“What exactly did you do in there to escape unharmed?” the twin tailed girl demanded sharply, her voice edged with suspicion.

“I… slept.” His answer came out stiffly, his mind still clouded, as though he were struggling to process everything that had happened. “The doctor only let me sleep.”

The girl with the bun hurried over behind them, disbelief written all over her face.Full novel: My Alternate Personalities Keep Falling in Love With Me [Infinite] — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

“All of us who went into the electrotherapy room never came back the same and you’re telling me all you did was go in there and take a nap?!”

You Li tried his best to explain.

“I hadn’t slept at all last night. By this morning I was exhausted. The doctor only arranged the treatment because I was tired and needed rest. He just wanted me to recover my energy.”

The twin tailed girl blurted out,

“And while he was at it, he used you to get one of our players killed?”

The accusation sounded utterly absurd.

Yet even the girl with the bun, standing nearby, found herself unable to refute it.

After all, even You Li himself could not explain why he alone was being treated differently.

Could it really be that he somehow had a husband inside this instance pulling strings behind the scenes for him?

What a ridiculous thought.

The three of them left the recreation room together.

Without giving him much choice, the two girls pushed You Li’s wheelchair down the corridor toward Fang Zhi’s hospital room.

Fang Zhi was the square faced man.

One of the only six surviving players left in the instance.

You Li gripped the armrests of his wheelchair tightly.

He had no strength to resist.

The girl with the bun spoke more gently, as if trying to reassure him.

“We just want you to take a look at Fang Zhi’s condition. Maybe by comparing it with your earlier memory loss, we can figure out what’s different.”

Then she continued sharing what they had learned.

“We don’t have much of a choice either. The doctor threatened us. He said that if we refuse to cooperate with treatment, we’ll be removed from the psychiatric hospital.”

You Li unconsciously rubbed his fingertips together.

Suddenly, he understood why the doctor had been so impatient with him earlier that morning in the consultation room.

After all, among all the players, he was probably the one who had caused the doctor the most trouble.

Repeatedly refusing treatment.

Repeatedly increasing the doctor’s workload.

The girl with the bun continued angrily,

“The way he looked at us back then, it was like he was looking at a bunch of squeaking rats crawling around in a gutter. It made me furious. He even said this hospital didn’t need patients like us.”

“No one knows what happens if you’re expelled from the hospital,” she added quietly. “Whether it means failing the instance outright or simply disappearing from the dungeon forever.”

“You know how these things work.”

“No one dares gamble with their life.”

The three of them stopped outside Fang Zhi’s room.

Unexpectedly, the doctor was there as well.

He sat beside the bed, calmly recording notes in a medical file with his fountain pen.

When they arrived, he merely glanced at them with detached indifference.

But the moment his eyes landed on You Li, he paused.

Then he spoke.

“Have you finished reading the fairy tale book?”

Only then did You Li realize that the doctor had not been speaking to the two girls standing in front of him.

He had been speaking directly to him.

Momentarily caught off guard, You Li hesitated before answering.

“No. I haven’t finished it yet.”

“There’s still about half left.”

“But the stories at the beginning were really good.”

The doctor’s expression darkened slightly.

“If you haven’t finished it, why did you leave the recreation room?”

His gaze shifted briefly toward the twin tailed girl and the girl with the bun standing beside You Li.

You Li suddenly remembered how much the doctor disliked seeing him spend time with the other players.

His lips pressed together.

A trace of helplessness appeared in his eyes.

He lowered his head and remained silent.

The twin tailed girl glanced back at him.

The look in her eyes urged him forward.

All of them knew You Li was different.

That was precisely why they had chosen to bring him here.

After struggling internally for several moments, You Li finally lowered his gaze and spoke.

“Doctor…”

“I heard that someone developed side effects after undergoing physical therapy.”

“I wanted to come see him.”

The doctor raised an eyebrow.

“Side effects?”

“Who developed side effects?”

You Li turned his head and looked uneasily toward Fang Zhi, who was reclining against the hospital bed.

Fang Zhi stared straight ahead.

His expression was completely blank.

Without even looking at them, he spoke in a flat, emotionless voice.

“Doctor, is my discharge paperwork finished yet?”

“My family is waiting downstairs to take me home.”

The girl with the bun immediately activated a sound isolation item and exclaimed in surprise,

“Discharge?”

“What discharge?”

“Fang Zhi, did you find a way to clear the instance?”

