"Brute," Elyra muttered under her breath, the word barely a ghost of air against the fabric of his sleeve.

She let out a long, quiet sigh that trembled against her lips, closing her eyes for a single second just to ground herself. Just get through tonight, she told herself, repeating it like a silent, desperate mantra. Just survive the next few hours. Smile, don’t drop, don’t scream, and then you can collapse into a bed and sleep like there’s no tomorrow.

Her feet already ached inside the delicate slippers, and the corset laces dug into her ribs with every forced breath, but none of that mattered. Not tonight. Tonight she simply had to survive.Full novel: Sacrificed To The Cursed Lycan King — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

She thought of her Auntie then, unbidden, the way she used to say that pain was only ever temporary if you refused to let it live in you. She wasn’t sure she believed that anymore, but she clung to the words anyway, the way a drowning woman clings to driftwood.

The heavy velvet curtains at the edge of the high dais parted, and one of the High Elders... a towering Lycan with silver-streaked hair and a face carved out of old granite, stepped forward to raise his crystal glass. His voice boomed across the cavernous ballroom, cutting clean through the hum of stringed instruments and low chatter.

"Presenting His Majesty, The Lycan King, Valeric Draeven... and his newly bound bride, the Lady of the Northern Reach!"

A chorus of polite, rhythmic applause swept through the hall like a sudden tide. Valeric didn’t move a single muscle in his face. He simply turned, his iron-rigid arm guiding Elyra down the grand marble steps from the high platform where they had been officially announced. The second her embroidered slippers hit the main floorboards, the court closed in around them like cold water rushing over a stone.

Elyra fought the urge to shrink back against him, forcing her spine straight the way her Auntie had once taught her... shoulders back, chin high, never let them see you flinch.

She wondered if her Auntie had ever imagined those words would one day carry her through a den of wolves dressed in silk and jewels, all of them waiting for her to slip.

"Your Majesty! A magnificent pairing!" A rotund Alpha lord in a gold-braided doublet beamed, stepping directly into their path and bowing deeply. "The southern borders will certainly sleep easier tonight knowing the throne is secured."

"A glorious evening, my lord," an elderly matriarch chimed in, her neck dripping with heavy, clinking sapphires as her sharp, predatory eyes raked over Elyra from head to heel. "May the moon bless your union with strength and unbroken lines."

Elyra did nothing but offer a stiff, fragile nod, forcing her lips to curve upward into a tight, practiced smile that didn’t reach her eyes. She felt completely suffocated. The air in the room was thick with heavy velvet, roasting spices, and the sharp, territorial scent of dozens of alpha shifters all marking their space.

The noise was beginning to ring in her ears, each thump of her heart sending a fresh, hot wave of agony across her torn back where the midnight dress dragged against her skin. She wondered, not for the first time that night, how many more strangers she would have to smile at before she was allowed to simply exist in silence.

Every compliment felt like another brick added to the wall closing in around her, another reminder that the woman they praised did not actually exist.

Then the crowd parted cleanly as Lady Vivienne made her way through the throng, her face practically radiating with pure, unadulterated happiness, her velvet gown sweeping gracefully over the polished stone.

"Oh, look at the two of you!" Vivienne beamed, stepping up to them and reaching out to gently squeeze Elyra’s free hand with warm, ink-ringed fingers. "Welcome to the dynasty, Elowen Veyrith... no, no. That’s wrong, isn’t it? You’re my grandson’s bride now. You are Elowen Draeven now."

Elyra managed a real smile this time, nodding politely as she swallowed down the sudden, bitter lump in her throat. "Thank you, Nana."

A sharp, painful stab of guilt twisted deep in her chest. Nana had been nothing but kind, warm, and utterly glowing since she arrived at the stronghold. It made Elyra’s stomach turn to know she was standing here lying to her... lying about her name, lying about who she was, and pretending to be Elowen.

They were full blood sisters, born of the same parents, sharing the exact same bloodline, yet it was Elyra trapped in this farce while pretending to be the cherished daughter. Every time Nana looked at her with such open affection, the deception felt heavier, like a stone sinking slowly into her chest.

