Two Bodies, “One” Mind, One Soul

Of Scales and Flesh

A large clump of something cold and slimy lands on Rocky, waking him up. A very much rude awakening.

"Wah!" Rocky shoots up as his eye snaps open, and he immediately grows nauseous with the sudden split vision.

He sees, from the dragon's vision, a pile of slimly wet fish laying in his lap, as Niether looks down at him. And in his vision, he sees Niether standing in front of him, his tail slightly wagging.

Rocky lets out a gag, as he throws his arms to the side, flinging slime off himself. Some burning bile rises in his throat from the being immediately overwhelmed, but he swallows it down.

"Almost threw up?" Niether asks as he sits on his hind legs.

"Yeah, how'd you guess?" Rocky looks up at the purple dragon.

"I almost did too."

Rocky grunts as he stands up, the fish slapping onto the ground. He lets out a disgusted grunt as he wipes slime off his legs. The slime sticks to his hands, and he flicks his hands to the side, some of it flying off.

"Disgusting..." Rocky mutters and looks up at the dragon. "Where'd you get the fish?"

"Well, I got them from the ocean, duh!" Niether sticks his large tongue out, as his tail happily wags.

Rocky looks down at the fish, noting most of them are cod, and a half eaten tuna. His eyes then trail up to Niether, and notices a burn mark on his right leg.

"What's with the burn?" Rocky kneels down to the fish.

"This?" Niether lifts up his right leg. "Oh, a Monstrous Nightmare decided that I needed to be taught a lesson from going in its territory. I decided that it needed to lose a couple horns."

"Sounds like you had fun." Rocky stands up and crosses his arms.

"Oh yeah, I've been up for a few hours, so I decided to fly around and test some things out."

Rocky raises an eyebrow. "And you didn't wake me up?"

"Dude, we haven't slept for more then 7 hours in three years, I figured you deserved it. I myself wanted to test this new body out. While it did come with a lot of already preprogramed stuff, I'm still learning a lot."

"Huh..."

Niether then perks up. "But I did learn more then just my Power Shot!"

Niether opens up his mouth as a purple and blue glow appears. Rocky yelps as he dives down as a beam of fire shoots out from Neither's mouth. It slams into the back wall, causing a small explosion.

Then after a few seconds, the beam dies down. Rocky coughs as he stands up, waving the smoke away. He then turns to the dragon in anger.

"Couldn't you have done that outside!"

"I didn't think of that, I was just too excited to show you. You know the feeling of buying a present, and then having to wait to give it to them? It was the same feeling."

Rocky sighs as he shakes his head. The smoke in the cave clears, and Niether looks to the back wall, and notices a large hole, with something shining inside it.

Both Niether and Rocky hum as they both walk over. They both peer in the newly made whole, and find a pair of objects. One being a iron sword, that has nordic runes engraved in the blade.

Then a weird amethyst looking lens. Rocky hums as he reaches in and picks up the lens and looks it over.

"This is weird..." Rocky mutters as he looks it over.

"Why would someone hid this thing, doesn't exactly look valuable." Niether points out as he leans in close.

Rocky then remembers he has a satchel and looks down to it. He quickly then opens it up, only to find it empty, which disappoints him. But he shoves the lens inside, before reaching in and grabbing the iron sword.

He carefully lifts if out and looks it over. "It's surprisingly very light for a sword."

"Reminds me of the time we used dull swords in the Renaissance Fair sword fight."

Rocky lights up as he laughs. "That was pretty fun." Niether quickly nods in agreement.

Rocky gives the sword a few swings, before twirling it and attaching it to his hip. He then suddenly lets out a yawn and rubs his scared eye, but stops as suddenly the split vision vanishes.

Niehter and Rocky freeze up as they look to each other. Rocky moves his hand away from his missing eye as the split vision returns, before moving it back and the split vision disappears.

"That doesn't make a lick of sense..." Rocky mutters as he moves his hand away.

"Does any of this make sense?" Niether questions him.

"Good point, but now I wonder..."