To her shock, Fang Zhi seemed not to hear a single word.

He did not even glance in her direction.

The twin tailed girl’s face grew ugly.

“Stop asking.”

“He’s already become an NPC.”

“The instance has assimilated him.”

“We tested it with an item.”

“Ever since then, he hasn’t been able to hear anything we say.”

You Li looked from the two girls to the doctor and back again.

Finally, he asked the question that had been weighing heavily on his mind.

“Doctor…”

“Didn’t he lose his memory too?”

“Just like I did?”

As he spoke, he clenched his fingertips so hard they nearly hurt.

It felt as though he were waiting for a final verdict.

His breath lodged high in his chest.

He waited anxiously for the answer.

“Memory loss?”

The doctor sounded puzzled.

“I’m the doctor here.”

“How come I don’t know he lost his memory?”

Then he turned toward Fang Zhi.

“Do you remember your name?”

Fang Zhi answered immediately.

“My name is Fang Zhi.”

“I received treatment at Zhoushan Psychiatric Hospital and recovered from my mental illness.”

“My family will be arriving shortly to take me home.”

His voice remained eerily calm.

“I am very grateful to Zhoushan Psychiatric Hospital.”

“And I am very grateful to the doctors and nurses here.”

The girl with the bun shouted,

“That’s impossible!”

“Players don’t have families inside an instance!”

Fang Zhi’s eyes were unnaturally dark.

He looked at her and asked in return,

“What is a player?”

“What is an instance?”

“How could I possibly not have a family?”

The doctor turned back toward You Li.

“You see?”

“He didn’t suffer any side effects.”

“Not only that but his delusions and persecutory paranoia have been completely cured.”

“He can be discharged immediately.”

The doctor’s voice was remarkably gentle.

Too gentle.

So gentle that You Li felt as though an icy, soft bodied serpent had silently coiled itself around his neck.

A chill crawled up from the pit of his stomach.

It surged upward through his body.

Straight into his throat.

You Li covered his mouth and suddenly retched.

The nausea hit him without warning.

He did not understand why he wanted to vomit so badly but his trembling body already knew the answer before his mind could catch up.

Cold sweat dampened his skin.

Darkness crowded the edges of his vision.

The violent churning in his stomach made his eyes sting and water.

The System spoke inside his head.

“Back then, every time your body heard the words ‘transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy,’ it would trigger an extremely severe stress response. Even your body knows how to be afraid. How is it that you still haven’t learned your lesson?”

There was a pause before it continued, sounding as though it had been holding these words in for a very long time.

“You’re unbelievably stupid.”

Its tone dripped with sarcasm.

“The lower the dungeon’s completion progress, the more restrictions are placed on me. I can’t constantly tell you what you should or shouldn’t do.”

“Can’t you grow a brain and think for yourself for once?”

The doctor put away his fountain pen and looked at You Li with concern.

“Have your psychosomatic symptoms worsened again?”

At the same time, the System continued speaking in his mind.

“His system panel has already gone dark. I can’t detect any remaining traces of it.”

“That means his consciousness has been completely erased by the instance.”

The doctor bent down and stepped closer, seemingly intending to comfort him by patting his shoulder and back.

Suddenly, You Li shoved him away.

“Don’t touch me!”

“Don’t touch me!”

The doctor’s expression froze.

The concern vanished instantly.

An icy coldness settled over his face.

The way he looked at You Li resembled an adult staring at an exceptionally disobedient child.

His mood darkened unpredictably.

Seeing this, the girl with the bun nearly broke out into a cold sweat herself.

“Fang Zhi still needs to be discharged, right? Doctor, please continue, continue.”

She forced out an awkward laugh.

Then she quickly turned the wheelchair around and hurried away.

The twin tailed girl immediately followed behind.

You Li remained bent over, one hand covering his mouth as he struggled against the overwhelming nausea.

Only after they had put considerable distance between themselves and the hospital room, between themselves and the doctor, did the urge to vomit gradually subside.

The physiological tears that he had been holding back were finally squeezed from the corners of his eyes.

The girl with the bun looked at him with complicated concern.

“You don’t actually have some kind of mental illness, do you?”

“Your symptoms are way too severe.”

Perhaps trying to make him feel less alone, she began sharing information about herself.

“There was a time when I was almost kidnapped at an amusement park.”

“So when the doctor asked about my fears, I told him I was afraid of clown masks.”

Then she glanced at the twin tailed girl.

