BEEP BEEP—
Miles Spade honked the horn.
The car had already stopped.
Ruby Grant groggily opened her eyes, belatedly realizing they had arrived on the small road leading back to the staff dormitories.
“Thank you.”
She weakly propped herself up, one arm protecting Ceci, the other opening the car door.
What was normally an easy task now felt as difficult as if a thousand-pound weight were hanging from her wrist.
Ruby Grant swayed as she walked into the dormitory building.
Miles Spade pulled off his mask and hat.
His charming eyes, framed like peach blossoms, were fixed on the woman’s slowly blurring figure, his brow slightly furrowed.
A person got out of the car that had been following them.
It was Miles Spade’s assistant.
He had been tailing them from a two-car-length distance the whole time.
He stopped respectfully before Miles Spade’s car window and bowed.
“Mr.
Spade.”
The window rolled down.
“Find someone to send her some fever medicine.”
Miles Spade’s thoughts were a tangled mess.
The image of Ruby Grant’s pale, haggard face replayed in his mind, making him feel a suffocating discomfort.
His voice was hoarse as he spoke.
‘My dazzling, beautiful Ruby…
how could she…?’
Miles Spade took a deep breath, pressing a hand to his chaotic heartbeat.
Receiving the order, the assistant immediately made a call to arrange for a pharmacy delivery.
Meanwhile, Ruby Grant, oblivious to what was happening on the road, swayed as she pushed open the door to her dorm room.
Even though her head was spinning, the first thing she did was change Ceci into a set of clean clothes.
After mixing formula for Ceci and feeding her, she held the baby in her arms, her vision flickering between light and dark.
“Ceci, be good…
Mommy…
Mommy’s so tired, I need to sleep for a little while…”
After finishing her broken sentence, her consciousness felt like it was sinking into a mire.
“WAAAH—”
Suddenly, the swaddled Ceci began to wail.
Ruby Grant’s mind snapped back, and she realized with a start that she had just passed out.
“BANG BANG—”
“Miss Grant, your delivery.”
A steady knock came from the door.
Ruby Grant realized it was this sound that had startled Ceci awake.
Pressing her temples, she got out of bed to open the door, where a delivery driver stood.
“Did you get the wrong address?
I didn’t order anything.”
“A rideshare driver ordered it and specified it was for you.
And this hundred yuan—he said you left it in the car.”
The delivery driver handed her the items and left.
Ruby Grant stood at the door, a strange feeling in her heart.
‘It seems that driver was just kind-hearted.
He must have seen a lone mother and child, both with fevers, and decided to help.’
Ruby Grant felt a surge of gratitude for the disabled driver and quickly trudged over to mix the medicine.
‘I can’t get sick.
Who will take care of Ceci otherwise?’
‘But something feels strange.
How did he know my last name is Grant?’
‘Did I say it myself when I was delirious?’
Roughly two hours passed.
Ruby Grant gradually felt her consciousness return, and her vision cleared considerably.
Ruby Grant breathed a sigh of relief and went to pick up Ceci, only to suddenly notice something was wrong.
‘It’s already evening.
Normally, Ceci would be whimpering for milk by now.
Why is she so quiet today?’
Ruby Grant’s heart leaped into her throat as she peered at the baby in the swaddle.
Ceci’s normally fair, chubby little face was flushed red, and her cute, perky nose was wrinkled in discomfort.
Her breathing grew tense and heavy.
She reached out to feel Ceci’s forehead.
‘So hot!’
She recoiled in fright, instantly panicked and at a complete loss.
‘Ceci has a fever!’
Ruby Grant was so scared she forgot to breathe.
She ordered a car on her phone with the fastest speed she’d ever mustered in her life, then ran out to the road to hail a passing taxi.
In a luxury car not far away, Miles Spade quietly watched the woman’s anxious state, but he didn’t approach her.
After a long moment, he narrowed his cold, charming eyes, started the engine, and drove straight away.
He left behind the lone mother and child in the cold wind, clutching her swaddled baby and weeping by herself.
A long while later, a taxi stopped at the nearest private hospital.
“Nurse!
Pediatrics!
Emergency!”
Ruby Grant rushed frantically to the nurses’ station.
Seeing her panicked expression, the nurse didn’t dare to delay.
She completed the paperwork as quickly as possible and pointed her toward the consultation room.
Without a moment to say thanks, Ruby Grant clutched Ceci and sprinted off.
Just as she left, a young nurse ran over to the station, her eyes full of gossip, her face flushed with excitement.
“Did you guys hear?
President Lawford is here!
I heard Miss Grant scraped her ankle, and he came with her.
His handsome face was so dark when he arrived.”
