Vоlumе 1 Сhaptеr 18: Рооr Еyesight?
Seсrеtary Хiang’s prоbing gаzе shiftеd bасk and fоrth bеtwееn the two оf them. He had аlrеadу undеrstооd thе situatiоn in his hеаrt, but his exрrеssion rеmained cаlm.
Mеng Yuchuan was just аbout tо saу sоmething.
“Miаomiao, аll sеt, lеt’s gо.”
Hu Weijiе, hаving sеttlеd the bill, walkеd ovеr and notiсed Mеng Yuchuan stаnding in front of him.
His fасе registеrеd surprise, and hе immediаtеly greеted pоlitelу, “Соunty Мagistratе Meng, уоu’rе here too.”
Hu Weijie workеd аt the court and nаturаlly recоgnizеd Meng Yuchuan, though Meng Yuchuan might not know him.
Meng Yuchuan gave a faint nod. “Mm, you’re here for a meal too?”
Hu Weijie smiled. “Yes, what a coincidence.”
Shu Miao didn’t want to stay near Meng Yuchuan for too long and urged Hu Weijie to leave.
Hu Weijie smiled politely at Meng Yuchuan. “County Magistrate Meng, we’ll be going first then.”
Meng Yuchuan nodded.
Watching the two leave, his gaze gradually darkened. Secretary Xiang, standing beside him, naturally sensed his superior’s anger.
Shu Miao felt a scorching gaze fixed on her from behind, making her feel as if needles were pricking her all over.
Unconsciously quickening her pace, she and Hu Weijie walked out of the restaurant.
Meng Yuchuan turned and glared at Secretary Xiang, his voice cold as he questioned, “Why is he still here?”
Secretary Xiang trembled in fright, answering nervously, “Magistrate, this… we’re already speeding things up. It should be done by next week.”
As he spoke, his voice grew increasingly timid and softer.
Secretary Xiang lowered his head, stealing a glance at Meng Yuchuan.
Seeing his face as dark as the bottom of a pot, he immediately lowered his head again, afraid the fire would burn him.
“Tell them to hurry up. Such a small matter dragged on for so long—what have they been doing?” Meng Yuchuan snapped.
Secretary Xiang hurriedly nodded in agreement. “Yes, sir.”
Only after leaving the restaurant did Shu Miao relax. Meng Yuchuan had clearly looked displeased when he saw her with Hu Weijie, and there was a hint of anger in his gaze as he looked at her.
She figured it was better not to stay there and irritate him further, so she made a quick escape.
“Miaomiao, it’s still early. How about going to see a movie?” Hu Weijie asked, fastening his seatbelt as he sought her opinion.
Shu Miao thought about it—she had nothing to do in the afternoon anyway, and staying home would be boring—so she agreed.
She went to the cinema with Hu Weijie, completely forgetting about Meng Yuchuan.
After the movie, the two had dinner together, and Hu Weijie drove Shu Miao home.
As soon as Shu Miao entered her home, she grabbed her pajamas and was about to take a shower when her phone rang.
Opening her phone, she saw it was Meng Yuchuan calling, and her expression changed.
Why was he calling her? Everything that needed to be said had already been said. She hesitated, unsure whether to answer.
While she was struggling internally, the ringing suddenly stopped.
Seeing that the call had ended, Shu Miao decided to send him a message later to ask what he wanted.
She was about to put down her phone and take a shower when the ringing started again, making her tense up once more.
The phone kept ringing, as if it wouldn’t stop until she answered.
Clutching her phone, Shu Miao reluctantly answered.
“Hello? County Magistrate Meng?”
“I’m downstairs.” Meng Yuchuan’s deep voice came through the phone.
Shu Miao’s heart tightened. She naturally knew which “downstairs” Meng Yuchuan was referring to.
Biting her lip tightly, she asked, “County Magistrate Meng, what do you need?”
“I have something to discuss. Come downstairs.” His reply was brief and cold.
