Reyna anxiously paced the room, wringing her hands as she kept glancing at the door.

Dark circles had formed underneath her eyes from being unable to sleep.

Even though Seamus had reassured her that he had everything covered and that she just had to wait to hear the good news, she couldn’t stand still.Full novel: Of Regret and Redemption — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

It was her baby that had been kidnapped.

She should be heading back to the kingdom to rescue him right away, but he was right that she wouldn’t be able to rescue him by herself.

Against an unknown force, she didn’t stand a chance even with magic.

When she heard a knock at the door, she snapped her head in its direction.

She rushed forward to open it and nearly crashed into a solid chest.

Reyna stepped back with an apology on her lips when she saw who it was.

Her eyes widened in shock as a familiar man stood before her.

“It’s been a while,” he said without a trace of emotion.

She stared at him in a daze before snapping out of it and asking, “Brixton, what are you doing here?” “I heard your son was in trouble and came as soon as I heard the news,” he said, his expression not shifting in the slightest.

Reyna shifted awkwardly beneath his intimidating gaze, recalling the first time they met.

It had just been a few months after she had given birth to her son, and she had still been recovering when she bumped into him.

She had been so intimidated by his presence that she couldn’t utter a single word and stood there like an idiot.

It was only when her son had cried for her that she had snapped out of it.

Ever since then, he seemed to be fascinated by her son, showing up occasionally to check up on them with helpful gifts for the both of them.

“Did Seamus tell you everything?” she asked hesitantly.

Even though he never showed signs of wanting to hurt her or her son, she never got used to his presence.

In the beginning, she had been so worried that he would find out that they were from an enemy country that she fell ill.

It had taken Seamus reassuring her that she had nothing to worry about and that they were safe before she finally calmed down a little, but she still found him unsettling to be around despite how much of a gentleman he was.

He never pushed boundaries though some of his actions confused her, but her son liked him a lot and treated him like family.

If it weren’t for circumstances, she might have felt something else towards the man.

“Yes, I’m sorry to hear this happened to you and your son.

I’m sure he will be found and returned to you soon,” he said.

She gave him a shaky smile as she fiddled with her hands and said, “Thank you.” Seemingly satisfied with the conversation, he nodded and walked away.

Reyna watched him disappear down the hallway before deciding she couldn’t stay cooped up in her room.

She stepped out and closed the door behind her before heading in the opposite direction as him.

After walking around for a bit, she bumped into Waylon as he was coming up the steps.

“Reyna, there you are.

I was about to get you,” he said, meeting her halfway.

Her heart lurched as she asked, “Is there news about my son?” The expression on his face faltered, making her stomach drop.

“Just come with me,” he said, turning his back on her.

Reyna hurried down the steps after him, and they headed to the drawing room.

She paused at the door for a moment when she saw Brixton again before entering the room.

Taking a seat next to Waylon, she noticed the solemn atmosphere and feared what it meant for her son.

“Reyna, I have some bad news,” Seamus said bluntly.

She tensed, preparing herself for the blow that was about to be sent her way.

“We were able to confirm that he was taken to the Kingdom of Goden,” he said.

Her brows furrowed, wondering why he was bringing that up.

Hadn’t they already confirmed this earlier with the freelancer?

“However, we weren’t able to get more information about it.

As for the other matter we talked about, we were able to find out that there has been a crackdown on individuals from other countries.

There have been unconfirmed rumors that a spy has been caught, so the government is desperate to root out any others,” Seamus said as he folded his hands in front of him.

Reyna felt as if a bucket of ice water had been dumped on her head.

If that was the case, she was in serious danger.

She didn’t know how Seamus and Jeanette had been able to give her a new identity, but she wasn’t sure if it would now pass scrutiny under the current circumstances.

“That means you can’t do anything to draw attention to yourself.

That means staying put,” Seamus said.

She froze before blurting out, “Are you saying I can’t look for my son?” Jeanette hurried over to place a hand on Reyna’s shoulder as she said, “That’s not what we’re saying at all, but the government is definitely keeping an eye out for suspicious individuals.

If you’re caught near the border to the Kingdom of Goden, they will detain you and might label you as a spy.” Reyna’s hand curled into fists as she said, “But Phoenix has already been missing for a whole day now.

I can’t just sit and wait.

Every second is precious.” “We know, but you won’t be able to find your son if you’re captured and sent to prison,” Jeanette pointed out.

Even though Reyna didn’t want to listen, she knew Jeanette was right.

She had thought she had gotten stronger and more independent since leaving the Villegas family, but it turned out in the end that she was still that weak woman from five years ago.

Nothing had changed.

Her lips trembled as she forced back her tears when Brixton abruptly said, “I think I can help.” She stared blankly at him as Seamus asked, “What did you say?” “I said I’ll help.

I have some connections that might help you get Phoenix back without worrying about the government breathing down your backs,” Brixton said.