She wondered what Nana’s face would look like the day the truth finally surfaced... whether that warmth would curdle into betrayal, or whether some fragment of it might survive the wreckage.

Mirela, their biological mother, had never shown Elyra an ounce of warmth or affection. It was her late Auntie who had loved her, protected her, and held her hand before she passed away. Sitting in this cold palace, carrying the weight of a fake identity, Elyra missed her Auntie’s warmth more than ever... missed the smell of dried lavender in her small cottage, missed the way she used to hum old lullabies while braiding Elyra’s hair by candlelight.

She would have given anything, in that moment, to trade every jewel in the room for one more hour in that cramped little cottage, wrapped in a threadbare blanket instead of borrowed silk.

Nana was the only person in this entire palace who treated her like a human being. There had been no icy stares from her, no quiet, biting sneers about her being a werewolf or wolfless. The maids who had prepared her dress earlier had been super judgey, hiding their disdain behind polite, robotic movements... their narrowed eyes and stiff shoulders screaming Eww, a savage werewolf in the royal suites, with every hairpin they shoved into her hair.

But Nana? Nana had treated her like a queen from the very first second, and for that alone, Elyra could have wept.

"You look absolutely radiant, darling," Vivienne murmured, her thumb gently smoothing over the back of Elyra’s hand. "I knew that shade of silk would bring out the gold in your eyes. Doesn’t she look breathtaking, Valeric?"

Valeric’s jaw remained set. His expression didn’t shift by a fraction of a millimeter. "She is dressed appropriately for the court, Nana."

Vivienne scoffed softly, shaking her head at him. "You absolute stone. Ignore him, my dear. He wouldn’t know how to give a proper compliment if it were written down on parchment for him."

Before Elyra could answer, a smooth, honeyed voice cut through the air from behind them.

"Congratulations, Your Majesty."

The crowd parted slightly to make way for a woman who looked as though she had been carved from polished marble and dipped in silk. She was striking... tall, with porcelain skin and high, sharp cheekbones framed by a cascading waterfall of rich, copper-red hair that curled down past her waist.

She wore a heavy gown of dark, liquid emerald silk that dipped low at the collar, highlighting a choker of raw, uncut emeralds. Something about her poise made the surrounding nobles instinctively straighten, as though her mere presence demanded better posture from the room.

She stepped forward with fluid, terrifying grace, her lips curved into a flawless, perfectly practiced smile aimed directly at Valeric.

"The court has been buzzing with anticipation for weeks," the redhead said softly, her voice thick with an intimate, familiar warmth that made Elyra’s instinct prickle. "It is... remarkable to finally see you standing here with your bride."

She offered a low, graceful curtsy to Valeric, her eyes lingering on his face for a beat too long before she slowly turned her head toward Elyra.

The smile stayed on her face, but the moment her eyes locked onto Elyra, the air between them turned to ice. She flicked her gaze down to Elyra’s hand resting on Valeric’s arm, then up over her dress, and finally straight into her eyes. It was a single, lightning-fast glance, but it said everything.

It was a look of absolute, venomous disdain... a silent, razor-sharp assessment that dismissed Elyra as a cheap, temporary intruder in a room where she didn’t belong. Elyra felt the sting of it settle beneath her skin, sharper than any of the earlier stares from the maids.

Something ancient and territorial coiled low in her stomach, a warning she didn’t fully understand but instinctively trusted.

Elyra stiffened, her fingers tightening slightly against Valeric’s jacket before she forced herself to relax. She decided right then and there to stay entirely clear of this woman. She was in no mood for petty court fights, and her back was throbbing far too viciously for her to waste energy trading silent daggers with some bitter Lycan noble.

"Lady Rubina," Valeric acknowledged, his voice dropping into that same flat, emotionless tone he used for everyone. He gave a single, rigid nod. "Thank you for attending."

"I wouldn’t have missed it for the world, Valeric," Rubina murmured, her green eyes flashing with something dark and quiet before she glided back into the cluster of watching nobles, her emerald skirt trailing behind her like a warning.

Before the silence could settle, a loud, cheerful voice shattered the heavy tension from the left side of the aisle.

"Well, well, well! If it isn’t the royal brooding machine himself!"
