Reyna was both elated and uneasy.

On one hand, she was overjoyed that there was a way for her to find her son without having to worry about the government breathing down her neck.

She didn’t want to leave the country and get her son back only to be prevented from returning to the country or locked up as a criminal.Full novel: Of Regret and Redemption — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

On the other hand, she didn’t like the implications of his words.

He made it sound like he had connections to the underworld.

More importantly, why had Seamus allowed him in on this discussion?

He had just reveal to Brixton that she was from an enemy country.

Wasn’t Seamus worried that Brixton would use this knowledge against them?

“We can’t accept such an offer,” Seamus said.

“But it’s already been over a day since Phoenix has been kidnapped.

The longer you put off rescuing him, the higher the chance you’ll lose the trail and never see him again,” Brixton pointed out.

She bit down on her lip and would have curled the hands resting in her lap into fists if she hadn’t already done so earlier.

Brixton fixed his gaze on Reyna as he asked, “What’s your decision?” Reyna opened her mouth and asked in return, “What do you want in exchange?” There had to be a reason he was offering his help.

She didn’t believe for a second that he was doing it out of the goodness of his heart despite all the gifts he had showered her and her son the past few years.

It was one thing to give gifts, and it was another to go against the government, but she couldn’t figure out what he wanted.

Reyna had nothing to offer.

Could he be targeting the Hurst family?

If that was the case, she couldn’t accept it.

The Hurst family had already done so much for her.

She couldn’t put them in danger because of her.

“I’ll come with you,” he said, causing everyone to stare in disbelief.

Did she hear him right?

Did he say that he was going to come with her to the Kingdom of Goden?

That made no sense.

Why would he want to go with her to an enemy country?

What was the benefit?

“Absolutely not,” Jeanette declared.

“My wife is correct.

One person trying to sneak over the border is already dangerous.

Two would undoubtedly draw attention,” Seamus added.

“That may be, but I have business in the Kingdom of Goden.

Posing as a couple passing through would draw less attention,” Brixton said without batting an eye.

Reyna could scarcely believe what was happening.

It sounded as if he had already planned all this ahead of time like he had been certain she would go along with his plan.

How was he so certain that she would agree with his offer?

“Acting as a couple won’t make the border guards less likely to suspect you’re spies.

As long as you’re from the empire, there’s no way they would let you through,” Waylon said, joining the conversation.

“That’s why we will be using fake identities.

We will be posing as a couple from the Holy State of Haulach,” Brixton said, pulling out an envelope from his clothes and setting it down on the table in front of him.

Reyna hesitantly reached out and opened the envelope.

Her eyes widened at the sight of the fake documents inside before shooting her gaze in his direction.

He remained expressionless, his yellow green eyes showing not a hint of emotion.

If she hadn’t known the papers in her hands were fake, she doubted she would have ever noticed.

They looked so authentic, though that wasn’t saying much given she didn’t have the eye for spotting fakes.

This just made Brixton all the more frightening.

It seemed that he was determined to have the both of them enter the Kingdom of Goden no matter what.

She handed the papers to Jeanette and Seamus, who scanned the documents with a frown on their faces.

Waylon abruptly took one of her free hands and gave it a squeeze.

Realizing he was trying to comfort her, she smiled as she squeezed back.

After the couple finished inspecting the papers, Seamus asked, “If Reyna says no, do you still intend to head to the kingdom?” “Yes.

I will have to simply find someone else to play the role of my wife.

However, I won’t be able to expend any energy looking for Phoenix if that’s what you wish to ask,” Brixton said as the fake papers were returned to him.

Reyna flinched before asking, “If I go with you, what’s the plan?

Do we part ways after we cross the border?

How will I return back to the country?” “Essentially yes.

Once we cross the border, we will go our separate ways and meet at the designated location when we finish our business.

The time limit will be a week,” Brixton said, placing the papers back in his clothes.

She wasn’t sure if a week would be enough time to find Phoenix.

The Kingdom of Goden was a big place.

It wasn’t as if she could go back to the freelancer and ask him to help her when they were going to do something illegal.

“I’m coming with you,” Waylon suddenly declared.

Her jaw nearly dropped as Jeanette snapped, “No, you’re not.” “We can’t just let Reyna look on her own.

She’ll have no one to help her out if she gets into trouble,” Waylon insisted.

It stung to have someone younger than her act like she couldn’t defend herself.

She wasn’t helpless just because she couldn’t use magic.

Reyna knew a little self-defense thanks to the classes Jeanette had encouraged her to take.

“You’re not going, and that’s final,” Seamus declared.

“They’re right.

You shouldn’t come.

You won’t be able to help,” Reyna added, fearing that he would defy his parents and try to follow her to the kingdom.

“I only have papers prepared for me and Reyna,” Brixton said as he crossed his arms.

Waylon scowled and said, “I’m sure you can get one more for me.” “It’ll take time and money.

Can you afford it?” Brixton countered.

Instead of giving an answer, Waylon glared at Brixton, who didn’t bat an eye.

Reyna glanced between them, feeling sick to her stomach.

As she pushed herself to her feet, she said, “Waylon, I appreciate that you want to help, but I can’t accept it.

I’m not going to let you be dragged into this.” “But—” he started, but she ignored him to stare at Brixton.

She took a deep breath before saying, “I accept your offer.”