“As for her, the thing she talked about happened when she was younger.”

The twin tailed girl remained silent.

After walking for some distance, she suddenly stopped.

Her expression darkened.

“I saw that person again.”

“He just passed the end of the corridor.”

Her voice turned cold.

“We’ve never been able to see his face clearly before.”

“But this time…”

“He was wearing a clown mask.”

Instinctively, You Li pushed himself up slightly against the wheelchair armrests.

Still covering part of his face, he struggled to raise his head and look toward the corridor.

The hallway entrance was completely empty.

There was nothing there.

The twin tailed girl continued.

“I’m certain he isn’t some hallucination created through the doctor’s hypnosis.”

“The way he walks is too casual.”

“He’s familiar with this hospital.”

“And every place where we’ve encountered him has been completely random.”

“It almost feels as though…”

The girl with the bun finished the sentence for her.

“He’s just wandering around the hospital.”

“And we keep accidentally running into him.”

The twin tailed girl frowned.

“Could this hospital have two worlds?”

“A surface world and an inner world?”

You Li was still weak.

When he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper.

“The doctor said…”

“In dreams, we can do anything we want to our imaginary enemies.”

The two girls looked at him in surprise.

Neither had expected him to join the discussion.

You Li lowered his eyes.

Almost unconsciously, he continued.

“He’s like a dream.”

“At first, he was empty.”

“A blank outline.”

“Then little by little, the eight of us filled him in.”

“We made him fuller.”

“More complete.”

“More real.”

His voice remained quiet.

Distracted.

The lingering discomfort from earlier still clung to his expression.

He looked pale and pained.

“The things we fear.”

“The things we hate.”

“The things that terrify us.”

“They’re taking shape.”

“Becoming tangible.”

“And slowly walking out of the dream.”

The corridor seemed strangely silent as he spoke.

“Leaving the world that belongs to him…”

“And entering ours.”

You Li himself did not understand why he was saying these things.

The words seemed to emerge from somewhere beyond his conscious thoughts.

Only afterward did he belatedly feel a chill spreading through the gaps in his bones.

All the hallucinations he had seen.

All the voices he had heard.

All the strange sensations he had experienced.

Had they all originated from this imaginary enemy they had unknowingly created together?

Then why?

Why was that person following him?

Watching him?

Fixating solely on him?

You Li felt cold.

Very cold.

He curled in on himself a little more.

The comfort and warmth he had felt after that morning’s electrotherapy session had completely vanished.

Not a trace remained.

The doctor could no longer provide him with any sense of protection.

And that invisible person,

The one who had always been watching him from places beyond his sight,

Had appeared again.

It felt as though he existed everywhere.

Every direction around You Li seemed to conceal a pair of eyes.

Watching.

Coveting.

Waiting.

Dangerous.

Hidden.

He lowered his head slightly, as though defeated.

“If we’re going by your theory…”

“Then that’s probably what it is.”

The girl with the bun frowned.

“If this dream really is the inner world…”

“Then doesn’t that mean that sooner or later we’ll be dragged into it?”

“And once we’re there, we’ll be completely at the mercy of this imaginary enemy, just like the doctor said?”

The twin tailed girl let out a cold laugh.

“There aren’t many days left.”

“Today is already our fifth day in this instance.”

“And I don’t believe for a second that we’re truly capable of doing anything we want to him.”

The three of them eventually returned to the recreation room.

Because of his limited mobility, You Li usually pushed his wheelchair around by himself at a slow pace.

Occasionally, a nurse would help him.

Today, however, he felt unusually insecure.

At dinner time, he chose to eat in the crowded cafeteria instead of staying elsewhere alone.

A nurse helped bring his meal tray over.

There were many people around.

The hospital housed far more patients than just the handful of players.

People constantly walked past You Li’s table.

The noise of conversation filled the dining hall.

Quietly, he scooped food into his mouth with a spoon.

At some point, someone seemed to sit down beside him carrying a meal tray.

You Li glanced over instinctively.

His head was lowered, so at first he could only see the lower half of the person’s body.

Black suit trousers.

A long white lab coat.

His breathing stopped.

His eyelashes trembled as his gaze slowly moved upward.

Then he saw a pair of hands covered in white gloves.

The person was absentmindedly playing with something.

You Li’s vision blurred.

For a moment he thought he was hallucinating again.

He looked several times before finally realizing that what the person was holding was not a pair of disposable chopsticks.

