By late Monday afternoon, the first test was already showing a pattern.

Not proof, but enough to keep going.

PULSE still had problems, but returning viewers were up, and some of them were moving backward through older clips instead of disappearing after the first one.Full novel: Quest Master System: My Players Don't Know I Control Their Quests — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Camila studied the dashboard beside me.

"So we do it again."

"With someone else."

She nodded slowly.

"To find out whether they came back for the format or for her."

"Exactly."

This morning, Camila would’ve wanted my analysis once I was finished with it.

Now her next move depended on understanding it.

Her phone vibrated.

Camila reached for it immediately.

I knew what had happened before I opened my own screen.

QUEST COMPLETE

USE YOUR ASSETS

Another person’s strongest contribution materially shaped your chosen course of action.

REWARDS

+35 Player XP+15 Perception Progress

HIDDEN

SECRETARY Role XP +2

A second panel followed.

PLAYER LEVEL INCREASED

CAMILA REYES

Player Lv.1 → Lv.2

XP: 10 / 150

LEVEL REWARD

+1 Free Attribute Point

Camila stopped moving.

Her eyes traveled over the screen once, then again.

"No way."

I looked up. "What do you mean?"

"Shh, Evan."

She didn’t even look at me.

"This is important."

I almost laughed.

Four days ago, she’d been trying to delete the app.

Now I wasn’t allowed to interrupt it.

My own interface changed.

MASTER QUEST COMPLETE

FIRST ASCENSION

Guide a registered Player to reach Player Lv.2.

REWARD

+25 Master XP+3 Authority

The numbers updated.

QUEST MASTER — Lv.1

Master XP: 75 / 100Authority: 21Players: 1 / 1

Seventy-five Master XP.

Too neat.

Twenty-five for registering my first Player. Twenty-five for her first successful Quest. Twenty-five for guiding her to Level Two.

I opened the only Master Quest still active.

FIRST ALIGNMENT

Raise a registered Player from 0% Role Alignment to any positive value.

REWARD

+25 Master XP+5 Authority

First Player. First Success. First Ascension. First Alignment.

Four Quests worth exactly one hundred Master XP.

I leaned back.

Level One wasn’t really a climb.

It was instruction.

Register someone. Give them a Quest. Develop them. Create Alignment.

The System had spent the entire level teaching me its basic rules, and I had one lesson left.

My eyes moved to another line.

Players: 1 / 1

When Camila had filled that slot, one Player had seemed ridiculous enough.

Now it looked small.

One Player had taken me from zero to seventy-five Master XP in less than a week. With two, I’d have two people completing Quests, developing Roles and triggering whatever other rewards Quest Master had buried behind progression.

Maybe Level Two increased capacity.

Maybe Level Three.

I didn’t know yet.

I wanted to.

Camila was already Player Level Two while I was still Master Level One. Different systems, different scales.

Still irritating.

I opened her hidden panel.

HIDDEN ROLE — SECRETARY

Role XP: 6 / 100Alignment: 0%

Still zero.

Using my analysis hadn’t done it. Listening to me hadn’t done it. Even building her next move around my contribution had only advanced the Role itself.

Whatever Alignment measured, it was more specifically tied to her relationship with me.

I opened her Quest menu.

USE YOUR ASSETS had been the first send of the day. With it complete, the active slot was open again.

STANDARD QUESTS

Active: 0 / 1

Sends Available: 1 / 2

GENERATE OPTIONS

One send left.

I selected it.

Three options appeared.

CLAIM THE ROOM

Take control of a consequential professional discussion and make your position the one others willingly follow.

REWARD

+30 Player XP+20 Presence Progress

HIDDEN

SECRETARY Role XP +1

Good for Camila.

Not what I needed.

The second option was different.

PLACE YOUR BET

Choose someone whose success is worth investing in.

Spend meaningful personal capital—time, visibility, reputation, access or opportunity—to materially strengthen their position.

Their benefit must be real.

REWARD

+40 Player XP

EXECUTIVE PRESENCE — SINGLE USE

Presence +2 during one high-stakes professional or social interaction.

HIDDEN

SECRETARY Role XP +3

If the primary beneficiary is the Quest Master:

Alignment +1–3%

I read the last line twice before opening the third option.

MAKE ROOM

Voluntarily surrender a meaningful advantage or opportunity so another person can use it instead.

Their gain must be real. Your sacrifice must be optional.

REWARD

+45 Player XP+25 Willpower Progress

HIDDEN

SECRETARY Role XP +4

If the beneficiary is the Quest Master:

Alignment +0–5%

Five percent was tempting.

Zero wasn’t.

I didn’t need the biggest result yet.

I needed the first one.

PLACE YOUR BET required Camila to decide that somebody else’s success was worth spending her own capital on. If that somebody was me, the System would finally recognize something specifically between us.

That was cleaner than gambling on a five-percent ceiling with no floor.

I selected it.

SEND QUEST?

[YES]

I pressed YES.

Sends Available: 0 / 2

Camila’s phone vibrated.

Her attention snapped toward it.

She read the Quest once, then again. Her eyes lingered on the reward before lifting toward me.

Only for a second.

But this time, I knew exactly what I needed from her.

If she chose me, Level One ended today.
