Editor: Henyee Translations After Evelyn left, Kevin finally gave in to his curiosity.
“Grandpa, Dr.
Ashford is incredible.
What’s her story?” Instead of answering directly, Jacob shot him a knowing look.
“When you first saw her, did you wonder how someone so young could possibly be that skilled?” Kevin scratched the back of his neck and nodded.
“Maybe.” Jacob let out a quiet snort.
“That young lady is the surgeon who performed my heart transplant in New York.” Kevin’s eyes nearly popped out of his head.
“What?
She’s that good?” He couldn’t help recalling how calmly Evelyn had administered the injections moments earlier.
“Wait a second.
Isn’t she a specialist in alternative medicine?
How does she also perform heart transplants?” Jacob chuckled.
“That’s the thing about her.
She’s full of surprises.” Kevin was genuinely stunned.
His grandfather rarely praised anyone, let alone with such obvious admiration.
Hearing him speak so highly of Evelyn only deepened Kevin’s respect for the beautiful young doctor.
It was getting late.
After helping his grandfather take his medication, Kevin stayed until Jacob had fallen asleep before quietly leaving the room.
Just then, his phone rang.
Miles.
The moment Kevin answered, Miles demanded, “Why didn’t you show up at Grace’s birthday party tonight?” Miles had only just returned home himself.
After his driver dropped him off, he immediately called Grace.
He had intended to ask how their plan was progressing, only to discover that neither he nor Kevin had attended the party.
More importantly, Evelyn hadn’t shown up.
Which meant the entire scheme had fallen apart.
Grace had sounded especially upset on the phone, her voice trembling as if she were on the verge of tears.
To Miles, the failed plan wasn’t the biggest issue.
Evelyn wasn’t marrying his brother tomorrow, and there would be plenty of opportunities to stop the marriage before it happened.
What truly puzzled him was Kevin’s absence.
After calming Grace down and ending the call, he had immediately dialed Kevin’s number.
As Kevin walked toward his bedroom, he explained, “I was about to leave when Grandpa’s condition suddenly flared up.
I stayed home to take care of him.” Knowing how serious Jacob’s health issues were, Miles immediately asked, “How is he now?” Kevin found himself thinking of Evelyn’s calm, elegant figure.
“He’s doing much better.
An amazing doctor stopped by.
A few injections later, and Grandpa was already improving.” Miles released a breath of relief.
“That’s good to hear.” Then Kevin paused.
“Wait.
You asked why I didn’t go.
Does that mean you skipped the party too?” A dramatic sigh came from the other end.
“Don’t even get me started.
I was on my way to the Ashford house when I finally spotted my dream sister-in-law again.
Then I followed her…
and somehow lost her.” Kevin blinked.
“Your what?
Hold on.
I thought you hated Evelyn.
Since when did she become your dream sister-in-law?” Miles scoffed.
“Please.
I’m not talking about that liar.” The memory resurfaced instantly.
The crash.
The moment he opened his eyes.
That breathtaking face.
The gentle voice that had comforted him while he drifted in and out of consciousness.
“I’m talking about the woman who saved me after the accident.” Just thinking about seeing her earlier that evening made him grin like an idiot.
“She had her hair down today.
We were driving in opposite directions, and when our cars passed each other, I caught a glimpse of her through the window.” His voice grew increasingly animated.
“She was gorgeous.
Absolutely gorgeous.
Even after she drove away, I couldn’t stop thinking about how cool she looked.
If you had seen her, you would understand.
She’s beautiful, fearless, and completely worthy of becoming my future sister-in-law.” The more he talked, the more excited he became.
Anyone listening would think the woman had already married into the Lowell family.
Kevin remained unconvinced.
“That sounds ridiculously exaggerated.
Is she really that amazing?” Thinking of Evelyn, Kevin laughed.
There was even a trace of competitiveness in his voice.
“I doubt your dream sister-in-law can compare to the doctor I met tonight.
She’s kind, intelligent, sophisticated, and unbelievably talented.
A few injections, some medicine, and my grandfather was sleeping peacefully.
And most importantly, she’s stunning.” Miles snorted.
“No way.
The woman I have chosen is definitely prettier.
You are only saying that because you haven’t met enough beautiful women.” Then he added mockingly, “Seriously, Kevin.
Are your standards slipping?” Kevin immediately bristled.
“My standards?
You’re the one with questionable taste.
For all you know, this so-called dream sister-in-law of yours could be an old witch.” Miles nearly exploded.
“Watch your mouth!
Don’t insult my future sister-in-law!” Kevin delivered the killing blow.
“What future sister-in-law?
She doesn’t even know you exist.” Miles instantly choked on his indignation.
The two young men spent the next several minutes arguing over the phone, neither willing to back down.
By the time they hung up, neither had accomplished anything except thoroughly annoying the other.
But none of them bothered how the young woman they both encountered sounded so similar and how Kevin casually ignored the doctor’s name.
Evelyn Ashford.
— Evelyn spent most of the night reviewing Matthias’s medical records and analyzing his condition.
By the time she finally went to sleep, dawn was already approaching.
When she woke up again, it was nearly noon.
Reaching for her phone on the nightstand, she sent Matthias a message.
“Do you have time this afternoon?
Let’s meet and discuss your treatment plan.” At that moment, Matthias was on his way to a press conference.
When he read the message, he stared at the screen for several seconds.
Did this mean surgery was actually possible?
Even after countless specialists had told him there was no hope?
Beneath the lingering uncertainty, a fragile spark of hope quietly began to grow.
He wanted to walk again.
He wanted to live like everyone else.
Lowering his gaze, he typed a reply.
“I’m available.
If it works for you, we can meet anytime.” Seeing the message, Evelyn immediately understood how much this meant to him.
She replied: “Of course” A few moments later, Matthias sent her a list of restaurants.
After scrolling through the options, Evelyn selected a French bistro.
See you later.
After sending the message, she set down her phone, got out of bed, and headed to the bathroom.
Meanwhile, Matthias slipped his phone into his pocket and looked up.
“Turn around,” he instructed the driver.
“We’re going to Milo.” “Yes, sir.” The driver immediately made a U-turn at the next intersection.
The assistant in the front passenger seat turned around, looking concerned.
“Mr.
Lowell, the press conference—” “There are plenty of people handling it,” Matthias said evenly.
“They don’t need me there just to make an appearance.” And it was true.
His presence wasn’t necessary.
He had only planned to attend to give the event a little more publicity and prestige.
