Jiang Wan sat in the taxi and saw Sheng Lianjue’s incoming call.
But before she could answer, her phone automatically shut down.
It seemed he had sent her another message, but she hadn’t had time to see what it was.
“Miss, you still haven’t told me where you’re going.”
Jiang Wan didn’t know which prison her eldest brother had been taken to. She could only go find Sheng Lianjue in person to get a clear answer.
When Jiang Wan said she was going to Shengshi Group, the driver glanced at her through the rearview mirror.
Over forty minutes later, Jiang Wan arrived at Shengshi Group.
As she approached the lobby, she was stopped by the front desk staff. “Miss, only internal employees are allowed upstairs. Do you have an appointment?”
Jiang Wan replied, “I don’t have an appointment. I’m looking for Sheng Lianjue. Could you please call him for me?”
The front desk staff member seemed to have heard something laughable. She said, “Miss, President Sheng is extremely busy and likely doesn’t have time to see you. If you don’t have an appointment, I’m sorry, but we can’t let you go up.”
“I’m his wife. I’m here to discuss divorce matters with him.”
At this statement, the front desk staff member couldn’t help but laugh. “Miss, please don’t joke around. In the past two days alone, seven or eight people have claimed to be Mrs. Sheng. But your reason is quite novel—discussing divorce? We didn’t even know the president was married.”
Another person chimed in, “Exactly!”
“Even if our president were to get married, Mrs. Sheng would be Assistant Jiang. How could it possibly be you?”
Both of them sized up Jiang Wan’s clothing. The fabric looked decent, but since it didn’t bear any recognizable brand, who knew if it was just some cheap market find.
“Miss, if you don’t leave now, I’ll have to ask security to escort you out.”
When Jiang Wan tried to borrow the front desk phone to call Sheng Lianjue, the staff member rolled her eyes at her and called for the security guard at the entrance.
Jiang Wan was quickly dragged out.
The guard was tall and strong, and she couldn’t break free. She also didn’t want to cause a scene at the company entrance.
When Gao Yuan came down from the president’s office to retrieve some documents, he happened to see the person who had already turned to leave at the company entrance.
He recognized that figure at a glance—who else could it be but Jiang Wan!
What was she doing at the company?
Gao Yuan approached the front desk. “Did that woman just come in?”
The front desk staff immediately nodded. “Yes! She claimed to be Mrs. Sheng and insisted on calling the president. I thought she was crazy, so I had security escort her away.”
Gao Yuan stared deeply at the figure walking away before finally withdrawing his gaze.
For her, leaving was the best choice.
The position of “Mrs. Sheng” simply didn’t suit her.
Jiang Wan didn’t know where to go. She could only find a convenience store. Her stomach ached from hunger, so she used the little change she had to buy some food and borrowed a charging cable to recharge her phone.
Once her phone was half-charged, Jiang Wan turned it on and saw the message Sheng Lianjue had sent.
It was Sheng Lianjue, asking her to come to the company to talk.
Just as she was about to reply, her adoptive mother called.
Jiang Wan answered nervously, her voice trembling as she called out, “Mom~”
He Sui yelled at her, “So you still remember I’m your mom? Get back here right now. Your eldest brother is in the hospital.”
“What!” Jiang Wan’s eyes widened in shock. “Which hospital?”After reporting an address, He Sui rushed to the Capital People’s Hospital by taxi without a second thought. Jiang Wan arrived just as the police were leaving.
He Sui was still wearing the same tattered, mud-stained clothes and rain boots, leaving obvious muddy footprints where she stood.
It had been three years since Jiang Wan last saw her adoptive mother.
Upon seeing her, Jiang Wan noticed that her temples had turned gray, yet her eyes still carried a fierce look no matter how you looked at them.
In truth, Jiang Wan knew that her adoptive mother had a sharp tongue but a soft heart.
Jiang Wan’s own temperament was gentle, and tears welled up in her eyes the moment she saw her adoptive mother. “Mom~ Brother! What happened?”
Without a word, He Sui slapped Jiang Wan on the head. “You useless thing, I knew the Jiang family was up to no good. When others cast you aside, didn’t you know to come home? If it weren’t for Lin Qiuhe coming over and making a scene, demanding a divorce from Wangchuan, I wouldn’t even have known you were back.”
“Sister-in-law wants a divorce from Brother?”
Jiang Wan hadn’t expected that her own divorce from Sheng Lianjue would cause her brother to face one misfortune after another, and now even her sister-in-law was pushing for a divorce.
He Sui snorted coldly. “I always knew that woman had ill intentions. She married into the Zong family just for the money. Now that the Zong family is in trouble, she’s fleeing faster than anyone.”
Jiang Wan asked, “What about Brother? How is he doing now?”
