yu Miaomiao felt deep sympathy.
“Why not just quit? I just resigned today!”
“But I studied for over thirty years to get this permanent position…”
Well—
“Then why didn’t you choose reincarnation back then?”
He shrugged. “Being human isn’t all that interesting either.”
He didn’t want to be human, and he didn’t want to work as a ghost either.
“Can you pursue Cultivation?”
The young man stared blankly. “Never heard of it.”
So, no more talking—let’s have a drink.
Yu Miaomiao ordered some grilled skewers and beer, and the two of them drowned their sorrows indoors, eating and drinking.
“Don’t worry, once I die the day after tomorrow, I’ll go straight to reincarnation. I won’t cause you any trouble.”
She imagined her next life. “I hope this time I’ll be reborn into a good family, with parents who won’t divorce and avoid me like the plague.”
The Soul Ferryman picked out a skewer with more meat and handed it to her.
Yu Miaomiao took it, pulled off a piece, and asked while chewing, “Why don’t those people want to reincarnate? Do they all not want to be human anymore?”
“Not exactly. Most of them have someone or something they can’t let go of, so they refuse to leave.”
“Got it. Like that grandma from yesterday, right?”
The Soul Ferryman nodded and gave another example.
“I have a client who’s been dead for over ten days. She insists on waiting until she sees her husband get his comeuppance before she’ll leave.”
“What terrible thing did her husband do?”
“He lied about working overtime, but he was actually fooling around with his mistress every night.”
“The mistress is his colleague.”
“One night, during a heavy rainstorm, the deceased felt sorry for her husband working late without an umbrella, so she went to pick him up. She ended up dying in a car accident.”
“Only after becoming a ghost did she learn that the man had been cheating all along, and the money he’d claimed to lose in business had all gone to the mistress.”
Yu Miaomiao smiled bitterly, feeling helpless. “So why get married at all? Either you get domestic violence or you get cheated on.”
“Not everyone is like that.”
The Soul Ferryman wasn’t sad for the woman; he was more upset for himself.
“If she still refuses to reincarnate in three days, my performance for this month will be zero, and I’ll be fined.”
He was so worried that even the meat skewer in his hand lost its flavor.
Yu Miaomiao asked, “Is her husband about to face retribution?”
“He moved in with his mistress two days ago.”
“See? All that talk about evil being repaid with evil is just nonsense!”
The young man frowned miserably. “Maybe the time hasn’t come yet. But by the time it does, my money will already be deducted…”
Feeling sorry for him, Yu Miaomiao suddenly had an idea.
“How about this? You take care of Maodou for me. I still have two days of Life Span left—I’ll go get revenge for that lady!”
His eyes lit up as he looked at her.
“How do you plan to get revenge?”
Well, she hadn’t thought that far yet.
“Since the mistress is his colleague, if their affair is exposed—won’t he be ruined?”
The Soul Ferryman leaned closer and whispered, “That woman, afraid he’d change his mind, kept all the evidence of his cheating on her phone, including plenty of censored videos!”
Yu Miaomiao looked at him with newfound respect. What a helpful citizen…
“The problem is, how do I get my hands on her phone?”
The young man was afraid she’d give up.
“If all else fails, I’ll steal it!”
That eager look of his made one suspect he had long wanted to do this.
Once the matter was settled, the two put their heads together and made a plan.
Get a phone.
Extract the evidence (easy).
Play it for all the colleagues at the scumbag’s company… a bit tricky.