It was a slender surgical scalpel.

Its blade was smooth.

Sharp.

Deadly.

The person slowly turned his head.

A clown mask stretched into an exaggerated grin across his face.

Behind the mask was a pair of icy eyes.

Eyes filled with amusement.

With malice.

With something wicked and cruel.

In an instant, You Li was dragged back into the deepest terror of his life.

Back to the car accident that had left him unable to walk properly.

The driver in his dreams had possessed those same eyes.

Those eyes were his own.

Familiar.

Yet strangely unfamiliar.

Who had actually been in the accident?

His husband?

Or himself?

Who had been struck and left writhing in unbearable agony?

His husband?

Or himself?

If it had been him…

Then why would he kill himself?

Had he really killed himself?

And now…

Was he preparing to kill him again?

Those eyes were You Li’s nightmare.

His ultimate nightmare.

It felt as though invisible hands had wrapped around his throat.

He could not breathe.

Could not speak.

The terror of death engulfed his entire body.

Then, with the blink of an eye,

The seat beside him was empty.

No one was there.

The cafeteria remained as noisy and crowded as before.

People talked.

People laughed.

People ate.

Only You Li seemed isolated from the rest of the world.

As though he alone had fallen into a frozen abyss.

A very long time passed before he finally sucked in a desperate breath.

Then he frantically searched for a nurse.

The nurse immediately noticed something was wrong with his complexion and rushed over.

“Patient Thirteen?”

“Patient Thirteen?”

“What’s wrong?”

You Li grabbed her arm with both hands.

His lips had turned pale.

“Doctor…”

“The doctor…”

“I need to see the doctor.”

“I saw him again.”

“I saw him again, ”

The panicked words suddenly died in his throat.

Without warning, he remembered the look the doctor had given him earlier that day inside the hospital room.

That terrifyingly cold look.

“I… I…”

He desperately searched for the final lifeline he had left.

Then it was as though something suddenly occurred to him.

His voice became disordered and helpless.

“No.”

“I don’t want to see the doctor anymore.”

“I want to call my family.”

“I want to talk to my family!”

“He said he would come pick me up soon.”

“Why isn’t he here yet?”

“Why isn’t he here yet?”

“Why isn’t he, ”

“Patient Thirteen!” the nurse shouted.

You Li suddenly snapped back to reality from the endless nightmare.

All strength seemed to leave his body at once.

He collapsed limply into his wheelchair, covering his mouth as he dragged in huge, desperate breaths of air. His eyes were red, his voice shaking so badly it sounded as though he might burst into tears at any moment.

“Someone wants to kill me.”

“Nurse… Nurse, someone in this hospital wants to kill me.”

“He’s already killed me once.”

“I want to leave the hospital.”

“Please… please let me talk to my family, okay?”

Ordinarily, when a patient suffered such a severe psychological breakdown, a nurse’s first response should have been to summon the patient’s attending physician immediately.

But You Li seemed to have been abandoned.

No one came to manage his condition.

No one called for the doctor.

The nurse simply pushed his wheelchair directly toward the telephone station on his floor.

You Li’s hands were shaking too violently to dial properly, so the nurse helped him enter the number herself.

The call connected almost immediately.

It was as though the person on the other end had been standing beside a telephone, waiting.

The moment the line opened, it was answered.

You Li suffered from mild hyperventilation syndrome.

He pressed his hand tightly over the lower half of his face, covering both his mouth and nose within a tiny enclosed space.

It was a crude but effective method.

By restricting the amount of oxygen he inhaled, he could force himself to stop taking uncontrollable deep breaths.

A clumsy method.

A pitiful one.

But it worked.

As a result, when his voice emerged through the receiver, it carried a damp, muffled quality.

He breathed rapidly between every sentence.

A faint sob trembled beneath each word.

It sounded as though tears might spill through the gaps between his fingers, run across his cheeks and drip into his open mouth.

The signal quality seemed much better today.

The male voice coming through the receiver was no longer distant and indistinct.

It sounded real.

Closer.

As though the distance between them had somehow shrunk.

Yet logically, they were still separated by nothing more than a telephone line.

“What happened, baby?”

Perhaps because the connection was clearer, his husband’s voice no longer sounded distorted.

Yet You Li couldn’t shake the feeling that something was different.

The voice sounded younger than it had yesterday.

Not by much.

Just enough to make him notice.

You Li struggled to regulate his breathing while forcing himself to speak.

