The detective set the recorder on the small table and turned it on.

Maya sat on the hospital bed with the monitor still strapped to her stomach.

Her father stayed near the window.

Her mother sat in the chair like none of this could touch her.

“Start from the beginning,” the detective said.

“Everything about the clinic, the drive, the men in the hallway, and how you all ended up here.” Maya spoke first.

Her voice sounded flat even to her own ears.

She told them about the original procedure, the residual tissue, the calls from Dr.

Vargas, Rachel and the flash drive, the storage unit, the photo of Rachel’s body, and the threats that used her mother’s hospital room as leverage.

She left out nothing about the clinic’s pattern of leaving procedures incomplete for money and information.

Damian added what he knew about his father’s company appearing in the buyer records.

Maya’s father confirmed the fake cancer documents and the inheritance pressure.

Her mother gave short, careful answers that admitted the false illness but framed it as protection.

When the recorder finally clicked off, the detective looked tired.

“The clinic is already claiming a breach.

They want you as a person of interest, Maya.

Do not leave the city.

We will be in touch.” The room emptied slowly.

Real security stayed posted outside for now.

The burned remains of the drive had been collected as evidence, even though nothing readable was left.

Maya lay back and stared at the ceiling.

The cramps had eased with the medication, but the broken feeling had not.

Every person in her life had used a version of the truth against her.

The clinic had used her body.

Her mother had used a fake disease.

Buyers had used her family name for money.

Even the baby inside her felt like something that had been forced to stay by other people’s decisions.

Damian sat on the edge of the bed and took her hand.

“We’ll get through the investigation.

The baby is strong.

You’re strong.” Maya turned her face toward the window.

She did not feel strong.

She felt like something that had been emptied and refilled with other people’s lies until nothing of her own was left.

That night, after her father and mother had left and the hallway grew quiet, Maya asked Damian to get her something to drink from the cafeteria.

The moment he was gone she reached for the small notebook in her bag and wrote down a name she had seen months earlier on a forum for women in impossible situations — a private doctor who handled quiet cases with no official records if the payment was right.

She used the hospital Wi-Fi on her phone and sent a short message through a temporary account.

*I need a private procedure.

Residual tissue and ongoing pregnancy.

No paper trail.

Can pay cash.

Urgent.* The reply came in under ten minutes.

*Possible.

Consultation tonight possible if you can leave the hospital for two hours.

Address will be sent after confirmation of seriousness.* Maya stared at the screen.

Her hands were steady for the first time in days.

She typed back that she was serious.

When Damian returned with the drink she hid the phone and forced a small smile.

He kissed her forehead and climbed onto the narrow bed beside her.

The need between them was still there, even now.

He was careful because of the bleeding, but the sex was intense and quiet.

Maya held him tightly and let herself feel something other than the broken weight for a few minutes.

When it was over she rested her head on his chest and listened to his heartbeat while the plan settled harder in her mind.

She could not keep this child.

Not after everything.

The baby had survived because a clinic had chosen profit.

It had grown under a mother’s fake illness and a family’s pile of secrets.

Maya felt no space left inside herself to become a mother on top of all that.

The only clean thing she could still choose was to end it properly this time, in secret, before the investigation and the family and the buyers closed every door.

Near midnight the new address arrived.

A quiet residential clinic twenty minutes away.

Payment in cash.

No names.

A driver would wait at the side entrance of the hospital if she confirmed.

Maya confirmed.

She waited until Damian fell into a light sleep in the chair.

Then she dressed slowly, left a short note on the table — *Needed air.

Back soon.

Don’t worry* — and slipped out past the security officer who had stepped away for a moment.

The driver was waiting as promised.

The residential clinic looked like an ordinary house with the blinds drawn.

A woman in her forties opened the door, checked that Maya had come alone, and led her to a clean back room.

No paperwork.

No insurance.

Only a clear explanation of the risks because of the previous incomplete procedure and the current inflammation.

Maya lay down on the table and stared at the ceiling the same way she had the first time.

The woman prepared the instruments.

The familiar cold feeling returned.

Maya’s eyes filled with tears but she did not stop the process.

She needed it finished.

She needed one decision that belonged only to her.

The procedure was harder than the first.

The residual tissue and the inflammation made everything more complicated.

Pain came in sharp waves.

Maya bit down on the cloth they gave her and forced herself to stay still.

When it was finally over she felt the same hollow space open up inside her again, only deeper this time.

The woman helped her sit up.

“You need to rest here for an hour.

Bleeding will be heavier because of the earlier damage.

If the pain spikes or the bleeding soaks through more than two pads an hour, you go straight to an emergency room and tell them everything.” Maya nodded.

She paid the cash.

She sat in the quiet room with her arms wrapped around her empty stomach and waited for the shaking to stop.

Her phone buzzed.

Damian.

*Where are you?

The note isn’t enough.

Call me.* She did not answer.

Another message came a minute later, this one from an unknown number.

*We know you left the hospital.

We know where you are.

The procedure changes nothing about the debt.

The clinic still wants what was on the drive.

And now we have proof you sought a second termination.

That information is worth even more to the right buyer.* Maya’s blood went cold.

She stood up too fast.

Pain lanced through her.

Blood ran down her leg.

The woman who had performed the procedure appeared in the doorway, face suddenly tense.

“You need to leave.

Now.

Someone is outside asking questions about a young woman who arrived alone.” Maya grabbed her bag and moved toward the back door.

Her body felt weak and open and used.

The hollow space inside her was the only thing that felt real.

She stepped into the alley behind the house and saw the man in the dark jacket standing under the streetlight, phone in his hand, watching her like he had been there the whole time.
