“You’ve never cultivated?” Karl asked.
The confusion in his voice couldn’t be more obvious.
How was that even possible?
Ever since Karl came to this world, he had always felt like the most powerful being in the world was Varek.
His title also confirmed that.
Then, when he learned about the cultivation stages, he believed that Varek must be at the Undying Level.
Especially since the most powerful level was the Undying Level.
However, he had also been confused about something.
The book said there were countless Undying stage powerhouses in Salibion.
Yet, Varek was the Sovereign above them all.
How was that possible?
What was even more astonishing was the fact that Rai was also an Undying Level powerhouse, yet he knelt whenever he met Varek.
Putting all these together, Karl felt like something was indeed wrong.
He had even begun to imagine that Varek might be at the peak of the Undying Level, which was why others respected him despite being at the same level as him.
But what was this?
Varek had never cultivated?
Karl felt like he understood the word, but somehow, he was still very confused.
How could something like that ever be possible?
“You’re not a mortal, right?” He asked in a low voice.
But he knew that was really impossible.
Varek seemed so powerful.
Varek waved, and the door opened.
Two men walked in with plates of food in their hands and approached the table at the center of the room.
Seeing them, Karl’s eyes widened.
The aroma of freshly cooked meals wafted into his nose, leaving him secretly salivating.
The men bowed deeply, turned around, and left the room.
Karl immediately stood up.
“You should…” He paused.
“Oh.
You said you don’t eat.”
He still found it weird, though.
Well, everything was weird.
Ever since he became mature enough to think, everything about himself and around him had been really weird.
He shrugged and sat down to eat.
“Tell me, what do you mean by that?” His curiosity had gotten the better of him.
He ate patiently as he waited for Varek’s response.
Varek looked down at the arena.
Two students were fighting.
One was riddled with injuries, while the other wasn’t that much different either.
Seeing his gaze, Karl also looked down.
His brows furrowed at the scene before him.
Despite the injuries on the students, their faces remained calm and determined.
Neither of them was ready to surrender.
Something stirred within his heart.
He raised his eyes to look at Varek again.
Karl felt his heart ache faintly.
For some reason, he felt like Varek was sad…
“I was born this way.”
Varek’s response came.
Karl’s eyes widened. You are reading on novelping.com, the official source.
Varek lifted his eyes off the arena.
His deep blue eyes settled on Karl.
“Since I was young, I’ve always been strong.”
Karl’s lips parted.
He wanted to ask questions, but seeing the blankness in Varek’s eyes, he kept quiet.
Varek lowered his eyes to the stage again.
“I’ve never been able to compete with anyone…” He paused.
“No one has ever been strong enough to make me feel the thrill of power.”
“It’s boring.”
A low sigh escaped his lips.
“When I gained consciousness, I was five.
Alone in a deep and dark forest.
The only creatures I could see around were dangerous beasts.”
“Every day, I would deliberately enter their territories to provoke them, fight them, and kill them.”
“The older I grow, the stronger I become.
I don’t know who my parents are or why I was in the forest, either.”
“I…”
A knock.
Varek stopped.
His eyes snapped toward the door.
“Come in.” He said.
The door opened, revealing a young and tall man.
Karl identified him.
He was Niam, Lyold’s husband.
Niam bowed deeply toward Varek.
“Sovereign.”
Then, to Karl.
“Young Master.”
“No.
Lord.” Karl corrected.
Niam’s eyes moved slightly.
He smiled.
“Lord.” He corrected himself.
Varek glanced at Karl.
The blankness in his eyes disappeared, and the corner of his lips curled.
Karl lowered his head, blinking back the tears that threatened to fall.
His heart ached terribly.
He swallowed the food in his mouth, sniffed, and ate even more.
‘How could Varek be so pitiful?’
‘He was born alone in a dark forest.
How did he survive?
He had no one to play with.
No food to eat.
No parent to take care of him.’
Karl felt like Varek’s childhood was even more miserable than his.
At least he had the aunties at the orphanage to take care of him; Varek had no one at all.
He was only a child, yet he had to survive alone in a deep forest with no human in sight.
‘Is that the reason he doesn’t like to eat?’
Karl glanced at Varek.
The ethereal-looking young man was seriously discussing something with Niam.
However, Karl wasn’t in the mood to listen to their words.
His eyes lingered on Varek’s flawless face.
When did he come to Salibion?”
“How did he survive?”
Varek turned to look at him.
Karl’s lips pursed.
He realized Varek must have heard him.
A small smile formed on his face.
“Continue.
It’s nothing.”
Varek nodded and returned his attention to Niam, who still had his head deeply bowed.
‘Fortunately, he survived.
Fortunately, he was strong enough.’
That was all that mattered.
Karl sighed wearily.
He looked at the food before him and sighed again.
“I can’t afford to waste the food.
I should eat more and finish it all.” Not like he was full anyway.
He lowered his head and devoured the food on the table, clearing the plate of every remnant.
By the time Varek was done with Niam, Karl was also done eating.
He patted his slightly bulging belly with a small smile on his face.
‘I feel better now.’
His heart had been too heavy these days.
But good food was all he needed to feel better again.
Varek stood up.
“Karl, wait here for me.
There’s something I have to do.”
“Huh?” Karl looked around.
“Here?
Alone?” He didn’t want to stay alone.
That would be so boring!
Varek glanced down at the arena.
“You can watch the battles.
It’s fun.”
Karl shook his head.
“No.
It gives me a headache.” How was he supposed to watch people who could crush him with a finger fight?
The envy would give him a heart attack instead, and he might die before the battle even ended.
Karl didn’t want to.
Varek waved his hand, and a book appeared in his hand.
“Will you read a book then?”
“A book?”
Varek nodded.
“It’s about the various worlds.”
Worlds?
Like Earth?
Karl’s ears perked up.