“They… they said you died in a car accident.”

“The hospital told me.”

“The doctor told me.”

“Everyone keeps telling me that.”

“And I lost my memory.”

“They said I lost my memory.”

The man sounded genuinely surprised.

“How could that be?”

“I merely went abroad for a business trip.”

“I called you last night right after getting off the plane.”

He paused.

Then added softly,

“Besides… wasn’t the one who got into a car accident you, darling?”

The lingering trauma from the accident.

The overwhelming terror of death.

Those emotions felt far too real.

That was why You Li had believed he had a husband.

But now it was obvious.

Whether he believed it or not no longer depended on those reasons.

He had to believe.

The man continued,

“Didn’t you enter the psychiatric hospital because the accident left you with severe post traumatic stress symptoms?”

You Li felt dazed.

For some reason, this explanation sounded more real than anything else.

“…Really?”

“That’s why I’m in a psychiatric hospital?”

The man chuckled softly.

His voice was warm, affectionate, teasing.

“Of course.”

“Otherwise, how could I bear to send my precious baby there?”

He paused briefly.

Then his tone darkened with amusement.

“I never expected that hospital to take advantage of your memory loss and lie to you.”

“My poor You Li.”

“You must be terrified right now.”

“I can hear you crying.”

“Don’t be afraid.”

“I’m here.”

“I’ve always been here.”

Hope instantly lit up inside You Li.

“You said you’d come pick me up.”

“When are you coming?”

“When are you taking me home?”

The man deliberately kept him waiting.

Only after a moment did a low laugh sound through the receiver.

“Tonight.”

“I can come tonight.”

The brief pause afterward immediately made You Li’s heart leap into his throat.

“However, baby, you know how this works.”

“I’ll need some compensation.”

His laughter deepened.

“The compensation I’ve deserved for a very long time.”

At last, You Li’s hyperventilation began to settle.

His breathing gradually slowed.

“I have money.”

“I have a lot of money.”

The man sounded thoroughly amused.

“What’s yours is mine.”

“And what’s mine is yours.”

His voice became increasingly coaxing.

As though he wanted to hear a specific answer.

“Baby.”

“What should you call me?”

The taste of salty tears lingered between You Li’s lips.

He shook his head.

Slowly lowering the hand that covered his face.

His eyes remained downcast.

The words refused to leave his mouth.

After a long silence, he finally forced them out awkwardly, as though merely humoring the other person.

“I…”

“I’m yours.”

The man seemed utterly charmed by the answer.

“Good.”

“Wait obediently in your room tonight.”

“Don’t run around.”

At last, You Li felt as though he could finally breathe again.

A huge weight lifted from his chest.

Yet in the very next moment, he blinked strangely.

For the briefest instant, it felt as though someone was standing directly in front of him.

Someone who cherished him.

Someone who adored him.

Someone who gently licked away the tears covering his face.

The hand holding the receiver trembled.

Confused, he stared toward the empty space before him.

There was no one there.

The voice in the receiver spoke again.

“Be good.”

“Goodnight.”

Almost automatically, You Li responded.

“Goodnight.”

Only after the call ended did he suddenly realize something was wrong.

Why had they said goodnight?

Wasn’t he supposed to be discharged tonight?

Why had his husband spoken as though he would still be sleeping in his hospital room?

The nurse pushed him back to his ward.

He waited anxiously.

Again and again, he glanced toward the clock hanging high on the wall.

Time passed minute by minute.

Then hour by hour.

Eventually, it became time for the nightly rounds.

Still, no one came.

The husband who had promised to pick him up never appeared.

Even the doctor who normally visited every night failed to show up.

The anticipation filling You Li’s heart gradually transformed into disappointment.

Yet the room remained quiet.

Peaceful.

Comforting.

Unlike the previous night.

Last night, he had constantly felt as though someone else were sharing the room with him.

Tonight, there was only silence.

He went into the bathroom and took a shower.

Afterward, he changed into clean pajamas.

Slowly, he transferred himself from the wheelchair to the edge of the bed.

Then he sat there.

Waiting.

Frequently glancing toward the door.

He had washed himself thoroughly.

Clean.

Soft.

Sweet smelling.

Like a little wife eagerly waiting for her husband to come home.

Yet no one came.

No one at all.

Eventually, deep into the night, exhaustion won.

His eyelids became too heavy to keep open.

Reluctantly, he switched off the lights and lay down on the hospital bed.

