The night grew deeper, and the hospital, bustling with people, gradually quieted down.
Claudia Ross lay in the hospital bed receiving an IV drip.
She was motionless, as if asleep.
A doctor in a white coat and mask tread lightly into the ward.
Seeing Claudia Ross sleeping, he quickly approached, pulled out a syringe from his pocket, and injected the liquid into the IV bottle.
The whole series of actions took less than a minute.
Just like when he arrived, he left without a sound as if nothing had happened.
After the door closed, Claudia Ross suddenly opened her eyes and hastily removed the IV needle from her hand.
Because she used too much force, blood began to seep from where the needle had been.
She pressed on the puncture site with her hand, her breathing ragged, her heart almost leaping out of her chest.
Shortly after, Mark Reed rushed in from outside.
He anxiously asked, “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” Claudia Ross said, looking at the IV bag.
“That person just added something to my IV drip, could you please find someone to test it and see what it is?”
“Sure!”
Mark Reed turned off the IV drip valve and took out the bottle.
He returned after a short while to stay by Claudia Ross’s side.
“Scared?”
“I’m fine.”
Everything was unfolding as she expected; despite being scared, she wasn’t panicked and helpless.
Claudia Ross’s hands hidden under the blanket were still trembling.
“I hope after today, my child and I will be safe.”
Perhaps Nana Monty was right; she should find a place to hide.
Rivile City was not safe.
She had no idea when danger would strike.
She might dodge it once, but she couldn’t be sure to avoid it every time.
She couldn’t risk her and her child’s lives.
Mark Reed furrowed his brows: “Was it the child’s father who made the move?”
“It should be the woman by his side,” responded Claudia Ross, clasping her hands tightly without further explanation.
“Shouldn’t we tell the child’s father, so he can protect you?”
“No, I won’t tell him,” Claudia Ross said gently, protecting her abdomen, “The child is mine; it has nothing to do with him.”
Mark Reed looked at Claudia Ross, who was brimming with maternal love, and said softly, “You’re such a good person, losing you is his loss.
You have to live a better life than before.”
“Yes, I will,” said Claudia Ross.
Not an overly emotional person, at this moment she was so moved she could hardly speak.
Her eyes brimming with tears, she managed a grainy smile: “Mr.
Reed, you are my child’s lifesaver, thank you, thank you…”
Mark Reed stood up: “Don’t mention it, you lie down and rest.
I’ll be outside watching; no one is going to bother you again.”
“You have my thanks.”
“It’s nothing.”
Mark Reed sat on the long bench in the corridor, answering emails on his phone.
The drug test report came out two hours later.
It was mifepristone.
A drug widely used to terminate early pregnancies.
It seemed the person really intended to get rid of the child in Claudia Ross’s belly.
…
After spending a few days in the hospital, Claudia Ross was discharged and received a call from Hailey Jack the next day.
Wyatt Perry wanted to have dinner with her to discuss the divorce proceedings.
Even though they had signed the divorce agreement, there were still some legal processes to go through, and the divorce certificate couldn’t be issued immediately.
Claudia Ross too wanted to see Wyatt Perry, so she went to the restaurant at the agreed time.
Pushing open the private room door of the restaurant and seeing Katie Poole sitting happily by Wyatt Perry’s side, Claudia Ross’s face instantly darkened.
So this was a trap.
What new danger awaited her?
