“Where are we going?” Reyna asked as the taxi drove down the road.
“We’ll be heading to the closest town which is Osfieldge.
It’s less than twenty miles from the border,” Brixton said, looking down at his phone.
Reyna thought Harlow, the town she hailed from, was closer to the border, but she guessed he was referring to proper routes.
If she remembered correctly, if the two countries weren’t enemies, there would have been a direct route from Apingmo to Osfieldge.
To get to Harlow through the official roads, they would have to go through one more city and town.
“I have heard a little about it.
Can you tell me more about the place?” she asked.
Without looking up from his phone, he said, “It’s in the top ten biggest places in the kingdom boasting about 17,000 people and is connected to the capital.
It is ruled by a very powerful individual that you should be careful not to cross unless you want to lose your head.” Those were things she already knew about and weren’t relevant for their current situation.
She had thought Brixton would share more prudent information so she would know what to be careful of, but she guessed he was worried about saying something wrong in front of the taxi driver.
Speaking of the taxi driver, she glanced at the figure.
The driver didn’t seem to be paying them any mind, listening to music on the car’s radio and humming a tune.
At least one of them seemed to be very happy and oblivious to everything around them.
She wondered how the driver would react if he ever found out that he had just harbored two individuals from the empire without realizing it.
She turned her gaze away to study Brixton.
The man was busy on his phone, probably doing whatever suspicious work he normally did.
Even if she was a tiny bit curious about what he was looking at, she was too afraid to get close and even pressed herself closer to the car door so she wouldn’t see anything she wasn’t supposed to.
She didn’t want to get sucked into something dangerous.
Instead, Reyna took the time to think about how to track her son down.
Brixton promised to give her some support, but she would have to do the heavy lifting and look for him herself.
If it’s really as she expected and the kidnappers targeted him because Phoenix was Grey’s son, then she would have to travel to Harlow to find him.
The kidnappers would be sure to head there to demand the ransom from the Villegas family.
Her hands curled into fists in her lap as she bit down on her cheek.
Her brows furrowed as her face darkened at the thought of her ex-husband and his family.
Reyna couldn’t believe that after five years she would be drawn back into that mess.
Her sister’s child should be around the same age as her son.
She wasn’t sure how to feel about that.
On one hand, it was proof of her ex-husband’s infidelity.
On the other hand, it was still her nephew or niece.
The child was completely innocent.
They couldn’t be blamed for their parents’ actions.
It wasn’t as if they asked to be born, especially to parents with questionable character.
She leaned back in the seat, staring at the roof.
Was it a boy or girl?
Would they take after the father or mother?
Given her sister’s personality, she feared that the child would grow up wrong, but perhaps the Villegas family would make sure the child would be raised properly.
Then again, they hadn’t shown stellar child rearing if Grey could cheat so brazenly during their marriage.
No, she should stop thinking about them.
It was no longer her concern.
Reyna only came back to rescue her son.
Then she would return back to the empire.
She no longer had ties to the kingdom.
Soon the taxi stopped in front of a hotel.
Brixton handed the money to the taxi driver as she got out of the car, marveling at how different it was from Harlow.
Harlow was about more than half the size of Osfieldge and didn’t have walls that surrounded the town.
However, it did have a castle that belonged to the Villegas family.
That castle was the most prominent feature of the town which the Villegas family was proud of.
Brixton walked to her side as the taxi drove away and said, “Let’s head inside.
I’ve already made a reservation.” Reyna had to admit she was a little bit surprised by the information.
Even though she knew that he had been meticulous, ensuring that nothing would go wrong on this trip, she couldn’t imagine how he could prepare all of this without being suspected of being from the empire.
The duo stepped into the hotel and walked to the front desk where Brixton said, “We’ve booked a room here.” “Please provide your details,” the receptionist said.
Once Brixton parroted the fake information, the receptionist found their reservation and said, “I see that you’ve booked a double room.
Here’s your key.
Please enjoy your stay.” At the mention of a double room, Reyna stared at Brixton with wide eyes.
Either he didn’t notice or pretended not to as he accepted the key and guided her to their designated room.
A double room?
Wouldn’t that mean they would have to share a bed?
She hadn’t shared a bed with another person in years if she didn’t count her son.
The last person had been her ex-husband and that had been some time before she left.
Brixton didn’t really expect them to share a bed, right?
When the hotel room door opened, Reyna breathed a sigh of relief at the two beds in the room.
It looked like she had been mistaken about there being only one bed and walked to one of the beds.
As she sat down, she asked, “What now?
Do we part ways here?” “Not yet.
We can’t act too suspicious.
We need to give them time to back off,” he said as he took the other bed.
“But you said we had only a week,” she said.
“Yes, but we don’t need to wait a week.
We just have to put on a convincing act to make them back off in a day,” he said.
She stared dubiously at him as she asked, “How do we do that?”