“Oh my god, Miss Grant is the apple of President Lawford’s eye!
He’d probably be heartbroken if she lost a single strand of hair, let alone got a scrape!”
…
The young nurses gathered together, their eyes shining as they discussed excitedly.
Meanwhile, in the exclusive luxury suite of this private hospital.
Yana Grant had one of her fair, shapely legs propped up, her pretty brow furrowed.
She pointed to a very faint scrape on her ankle and blinked pitifully.
“Caleb, do you think the wound will get infected?
It hurts so much.”
Caleb Lawford glanced at it with a cold expression and said in a low voice, “Go get the hospital director.
Tell him to arrange for all the relevant doctors in the hospital to come and examine Miss Grant.”
“President Lawford, I’ll arrange it right away!”
The director hurried over, offering a cautious, placating smile.
After learning the situation, the corner of his mouth twitched slightly, but one look at the cold, harsh face of the hospital’s largest shareholder, Caleb Lawford, sent him scurrying out of the room.
On the other side, Ruby Grant suddenly noticed an unusual commotion in the clinic.
Doctors from every department were being called away, all rushing in the same direction.
She stood where she was, able only to turn to the head nurse, who was also frantically tidying up.
“We just got word that Miss Yana Grant scraped her ankle, and even President Lawford himself came to the hospital with her.
Who has time for you?
All the doctors in the hospital have been reassigned to examine Miss Grant.”
The head nurse shot a look at Ruby Grant, who was holding her child, her expression full of indifference.
‘At this hour, they’re the only patients in pediatrics.’
‘It’s just their bad luck to run into Miss Yana Grant, isn’t it?’
‘Compared to Miss Grant, they naturally have to step aside, right?’
‘If I see President Lawford and take good care of Miss Grant, I might even get noticed and promoted!’
“Just wait here.
It’ll be at least half an hour, maybe one or two.
Once things are settled with Miss Yana Grant, a doctor will naturally come back to see your child!”
As she spoke, she clipped on her name badge, threw on her white coat, and jogged off in the direction the crowd had gone.
Ruby Grant held Ceci in her arms, feeling the child’s body grow hotter and hotter, while her own heart grew colder and colder.
But Ceci was her life.
No matter how disheartened she felt, she had to pull herself together and save her child!
Ruby Grant felt Ceci’s forehead again.
It was scalding hot, so much so that her fingertips trembled in shock.
And even burning up like this, Ceci’s eyes were filled with tears as she looked dependently at her mother!
She was a first-time mother with no experience in dealing with a child’s fever.
At this moment, she hated her own powerlessness, yet she couldn’t fight this injustice.
Refusing to give up, she grabbed the last doctor who was running off, her eyes earnest and pleading.
“Excuse me!
Where are the pediatricians?
An adult is injured, surely you don’t need a pediatrician for that?”
Ruby Grant’s eyes were red as she fought to hold back her tears.
The doctor she had stopped paused and glanced at the red-faced baby in her arms, feeling a pang of sympathy for her plight.
‘This child clearly has a high fever.
She’s so young; even a small fever could be fatal and lead to tragedy!’
‘But…’
The doctor’s palm tightened nervously.
He explained the reason with difficulty, “I heard Miss Grant is pregnant, so the entire hospital is on high alert about her injury.
The director also made the call to reassign the pediatric emergency doctors.”
Ruby Grant’s vision went black, and she nearly collapsed.
‘A single scrape needs all the pediatric emergency doctors in the entire hospital?’
‘But what about my child?
What about my Ceci?’
Ruby Grant stood helplessly in the waiting area, clutching Ceci.
Her eyes, hidden beneath her fallen hair, were desolate and filled with a seething hatred.
“You’ll have to find a way to cool her down physically first.
It’s best if you go out and buy some fever medicine to use for now.
As long as she doesn’t have a seizure, it’s not critical.
Just wait for us to get back.”
“How do I cool her down physically?
What brand of fever medicine should I buy?
Could you write it down for me?”
Ruby Grant held out her phone, but the doctor was already impatient.
‘He wasn’t a saint, just an ordinary person working at the hospital.
President Lawford owned all the shares of this hospital, making him their ultimate boss.
If the director found out he wasn’t there, his job would be on the line.’
With this thought, he quickened his pace, soon leaving Ruby Grant and her daughter behind.
Only Ruby Grant was left, frozen in place, her heart feeling as if it were being clawed and squeezed, a raw, aching pain.
She looked down at the daughter in her arms.
There were tears on her soft little face, and at some point, her eyes had slowly closed!
“Ceci!”
Suddenly, a woman’s bloodcurdling shriek tore through the air.
