“I actually think the name is pretty good.”
Charles stepped in at just the right moment to help Wade out.
“As for the exact reason, you’ll have a chance to see it for yourself eventually.”
“Now, Logan, do you want to stay here?”
“Our school doesn’t belong to any faction, nor will it be assimilated by any organization.
Our only goal is to provide mutants with a good environment.”
Logan hesitated.
“I can’t completely trust you.”
“But my instincts tell me you’re probably telling the truth.”
Charles continued smiling at Logan.
“Where I stay isn’t important.
I’ve been wandering for a long time and I’m used to it.”
“But there’s someone who shouldn’t have to keep living like that.”
Logan looked toward Charles.
“What about that girl named Marie?
Is she okay?”
Marie.
Wade’s eyebrows rose slightly.
That girl was no ordinary character.
Anna Marie.
She would eventually become Rogue, one of the most talented mutants among their kind.
The simplest way to understand her ability was that she could drain another mutant’s powers and life force, then transfer them into herself.
Given enough time, she could potentially acquire the abilities of countless other mutants.
As long as her mind and talent could keep up with her ability, there was no doubt that she possessed enormous potential.
But the Marie of today was still just a frightened young girl who had run away from home because she was afraid of her mysterious powers, only to be found by Wolverine.
“The girl wasn’t injured,” Charles said.
“She’s actually in much better condition than you are.”
“After all, when my students brought the two of you back, you were the only one who was unconscious.”
Logan remained silent for a while.
“I found that girl on the road.”
“I promised I’d take care of her, so I can’t break my word.”
“But she seems terrified of her unknown abilities.”
“I think she should stay here.”
“You should be able to help her, right?”
Charles nodded.
“Helping young people learn to control their abilities is one of the school’s purposes.”
“And what about you?”
“For now, I’ll stay.”
Logan sighed.
“I’ve been wandering for a long time.
I need somewhere to rest and sort out this mess in my head.”
A mess in his head?
A bullet had once passed through Logan’s skull, taking his memories with it.
Although his incredible healing factor had kept him alive even after being shot in the head, the memories destroyed by the bullet had never returned.
Instead, fragments of those broken memories had remained buried deep within his mind.
“If you’re talking about your memories, I think my student can help you with that.”
Charles turned toward Wade.
“Wade, I’m sure you’d be willing to help your new classmate, wouldn’t you?”
“I’m not a student, you know, Professor Charles.”
Wade sighed.
“But I guess this is why you called me here.”
He walked toward Logan.
“What are you going to do?”
“Relax.”
Wade smiled.
“I’m just going to help you recover some of your memories.”
As he spoke, he gently touched a finger to Logan’s head.
The movement appeared incredibly slow to Logan.
Yet somehow, he couldn’t dodge.
His eyes gradually became vacant.
“Man…”
Wade frowned.
“This is one hell of a mess.”
At this moment, Wade’s psychic power had already entered Logan’s mind through his fingertip.
His memories were an absolute disaster.
Countless fragments were tangled together, overlapping and contradicting one another.
Much of this was related to Logan’s mutant abilities.
His immortality and rapid regeneration had allowed him to live for far too long.
He had witnessed everything from the American Civil War all the way to the present day.
No wonder his memories were so chaotic.
“Let me help you reorganize them.”
Wade took a deep breath.
The endless sea of stars that had appeared countless times within his mind emerged once again.
His thoughts shifted.
A single star traveled along his psychic power and entered Logan’s mind.
This was one of Wade’s abilities.
He could give his own stars to other people—even transferring a portion of their power along with them.
And with that…
Everything changed.
The star immediately became the center of Logan’s memories.
Its gravitational force began pulling the scattered fragments together.
The chaotic mass of memories gradually started revolving around it.
What had originally been an incomprehensible mess slowly transformed into an orderly spiral galaxy.
“Done.”
Wade looked at his work with satisfaction.
As long as Logan was given some time, his memories would gradually reconstruct themselves as they revolved around the star, eventually returning to a complete state.
“What…
did you do to me?”
Logan opened his mouth.
He was about to continue speaking when he suddenly stopped.
His mind felt clearer than it had in a very long time.
Fragments of his past were beginning to resurface.
“I just left something good inside your mind.”
“Don’t worry.
It won’t hurt you.”
“Beautiful psychic guidance.”
Charles nodded approvingly.
“You’re almost surpassing me in this area.”
“Perhaps after you’ve had a little more time, we can try to solve Jean’s problem as well.”
Please don’t.
Wade wiped away a bead of cold sweat.
The power hidden inside Jean’s body was the Phoenix Force, a multiversal-level entity.
It was a true godlike existence.
How could something as simple as leaving a psychic seed possibly solve that problem?
If he accidentally disturbed the true Phoenix Force…
People could die.
Jean, however, saw the situation clearly.
She smiled faintly.
“Don’t worry about me.”
“With your help and the Professor’s over the years, I’ve already been feeling much better.”
Wade looked at Jean with a trace of sympathy.
The Phoenix Force residing within her was unimaginably powerful.
Yet Jean had been forced to suppress herself because of the psychic barriers Charles had placed within her mind.
Her power was growing stronger every day.
And before long, it would break through the limits Charles had established.
Once that happened, the backlash waiting for her would be severe.
Charles understood this very well.
Sometimes, he even wondered whether things might have been better if he had never suppressed the Phoenix Force in the first place.
But things had already reached this point.
Removing the psychic seal recklessly could lead to completely unpredictable consequences.
The only thing Charles could do was continue adding stronger and stronger psychic barriers on top of Jean’s increasingly fragile mental seal.
If Wade hadn’t awakened his own psychic abilities over the past few years and carefully helped Jean regulate and guide the power inside her, the situation would probably have been much worse.
“Don’t worry.”
“We’ll find a way to solve this.”
God only knew how Jean had managed to maintain her love for life, as well as her rationality and composure, while living beneath layer after layer of psychic restraints.
“Thank you.”
Jean nodded.
Deep within her eyes, an almost imperceptible glimmer of something else appeared.