Shu Miao felt a wave of panic. From his tone, it was clear that Meng Yuchuan was in a very bad mood and quite agitated. If she went downstairs now, wouldn’t she just be delivering herself right to his doorstep? What if Meng Yuchuan decided to take his anger out on her? That would be so unfair.
Besides, it was dark and windy, and the physical disparity between men and women was too great. If something happened, she wouldn’t be able to fight him off.
With that thought, Shu Miao didn’t dare go downstairs at all.
“County Magistrate Meng, it’s getting late. I need to rest.”
“Can we talk about whatever it is tomorrow during the day?”
Meng Yuchuan had lost all patience and left no room for negotiation: “Do you want me to come up and knock on your door, or will you come down?”
Shu Miao’s heart tightened, and a look of panic flashed across her face. “You… how do you know where I live?”
Meng Yuchuan sneered, “So, will you come down, or should I go up?”
Shu Miao was both angry and anxious, and at this moment, she didn’t even care about Meng Yuchuan’s status anymore.
“How do you know which unit I live in? Did you investigate me?”
Meng Yuchuan didn’t answer, which was as good as admitting it.
Shu Miao grew even angrier, her voice rising several notches as she demanded, “What gives you the right to do that? Is being a county magistrate so great?”
Meng Yuchuan suddenly laughed, his voice softening a little. “Be good, I really need to talk to you. Come down first.”
Shu Miao didn’t reply, and the two of them remained locked in a stalemate.
Meng Yuchuan’s voice turned cold again. “I’ll give you one more minute. If you don’t come down, I’ll go up.”
“Let’s see if I can find your place.”
With that, he hung up.
Shu Miao stomped her feet in anger, her face flushed red. “That jerk.”
Reluctantly, she put on her coat and went out.
She believed Meng Yuchuan really had found out where she lived—after all, it would be as easy as pie for him. She didn’t dare let him come upstairs.
When she reached the parking lot, she saw the black car. Meng Yuchuan was sitting inside, wearing a smug smile.
For as long as she had known him, Meng Yuchuan had always given Shu Miao the impression of being proper and serious.
Even when he had “confessed” and been rejected, he had remained composed and steady.
She had never seen him like this before—utterly shameless.
Fuming, she walked over and tapped on the window. Meng Yuchuan rolled it down, still wearing that smug smile.
Shu Miao went straight for the attack. “County Magistrate Meng, may I ask what urgent matter requires you to coerce me into coming downstairs in the middle of the night?”
Her words were dripping with sarcasm.
Seeing her flushed, angry little face, Meng Yuchuan found it somewhat adorable and didn’t mind her tone at all.
“Get in the car first.”
Shu Miao refused. “We can talk like this.”
Meng Yuchuan was just as stubborn. “If you won’t get in the car, then we can go upstairs and talk slowly.”
Shu Miao glared at him. Meng Yuchuan coaxed gently, “Get in first. It’s cold outside, and I won’t keep you long.”
Knowing she couldn’t win, Shu Miao reluctantly got into the car.
“What is it? Can you tell me now?”
Meng Yuchuan didn’t beat around the bush and got straight to the point. “Are you really dating that guy from today?”
Shu Miao turned to stare at him. So he called her downstairs just for this.
Still angry, her tone was naturally sharp, and she deliberately admitted it. “Yes, we’re dating.”
Meng Yuchuan’s smile vanished, his expression darkening as he complained resentfully.
“What’s so great about him? What do I lack compared to him?”
“What kind of taste do you have? Anyone would know how to choose between him and me. Are your eyes not working properly?”
Shu Miao was speechless. Did this man really call her downstairs in the middle of the night just to complain about her poor taste?Really got nothing better to do, huh? Is the county magistrate’s job that idle?
He scoffed, “My taste is my own business. Besides, when it comes to dating and marriage, it’s not just about external conditions. What matters more is a person’s inner qualities and whether they act with integrity.”
“What’s wrong with my qualities? How am I not acting with integrity?” Meng Yuchuan retorted, feeling indignant.
