The notification had been sitting on my phone since 12:41.
I’d noticed it immediately. Opening an impossible interface labeled QUEST MASTER while Rachel was hovering around our section had seemed less intelligent.
At 2:18, she finally disappeared into a meeting.
I opened it.
PLAYER QUEST COMPLETE

REWARD DISTRIBUTED

HIDDEN REWARD
SECRETARY Role XP +2
So that was it.
Proof.
Camila had accepted a Quest I’d chosen, completed it and received something real.
I’d watched the real part.
For most of the early afternoon, she’d barely touched her phone. No Teams. No turning around with that look that usually meant she’d discovered a task she preferred on my screen instead of hers.
Then, a few minutes ago, she’d started checking messages again.
Focus Surge had ended.
Another notification waited underneath.
MASTER QUEST COMPLETE
FIRST SUCCESS
Guide a registered Player to complete their first Quest.
REWARD

My profile updated.
EVAN COLE
QUEST MASTER — Lv.1
Master XP: 50 / 100Authority: 18
Players: 1 / 1
Halfway to Level Two because Camila had finished her work.
Her progress could become mine.
That seemed worth remembering.
Two new notifications appeared.
NEW MASTER QUEST
FIRST ASCENSION
Guide a registered Player to reach Player Lv.2.
REWARD
+25 Master XP+3 Authority
Then:
NEW MASTER QUEST
FIRST ALIGNMENT
Establish positive Role Alignment with a registered Player.
CONDITION
Raise a Player from 0% Role Alignment to any positive value.
REWARD
+25 Master XP
+5 Authority
Either one would put me at seventy-five Master XP.
Both would get me to Level Two.
I opened Camila’s profile.
CAMILA REYES
PLAYER — Lv.1XP: 40 / 100
HIDDEN ROLE
SECRETARY — Lv.1Role XP: 2 / 100Role Alignment: 0%
Still zero.
I tapped Alignment.
ROLE ALIGNMENT
Measures integration of behavior consistent with the assigned Hidden Role relative to the Quest Master.
Role-compatible self-development may increase Role XP without increasing Alignment.
That explained CLEAR THE BOARD.
Organization. Efficiency. Handling responsibilities herself.
All compatible with the Role.
None of it had been for me.
Role XP without Alignment.
Fair enough.
A new section had appeared lower on the screen.
STANDARD QUEST CAPACITY
Player: CAMILA REYES
Quest Allowance: 1 / 2 used
Active Quest Slots: 0 / 1
Reset: 04:00 local
Player Visibility: Hidden
So there was a limit.
Two Standard Quests per cycle, one active at a time.
Probably a good thing. Otherwise I could’ve spent the afternoon feeding Camila forty-XP errands until the System broke or she did.
I tapped the capacity line.
Standard Quest Allowance and Active Quest Slots may increase through System progression.
Eventually, more Quests.
For now, I had one left.
Which meant the choice mattered.
The question I’d gone to sleep with last night was gone.
Is this real?
Yes.
Now I had a better one.
How do I use it?
I opened QUEST SELECTION.
Three cards unfolded.
1. BE REMEMBERED
Receive explicit positive recognition from a senior colleague for professional work completed today.
Direct solicitation does not count.
REWARD
+35 XP
+20 PRE Progress
HIDDEN
SECRETARY Role XP +1
Useful for her.
Predictable.
I opened the second.
2. BANK THE HOURS
Complete all remaining priority work before leaving Aurelia and define your three highest-priority objectives for the next workday.
REWARD
+35 XP
SLEEP COMPRESSION — SINGLE USE
Next sleep cycle requires 4 hours for full recovery.
Effect expires after the next completed sleep cycle.
HIDDEN
SECRETARY Role XP +2
I stopped there.
Four hours total for a full night’s recovery.
For Camila, that wasn’t really a sleep reward.
It was time.
Time to work later, wake earlier, prepare, train—whatever she wanted to do with it.
More importantly, she’d feel the difference tomorrow morning.
Focus Surge had lasted ninety minutes.
This would follow her home.
Then I opened the third card.
3. LIGHTEN THE LOAD
Identify a colleague carrying a meaningful unresolved professional workload and materially improve the outcome before end of day.
REWARD
+45 XP
+20 PER Progress
HIDDEN
SECRETARY Role XP +3
QUEST MASTER SYNERGY
If the assisted colleague is the Quest Master:
Role Alignment: +1–3%
Final gain determined by significance, initiative and direct benefit.
My attention stayed there.
One to three percent.
Five minutes ago, zero had looked annoyingly permanent. Now the System was showing me a direct path away from it.
All I’d have to do was make myself the obvious person to help.
Leave something unfinished. Mention a deadline. Give Camila an opportunity to step in.
The Quest wouldn’t even need to name me.
And if she did it, I’d move closer to Level Two.
I wanted to choose it.
That was exactly why I shouldn’t.
The third option was better for me.
The second was better for her.
Camila had completed exactly one Quest. Using the next one to start steering her toward me already would be treating the System like a machine I could shake until obedience fell out.
Even I knew that was stupid.
I looked back at BANK THE HOURS.
The first Quest had proven the System worked.
The second could prove something more important.
That keeping it was worth it.
Four hours tonight, fully rested tomorrow.
Camila wanted the Top Two badly enough to use every advantage she could find. Give someone like that extra time and eventually she wouldn’t see a mysterious app anymore.
She’d see an edge.
And once people learned what an advantage felt like, giving it up became harder.
The Master Quest could wait.
Alignment could wait.
I selected BANK THE HOURS.

[SEND]
I pressed it.
Across the office, Camila’s phone lit up.
Her hand moved almost immediately.
I watched over the top of my laptop as she read.
Her expression changed.
First, a slight widening of the eyes.
Then she read the reward again.
The corner of her mouth lifted.
A second later, she was grinning.
Actually grinning.
There was something bright in her face now that hadn’t been there when she’d spent half the morning trying to figure out what the app was.
She wanted it.
Not the Quest.
The reward.
Her thumb moved.
My screen flashed.