Niether brings a paw over his missing eye, and their split vision suddenly vanishes. Niether then removes his paw and their split vision returns.

"Neat/Neat." They both say.

"Now!" Niether hops a couple times. "Breakfast!" He motions to the pile of fish.

"I think... I'd rather have something more fresh." Rocky says with a forced smile.

"Seven Fish. Seven Fish is what I caught for you. And you refuse to eat them."

Rocky stares at the dragon for a moment. "...shut up." He walks out of the cave.

Niether trots after him as the human takes a quick dip in the small river that flows off the side of the cliff. The dragon then quickly heads back into the cave, and eats the fish. Rocky then does his best to clean the dragon saliva off his pants, but it doesn't easily come out.

"Oh, come on!" Rocky yells in anger as he tries to wash his pants, while Niether gives a warbled laugh in the background. "SHUT UP!"

Rocky scrubs at his pants, as he hears Niether eat the fish.

"How could you just eat it raw?"

"Well, I don't feel disgusted, which is weird." Niether swallows a fish whole. "I guess this body has some instincts attached to it."

"You're weird..."

Niether crosses his arms in a human like fashion. "Well, from my point of view, you're the weird one."

After an hour, Rocky finds himself on a beach, his pants drying after taking a while to clean them. He's wearing a makeshift eyepatch made out of plant fiber and leaves.

He's poking at a purple and blue campfire in front of him. He hears a loud splash in the ocean, and looks up to see Niether lunging out, several fish tails sticking out of his mouth.

The dragon flies over and drops the fish onto a broken piece of bark next to the human. Then he lays down beside him. Rocky then grabs a large stick beside him, and stabs a fish, before holding it over the fire.

Niether lets out a loud yawn, before he shakes his head. He then rests his head on the sand next to Rocky, watching him cook a fish. His massive frame making the human look tiny.

"You know, why'd I have to be a dragon, why no a dinosaur like the Lythronax."

"Dear Odin, the Lythronax is so cool." Rocky smiles, but notices that Niether staring at him from the corner of his right eye. "What?'

"Dear Odin?" The dragon questions as he lifts his head.

"...Huh, I did say that didn't I?"

One of Niether's ear nubs flicker, and he glances back, seeing a Deadly Nadder starting at the fish he caught. The Dragon lightly taps Rocky with a wing, making him hum in question.

Rocky lifts up his eye patch, and their vision splits again. He sees a orange and black Nadder, peaking out of the forest. It licks its lips as it chitters quietly.

"I think she's hungry." Niether turns to the human.

Rocky lowers his eyepatch, returning his vision to normal. He then stabs his stick in the sand, so the fish continues to cook. Then he stands up and grabs the two other fish, and walks towards the Deadly Nadder.

Niether's pupil goes slit as he watches, but stays still. The Nadder lets out a low growl as the human approaches. It then lets out a loud squawk as its tails spikes shoot up.

Rocky stops and slightly lowers himself. "Hey, hey, calm down. Just, trying to be a nice neighbor. And I don't think I can eat three fish. So, would you like these?"

The Nadder chirps a few times, before stepping onto the beach. Rocky then notices a large gash in its right wing. But then he just focuses on the Nadder herself as he holds out the fish.

She opens up her mouth, and he tosses them in. She then steps back and swallows the fish whole, before letting a chirp out. Rocky then motions to the gash on her right wing.

"What happened to you?"

The Nadder squawks and Rocky glances back to Niether.

"She said she was ambushed by Dragon Hunters, and manages to get away, but not without injury."

"Why are you talking as if the human understands you?" The female Nadder questions.

Rocky turns to the Nadder. "Dragon Hunters?" He hums as he rubs his chin. "I'm assuming they capture or kill dragons..."

"He understood?!" The Nadder hops as she roars in shock. "How?!"

Niether stands up, as he grabs the stick that's holding the nearly burned fish. "You could say its a special bond we have."

The purple dragon walks over, and hands the stick to Rocky. Who smiles and quickly digs into the fish. Niether then sits down beside Rocky, and looks down at the Nadder.

