After the apocalypse began, some people with exceptionally strong willpower would not immediately turn into zombies after being infected. Instead, they would keep shifting between a zombie and a living human.

If they failed to hold on, they would eventually become zombies. Zombies of this type were stronger than the ordinary zombies outside; once they mutated, they were usually level-three zombies or higher.

If they managed to endure the transformation, they would become corpse-mutated humans. Aside from their eyes, their appearance was almost indistinguishable from that of normal people. However, they were stronger than both humans and zombies. They could also control ordinary zombies, becoming zombie kings. They could even disguise themselves as humans and enter crowds, committing many terrifying acts.Full novel: Reborn in the Apocalypse: Picking Up a Corpse King as a Bodyguard — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Mu Cheng left her spatial storage and followed the sound. The crystal cores inside the brains of corpse-mutated humans contained far more power than those of ordinary zombies. Since she had encountered one that was in the middle of transforming, she didn’t want to miss the opportunity to obtain that crystal core.

Following the noise, Mu Cheng arrived at the prison. The gate was locked, so she took out a gun, attached a silencer, and fired five or six shots before finally breaking the lock.

After entering the prison, Mu Cheng immediately switched on the lights. The imprisoned inmates saw her and rushed to the doors of their cells, shaking the iron bars and shouting loudly.

“Help! Let us out!”

“Save me!”

“Please save me!”

The zombies that had already mutated also rushed to the doors, repeatedly slamming into the iron bars and letting out hoarse roars.

Mu Cheng ignored the prisoners who were locked up and followed the sound directly, searching for the corpse-mutated human.

At the end of the corridor, in one of the cells, she found him.

It was a man wearing a military uniform. He had his back to Mu Cheng, so she couldn’t see his face clearly, but she could see that his hands were locked in handcuffs. He was roaring in pain, struggling and kicking wildly.

“Ah!”

The man smelled the scent of a living person. He let out a furious roar, turned around, and stared at Mu Cheng with a pair of blood-red eyes.

It was him!

Mu Cheng stared at the man in disbelief.

Tang Nuo—the captain of the Flying Eagle Special Forces Company in the capital, and the second young master of the Tang family. The Tang family held an extremely important position in the capital and throughout the entire military world.

Tang Nuo’s father, Tang Guohua, was her uncle’s comrade-in-arms and also his superior. Their families even lived in the same military residential compound.

Her older brother and Tang Nuo were close friends. When she was little and visited her aunt’s house, she often ran around the compound following behind her brother and Tang Nuo. Tang Nuo had always been like a big brother—protecting her, giving her tasty snacks, and smiling indulgently at all her mischievous pranks.

About two months ago, her brother had even sent her a photo of Tang Nuo as an adult. His meaning had been clear: Cheng Jiang wasn’t suitable for her, so why not try getting to know Tang Nuo instead? Tang Nuo was a very good person, and with the relationship between the Tang family and the Su family, he would certainly treat her well.

Tang Nuo looked at the girl outside the cell. Using every bit of his remaining sanity, he struggled to say a single sentence:

“Go… leave… now.”

He didn’t want anyone to see him in this state, nor did he want to hurt anyone. That was why he had left alone and hidden himself in the prison.

Save him.

A voice in Mu Cheng’s mind kept reminding her: save Tang Nuo.

Mu Cheng took out the key she had casually picked up earlier, unlocked the iron door, and stepped inside. She walked toward Tang Nuo and crouched beside him.

His head was covered in blood. The floor, the walls, and the iron door around him were all splattered with it. During the transformation, the pain must have been unbearable, so he had chosen to harm himself.

Mu Cheng’s gaze fell on his hands.

His wrists had been rubbed raw by the handcuffs, the flesh torn and bloody. On his right arm there was a wound where a zombie had bitten off a chunk of flesh. The wound had turned pitch black, and black blood kept flowing from it.
