Shu Мiаo let out а light sсoff, moсking, “Would somеоnе whо асts oреnlу аnd honestlу secretly invеstigаte реорlе behind thеir bасks?”
Meng Yuсhuаn clеared his throаt. “I was just mаking reasonаble аnd effесtive use оf the resourсеs аvаilable tо mе. Sреcial сircumstаnces сall for sрeciаl measures.”
“Тhаt guу doеsn’t hаve that kind of сaраbility.”
“So, hоw about it? Wаnt to rесоnsider bеing with me? I cаn give yоu аnоther chance to choоsе.”
After saying this, hе lоoked at Shu Мiаo with a smug expression, as if he felt quite proud of his unauthorized investigation.
Shu Miao gritted her teeth in frustration at his shameless pride.
She bit back, “You’re abusing your authority, and you have the nerve to say it so confidently.”
Meng Yuchuan didn’t seem to care and changed the subject. “Are you going to break up with him or not?”
Shu Miao was furious, thinking to herself that this man was insane.
Not to mention she and Hu Weijie weren’t even dating yet—even if they were, who did he think he was, trying to control her love life with a single sentence?
She turned her head away, determined to defy him. “No!”
Meng Yuchuan’s expression darkened, and he asked coldly again, “Say that one more time?”
“No!”
Shu Miao lifted her chin, neither submissive nor arrogant, her small face etched with stubbornness.
Meng Yuchuan’s face darkened several shades, his lips pressed tightly together as he stared straight at Shu Miao.
At this point, Shu Miao wasn’t afraid of him either and boldly met his gaze.
After a moment of stalemate, Meng Yuchuan asked quietly, “Are you sure you won’t break up?”
“Yes!” Shu Miao replied without hesitation, decisive and firm.
Meng Yuchuan turned and leaned back in his seat, tapping his fingers rhythmically on the steering wheel.
Seeing him fall silent, Shu Miao wondered what devious plan he was cooking up now.
Thinking about how he had summoned her downstairs late at night with a single phone call, only to spout a bunch of useless nonsense, she lost her patience.
Her tone grew impatient. “If there’s nothing else, I’m going back now.”
This time, Meng Yuchuan didn’t try to stop her. “Go ahead.”
Without a moment’s hesitation, Shu Miao opened the car door and left.
Watching her petite figure walk away without a trace of reluctance, Meng Yuchuan’s anger flared up. Filled with rage and unsure where to direct it, he angrily punched the steering wheel.
Only after entering her home did Shu Miao’s heart gradually calm down. She cursed Meng Yuchuan under her breath, calling him a lunatic.
Even after she told him she had a boyfriend, he still wouldn’t leave her alone, completely disregarding any moral boundaries.
Returning to her room, she angrily called Pei Ran and told her everything.
After listening, Pei Ran clicked her tongue a few times. “A beauty causing trouble, Miao Miao~”
Shu Miao rolled her eyes dramatically. “Why is this guy so free? It’s not like he can’t find other women. Why does he keep bothering me?”
Pei Ran raised an eyebrow and smiled. “Who told you to be so captivating? Our esteemed County Mayor Meng fell for you at first sight and hasn’t been able to forget you since.”
Shu Miao sighed in exasperation. “How shallow, judging people by their looks. Hmph!”
Her disdain for Meng Yuchuan deepened even further.
Pei Ran chuckled helplessly and reminded her, “Listen, no matter what, he’s the county mayor. His status is what it is. No matter how you feel, don’t embarrass him too much.”
“If you really anger him, your job might be at risk.”
Shu Miao naturally understood this. Tonight, she had only lashed out at Meng Yuchuan because she was furious.
Now, thinking back, she felt a bit of fear. What if he held a grudge? After all, a single word from him could determine her livelihood.Pei Ran reminded her again, “When you see him in the future, you should still greet him politely and respectfully.”