"So Dragon hunters, they capture dragons?"

The female Nadder nods. "And what they can't capture, they kill. They're nothing but evil and trouble! I've... lost a few friends from them. I've never meet a human who hasn't tried to attack me, but this one. He's... strange."

Niether chuckles as he smirks. "Yes, he's a little strange."

Rocky gives him a side glare. "I don't like only being able to hear one side of the conversation."

"Well, I'm Snips." The Nadder greets.

"Niether, and he's Rocky." Niether brings up a paw and slaps Rocky on the back, causing him to yelp and fall over. "...Oops..."

A little while later, Rocky is sitting on Snips back, as he applies a paste to the wound on her wing. Then after he's done, he places several leaves over the wound, before hopping off.

He smiles and turns to the Nadder. "Well, that sound prevent the wound from becoming infected, but just don't move it around, or you could remove the paste."

Snips sniffs the wound, before sneezing to the side. "Ugh, it smells weird and kinds burns."

"That means its working." Niether steps up beside Rocky.

Snips then turns to Rocky and stares at him for a few moments. "A human helping a dragon..." She looks to Niether. "It's weird... I never thought this could happen."

"Well, he's different, but just know, not all humans are bad."

"Yeah, there are plenty of good humans." Rocky holds his hand out towards Snips, but she slightly backs away, and stares at him in with suspicious look. "But you know, there are also plenty of bad ones. But you know, if anyone decides to mess with dragons, just know that I'll mess them up."

Snips stares at him for a few moments, before looking at Niether. Niether nods as he shifts a little. Snips then leans forward and let's Rocky pat her chin.

Rocky chuckles as he scratches her jaw a few times. "Not gonna lie, this is pretty cool."

Rocky continues to scratch Snips on the chin, before ushing both hands to scratch away, Snips starts to grumble and purr as her tail sways a little. Niether rolls his eyes in the background.

After a few minutes, the human and dragon watch as Snips heads deeper into the forest. Rocky then hops onto Niether's back as he starts to walk off. Rocky looks up as a few Gronckles fly over head. He then looks down at the sword on his waist.

"You know, even though I don't like dragons, I don't think I could really hurt one of them. Not with out justification of course."

"I don't want to fight other dragons either, but if they attack either me or you, they're gonna be in a world of pain." Niether states as he trots at a brisk pace, passing a few Terrible Terrors chasing each other.

"This island does seem to be full of life, but we've barely even encounter some dragons." Rocky lays on Niether's back, but quickly sits up as some scales boke him in the back.

"Have you seen me, I'm big, and my fire seem pretty powerful."

"Oh, we should test your limits, just so we can get an idea of how can fight!"

Niether stops and glances at Rocky. "I was just thinking the same thing."

"Of course you were, we're literally the same person."

Niether hums as he continues walking. "Now that I think of it, do we share a mind, or are our minds split. I mean we can't hear each other thinking, but we nearly think the exact same thing, at the same time."

Rocky crosses his legs as he thinks for a moment. "What if it's like Dragon Heart?"

"You mean we're sharing a soul?"

"Yeah, what if our souls we're split in two, and put into two different bodies. So our minds are split, but-"

"We're still exactly the same."

Rocky nods as he runs a hand over Niether's smooth black scales on his neck. "But you know, we have no evidence of this."

The two stay in silence as Niether leads them through the forest. But then Rocky speaks up.

"I honestly probably would've gone crazy if I didn't have you here."

"Honestly, saaaaaame. The whole split vison thing was overwhelming in itself. And being turned into a dragon, sent to another world that used to be fictional, and set in the past. I... probably would've just flown deep into the ocean and never came out."

Rocky stares up to the sky, putting a hand over the eyepatch over his scarred eye.

"Now this has me thinking... will we ever be able to go home?"

"Back to what? Demanding parents who do nothing but control us and berate us. A crappy college life, with a crappy engineering track? An older sister who's the star of the family, a bioengineer. Friends who do nothing but party, and don't care how busy we are? There wasn't really much back there for us."