Soon afterward, he fell asleep.

Sometime in the middle of the night,

You Li abruptly woke up.

He had been sleeping soundly.

Nothing had disturbed him.

And yet, for some inexplicable reason, he jolted awake in an instant.

The drowsiness vanished immediately.

His instincts screamed at him.

In the darkness, he saw the door to his room.

It stood partially open.

As though someone had entered.

As though whoever had entered was the very thing that had awakened him.

But hadn’t he closed the door before sleeping?

Or had he forgotten?

Had he been so distracted by waiting for someone to come pick him up that he simply neglected it?

Using the faint light spilling in from the corridor, You Li looked around the room.

There was no one.

Only himself.

Nothing else.

No one else.

After hesitating, he lay back down.

He tried to fall asleep again.

But a faint unease lingered stubbornly in his chest.

No matter what he did, sleep would not return.

The instant he closed his eyes,

Creak.

The bed suddenly seemed to sink slightly.

As though someone had sat down beside him.

You Li’s eyes flew open.

Darkness.

Nothing but darkness.

No one.

Yet he could not shake the feeling that someone had climbed into the bed.

That someone had wrapped their arms around him with a satisfied sigh.

Was he hallucinating again?

Did he truly have a mental illness?

You Li curled himself tightly beneath the blanket.

He didn’t dare move.

He was terrified.

All he could do was force himself to believe that if he fell asleep, everything would be fine when he woke up.

Until the System finally lost its patience.

Its cold voice rang through his mind.

“There’s someone sleeping beside you.”

“You genuinely don’t feel anything?”

You Li’s eyes snapped open.

A chill shot through his body.

He turned toward the space beside him.

Nothing.

Still nothing.

No one was there.

The System sneered.

“He’s practically attached to you already.”

“Are you an idiot?”

You Li hated hearing such vulgar language.

He wanted to argue.

He wanted to insist that he was alone.

That there was no one else in the room.

But the sensation of being watched refused to leave him.

It instantly dragged his thoughts back to the previous night.

The endless torment of sitting awake until dawn.

Last night, he had been too afraid to leave.

Because he had never been certain whether the door was truly unlocked.

Even now, he didn’t understand why he had thought that.

Hospital room doors couldn’t be locked.

Yet somehow, last night, he had felt as though he were trapped.

Imprisoned.

But now the door was visibly ajar.

You Li stared at it from beneath his blanket.

A sliver of corridor light shone through the opening.

He breathed softly.

He didn’t even know why he was holding his breath.

Slowly.

Carefully.

He pushed himself upright.

Every movement was cautious.

Silent.

He groped around until he found the wheelchair beside the bed.

Then he prepared to transfer himself into it.

The next second,

The wheelchair moved.

As though someone had pushed it.

You Li lost his balance immediately.

He crashed from the bed onto the floor.

A cry of pain escaped him.

Tears nearly sprang from his eyes.

Instinct screamed danger.

He didn’t dare turn around.

Didn’t dare look toward the wheelchair that had rolled away into the darkness.

Instead, he swallowed his tears.

Swallowed his cries.

Using his elbows to support himself, he dragged his impaired legs across the floor.

Half crawling.

Half kneeling.

Desperately inching toward the partially open door.

Never in his life had he looked so pitiful.

Tears rolled down his face.

One after another.

Falling onto the cold floor beneath him.

At the exact moment he finally reached the doorway,

The door swung inward.

His fingertips barely brushed the edge.

One second later, it would have crushed his hand.

Then,

Bang.

An unseen gust of wind slammed the door shut.

You Li desperately tried to convince himself it was only the wind.

Only the wind.

Nothing else.

The next instant, something seized his legs.

His nearly crippled legs.

Something grabbed him by the ankles and yanked him backward into the darkness.

You Li clawed desperately at the floor.

His fingers scraped against the ground.

But the force dragging him was overwhelming.

He couldn’t stop it.

He couldn’t resist.

“No!”

“No, !”

His voice cracked into terrified sobs.

He tried to look behind him.

But there was still no one there.

Nothing.

The darkness remained completely empty.

His cries dissolved into incoherent whimpers.

“Who are you?”

“Who are you?!”

“Help me!”

“Help me!”

“Doctor!”

“Doctor!”

Then suddenly, he remembered.

The doctor had never made his rounds tonight.

And in the next instant,

You Li realized with horrifying certainty that the doctor was not coming.

Not tonight.

Not anymore.
