Reyna slammed the bedroom door shut and rushed to her closet.
Opening it, she began rummaging through it.
She knew she had to act fast.
She had to leave.
Why stay?
Staying would just be adding more salt to the wound, and that was assuming the Villegas family would even allow it.
It was quite possible that they would kick her to the curb once the divorce was finalized.
Reyna would end up homeless, as she knew her parents would never take her back.
They never did like her, treating her as an accessory to Dolores.
If she didn’t know any better, she would have thought they weren’t blood-related.
Pushing aside the clothes hung on the hangers, she finally spotted her ratty suitcase that she had shoved in the corner.
Reyna pulled it closer and opened it to find her documents.
Well, that was fine with her.
She didn’t need them anyway.
She was a fully grown, pregnant woman who didn’t need to rely on anyone to survive.
She would make it work.
After all, she needed to set an example for her baby.
After making sure she had everything, she closed the suitcase and lifted it.
Her eyes landed on the beautiful clothes hanging in front of her before she turned away.
While she would love to take some with her, she couldn’t.
They were all bought with the Villegas family’s money, and she didn’t want to give them an excuse to hunt her down and punish her.
That was the last thing she needed.
Speaking of which, she had to change.
Her current clothes were also bought by the Villegas family.
With a grimace, she quickly changed back into the old clothes she had worn the first day she had arrived.
Just a simple shirt and pants that had faded from continuous washing.
She placed the clothes she had just worn on the bed when she spotted herself in the mirror.
As she took a moment to stare at herself in the mirror, she felt as if five years hadn’t passed at all.
It seemed only just yesterday that she had arrived at this mansion to be married to Grey.
She had been so nervous that she had thought she would throw up, but Grey had appeared acting like her savior.
He had been so kind and reassuring that she couldn’t help falling in love with him.
Who wouldn’t love a kind and gentle man?
Too bad it turned out to be a lie.
Reyna reached out to touch the mirror and noticed the wedding ring on her finger.
She stared at it for several moments before removing it and placing it on the dresser.
Then she took out her phone and placed it next to her ring.
Reyna gave them one last look before she picked up her suitcase.
This wasn’t the time to be sentimental.
She hadn’t been the one to end this relationship, and she refused to be the victim any longer.
As she stepped out of the room, she scanned the place one last time, engraving the image into her memory.
The moment the door closed, she didn’t hesitate to head for one of the exits on the other end of the mansion.
Fortunately, she didn’t come across anyone.
It seemed that everyone had gathered at the front to congratulate Grey and her sister, leaving the mansion empty.
She supposed that was the only good thing about the two of them getting together.
Reyna didn’t have to worry about anyone stopping her or reporting her actions.
When she pushed the exit door open, she froze at the step and gazed out at the forest.
The wind blew through the trees, causing the leaves to sway.
It was as if the trees were beckoning her to come, their branches waving in her direction.
Reyna glanced down at her feet.
The moment she crossed this step, there was no turning back.
She would never come back to this place.
Just one step, and she would be free.
Despite knowing this, she didn’t move an inch.
Her feet refused to budge, leaving her to stand right at the doorway to her freedom.
Her hand gripped the suitcase handle tighter, the leather digging into her palm and leaving a temporary mark on the skin.
Maybe she was just blowing things out of proportion.
Grey didn’t know about the child growing inside her.
If she told him, maybe he wouldn’t divorce her and things would get better.
All her hardships would be rewarded.
Everyone would finally acknowledge and respect her.
They would finally become a proper family.
The thought brought a smile to her face as she placed a hand on her stomach.
The child was too small to feel any movement, but she swore she felt her child’s heartbeat against her palm as if it were agreeing with her.
As for Dolores, Reyna didn’t know what she wanted to happen.
It wasn’t the child’s fault that their mother was a monster, but Reyna feared that the illegitimate child’s presence would be a threat to her own child.
Once Dolores found out that Reyna was pregnant, Reyna was certain that Dolores would do everything in her power to make her lose the child.
The smile faded from her face as she stared anxiously at her flat stomach.
The thought of what her sister might do to her child made the familiar sensation of bile crawl up her throat.
She couldn’t even protect herself from her sister or anyone else for that matter.
Today was tripping, but tomorrow could be a serious accident leading to a miscarriage.
How was she going to protect her child?
Suddenly, she heard a loud burst of laughter, causing her to look back.
Even though she couldn’t see them, she could already envision the looks on their face, and her expression hardened.
What was she thinking?
Giving herself false hope would only bring more hurt for her and her child.
If not for herself, she should at least do it for her innocent child, who didn’t ask to be brought into a messed-up family.
After taking a deep breath, Reyna crossed the threshold.
There was no sudden flash of light or visible sign to show that she had made a tremendous step, but it felt as if a heavy weight had been lifted from her shoulders, and she smiled.