"There was Dylan." Rocky quietly says as he stares to the sky.

Niether stares at the ground as his pace slows down.

"He'd be jealous of us, living out his fantasy." Rocky sighs as he shakes his head. "Sorry Younger Brother, but looks like I'm stuck with this life now."

Niether sighs as he looks back. "I guess we can try and look for a way back, but would that even work. Would we become one person? Would we go back the way we are now. But who's to say this isn't a dream? What if we drank so hard, we put ourselves into a coma, and this is all just a coma induced dream?"

Rocky rubs his temples as he groans. "Then this is one messed up dream, man."

They continue on through the forest, but suddenly something appears out of thing air as it clutches to the side of a tree. A large green dragon. They have teeth protruding out their lip from their lower jaw and yellow eyes. They possess a pair of horns that protrude from the back of their heads, a single horn on their nose, and a pair of antennae with leaf-like lobes. It has spines on its back that are shaped like a leaf. It has green wings with yellow edges.

The dragon watches the two trot off, before suddenly going invisible and following after them.

They finally reach the area they woke up in, and Rocky hops off the dragons back, doing a few stretches. He looks up to the sky, seeing the sun directly above them.

Rocky then puts his hands on his hips and turns to Niether with a smile. "So, let's get to work."

Hours pass and the setting sun hangs over the Island. Smoke rises from deep in the middle of the island.

Rocky uses a stick to write in the dirt. "So you can fire 6 Power Shots at max, before running out. Or you can use 3 Power Beams."

He looks back at Niether, who smacking his lips as some smoke dribbles from his mouth. The entire area around them is burned away, with a few trees turned to ash, and a couple other still burning.

"Ugh, my mouth tastes horrible." Niether sticks his tongue out with a disgusted look.

Rocky looks back down at his crude drawings and hums in thought. 'I wonder if he can make small, precise shots. Focus Shot...'

"I think we can try the Focus Shot later." Niether calls out, as he shakes himself. "I want to get something to eat."

Rocky hums, before deadpanning. "How'd you-"

"We nearly think the same, duh!" Niether walks over.

"Right..."

Suddenly they both hear the ground shift behind them, and they glance back. Suddenly a Whispering Death shoots out of the ground, and glares at them.

"Some of us are trying to sleep!" The Whispering Death roars, before it breaths fire at them. It's fire consists of high-velocity rings of flame with a steady, solid stream of fire shooting straight down the middle

Rocky yelps as he jumps onto Niether's back, avoiding the fire breath. Niether then takes off to the sky as another fire breath slams into the ground where he was.

Rocky screams in panic as the dragon shoots up to the sky at high speeds. He closes his eye as the wind whips around him, nearly pulling him off. Until they suddenly level out, but Rocky keeps his eye closed as he hugs onto Niether's back tightly.

"Hey... look...."

Rocky opens his eye, and gasps in awe. He sits up as his teal eye shines brightly. They fly right above the clouds, with the setting sun in the distance. The warm glow of the sun brings a calming warm colors of orange and yellow to the clouds.

"Woah..." Rocky mutters in awe.

"It's really beautiful." Niether comments as he stares out to the sun.

The two remain in silence as Niether gently flaps his massive wings a few times.

Rocky then looks down spotting their home island under them. "You know, I think we should call that place Weyr Island."

"Really?" Niether glances back at him.

"Why not?"

Niether looks back forward. "Not saying its bad."

"You implied it." Rocky leans forward on the dragon's neck.

"Nu uh."

Rocky scoffs as he leans back and crosses his arms. The two remain in silence as they enjoy the sunset. Rocky smiles as he feels the warm sun on his face.

"You know, I think I could get used to living here." Rocky speaks up.

"Yeah, I wouldn't exactly mind. Maybe we can find an island with some Vikings to live with." Niether turns slightly and dips a wing into the clouds.

"Who knows, maybe we'll live on Berk with what's his name... Hiccup?"

"Such an odd name/Such an odd name."

The two laugh, before letting out a sigh and staring out to the setting sun once again.