Shu Miao knew Pei Ran was considering her best interests and obediently agreed.
On Monday, just before getting off work, Hu Weijie invited Shu Miao to dinner.
Shu Miao thought about it and, since she had nothing else to do, agreed.
The two found a restaurant nearby in the eastern part of the city. When Shu Miao arrived, Hu Weijie was already there.
After ordering, Shu Miao looked at Hu Weijie with confusion. “Do you have something to tell me?”
Hu Weijie took a sip of water and nodded hesitantly.
From the moment she entered the private room, Shu Miao had noticed that Hu Weijie seemed a bit off—his expression was uneasy, his eyes were evasive, and he spoke haltingly, quite different from before.
Guessing he must have something to say and seeing him hesitate, she grew anxious and decided to ask directly.
“If there’s something, just say it.”
Hu Weijie put down his cup, straightened his posture, and spoke slowly, “Miaomiao, there is something I need to say. I…”
Shu Miao suddenly felt a bit flustered, her hands unconsciously tightening under the table.
Could Hu Weijie be about to confess his feelings? She wasn’t ready for a formal relationship yet.
They hadn’t known each other for very long, and Shu Miao felt it was a bit too soon.
If Hu Weijie really confessed, what reason could she give to turn him down?
The more she thought about it, the more worried she became. Her brows unconsciously furrowed, and a trace of panic flashed across her face.
“Miaomiao, I’m being transferred,” Hu Weijie’s gentle, clear voice came from across the table.
Shu Miao was completely taken aback. Her clenched hands relaxed, her expression returned to normal, and she looked at him in confusion.
A bit surprised, she said, “Huh?”
Hu Weijie took a deep breath and repeated, “I’m being transferred to the Provincial High Court. I have to report there next week.”
Shu Miao finally understood.
Hu Weijie had previously worked at the county court, and now he was being transferred to the Provincial High Court. This could be seen as a promotion in disguise.
Regardless of the position, the benefits were certainly better than here, so this was good news for him.
A slight smile appeared at the corner of her mouth. “That’s great news. Congratulations.”
A hint of disappointment flashed in Hu Weijie’s eyes, but after a moment, he forced a smile. “Thank you.”
After a brief silence, he continued, “Actually, before telling you, I was nervous because I wanted to know how you’d react.”
“After spending this time together, Miaomiao, you’re a wonderful girl, and I’ve really enjoyed being with you.”
“I’m truly glad to have met you.”
Seeing his sincerity, Shu Miao also spoke her mind openly.
“You’re also very outstanding, and I’ve enjoyed our time together.”
“Now, seeing your career progress, I’m genuinely happy for you. I’m glad to have met you as a friend.”
“I hope you meet the one meant for you soon.”
The last sentence conveyed a heartfelt wish while also making clear Shu Miao’s feelings toward him.
Hu Weijie naturally understood. In truth, he had already made his choice.
He had noticed Shu Miao’s change in expression earlier—how she immediately relaxed upon realizing he wasn’t confessing.
His expression turned slightly bitter, but then he smiled in acceptance.
Picking up his cup, he spoke and acted with great grace. “Thank you for your blessing. I also hope you meet that person soon.”
Shu Miao smiled gently and raised her cup. “Thank you. Have a smooth journey.”
Their cups clinked in the air. They exchanged a glance and shared a knowing smile.Shu Miao set down her cup. “I’m treating today, so don’t argue with me. Consider it my farewell dinner for you.”
“Once you move to the provincial capital, it’ll be much harder to invite you out for a meal.”
Her tone was light and humorous, instantly easing the awkwardness between them.
Hu Weijie smiled easily and didn’t argue, agreeing to her offer.
“Alright. If you ever need anything in the future, just let me know.”
Shu Miao chuckled. “I definitely won’t hold back.”
Farewells and endings between adults are always dignified and peaceful—and that was exactly how it was between Shu Miao and Hu Weijie.
