Not fear.

It was the uncomfortable sensation that someone had been watching me.

I opened my eyes slowly.

The dormitory was quiet.

Liam and Noah were still asleep.

Asher’s bed was empty.

Again.

For a few seconds, I simply stared at the empty mattress.

Then I remembered.

He had promised he’d be back.

He had come home.

He had sat beside me.

He had held my hand.

A small smile appeared on my face.

I pulled my blanket closer.

Maybe everything was going to be okay.

Maybe I was worrying about nothing.

I got ready for class.

But the strange feeling didn’t leave.

— By the time I reached the hallway, I noticed something.

People were looking at me.

Not everyone.

But enough.

A few students whispered when I walked past.

One girl glanced at me, whispered something to her friend, and both of them laughed.

I lowered my head.

Ignore it.

I continued walking.

Then someone called out.

“Hey.” I stopped.

I turned around.

A boy I recognized from the cafeteria stood several feet away.

The same student who had made comments about Asher.

He smiled.

“Where’s your bodyguard?” My stomach tightened.

“I don’t know.” “Really?” He looked around dramatically.

“I thought you two went everywhere together.” His friends laughed.

I tried to walk away.

“Wait.” I stopped again.

“What’s your problem?” He stepped closer.

“You.” I swallowed.

“I haven’t done anything.” “Exactly.” He laughed.

“You act like you’re too good to talk to anyone.” “I don’t.” “You hide behind Asher.” My fingers curled into my palms.

“I don’t hide behind him.” “Really?” He moved closer.

“Then why do you always look for him whenever someone talks to you?” I couldn’t answer.

Because the truth was…

I did.

Not because I was helpless.

Because Asher made me feel safe.

And I didn’t know how to explain that to someone who had never needed that kind of safety.

The boy smirked.

“Thought so.” He walked away.

I remained there for a moment.

My heart was beating too fast.

Then I forced myself to continue.

— Asher found me outside the lecture hall.

He took one look at my face.

“What’s wrong?” “Nothing.” His eyes narrowed.

“You’ve been saying that a lot.” I smiled weakly.

“I’m okay.” He stepped closer.

“Look at me.” I did.

His expression softened.

“Did someone say something?” I hesitated.

“…No.” He knew.

I could tell.

But instead of pressing me, he reached down and adjusted the strap of my backpack where it had twisted around my shoulder.

“There.” I looked at him.

“…Thank you.” He smiled.

“Come on.” We entered class together.

And for the first time that morning…

I felt like I could breathe.

— The lecture lasted almost two hours.

Halfway through, I began struggling to stay awake.

I had slept badly.

Asher noticed.

He quietly pushed a bottle of water toward me.

I looked at him.

He mouthed: Drink.

I tried not to smile.

I drank.

A few minutes later, my eyes began closing again.

I fought it.

I really did.

But the professor’s voice was soothing, the classroom was warm, and I was exhausted.

My head slowly dipped.

Then— thump.

My forehead landed lightly against Asher’s shoulder.

My eyes flew open.

I immediately sat straight.

“I’m sorry!” Asher was staring at me.

Then he smiled.

“It’s okay.” “I wasn’t sleeping.” “You were.” “I was thinking.” “With your eyes closed?” “…Yes.” He laughed quietly.

I frowned.

“Stop laughing.” “I’m not.” “You are.” His smile became wider.

I looked away.

My face was burning.

Then I felt his hand gently move my notebook closer.

“Sleep for a few minutes.” “But the professor—” “I’ll wake you.” I hesitated.

Then slowly lowered my head again.

This time…

I rested it against his shoulder on purpose.

His body became still.

Neither of us spoke.

And somehow…

I fell asleep.

— When I woke up, class had ended.

The room was almost empty.

I lifted my head.

Asher was still sitting beside me.

“You let me sleep.” “You looked tired.” “You could have woken me.” “I didn’t want to.” I stared at him.

“Why?” He shrugged.

“You looked peaceful.” My heart did something strange.

I looked down.

“…Thank you.” He gently tapped my forehead.

“You’re welcome.” — We left the classroom together.

But the moment we entered the hallway, I noticed something.

The same group of students was standing near the stairs.

They looked at us.

One of them smiled.

Then he deliberately stepped into our path.

Asher stopped.

“Move.” The student didn’t.

Instead, he looked at me.

“You really can’t go anywhere without him, can you?” My stomach dropped.

“Leave him alone,” Asher said.

“I’m talking to him.” “I don’t care.” The student laughed.

“Why are you so protective?” Asher’s jaw tightened.

“Because I want to be.” The student looked at his friends.

“Did you hear that?” They laughed.

Then he turned toward me.

“Does he always speak for you?” I felt my face heat.

“No.” “Then speak.” I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Asher looked at me.

He didn’t answer for me.

He simply waited.

Finally, I whispered, “Please move.” The student stared at me.

Then stepped aside.

“Fine.” We walked past.

I didn’t breathe properly until we reached the end of the hallway.

— “Asher…” “Hm?” “I’m sorry.” He stopped.

“For what?” “This.” He frowned.

“What’s this?” “All of it.” I gestured vaguely behind us.

“The rumors.” “The people talking.” “The trouble.” “It’s not your fault.” “But—” “No.” His voice was firm.

“You don’t apologize for other people’s behavior.” I looked down.

He sighed.

Then his voice softened.

“Come here.” I looked up.

Before I could ask what he meant, he stepped closer and gently pulled me into a hug.

My eyes widened.

We were still in the hallway.

Anyone could see us.

I froze.

“Asher…” “Just breathe.” His hand rested gently against the back of my head.

“You’re shaking.” I hadn’t even noticed.

I slowly relaxed.

His warmth surrounded me.

The familiar scent of soap and coffee filled my senses.

For a few seconds…

I forgot where we were.

I forgot about the whispers.

I forgot about everything.

Then someone walked past.

I immediately pulled away.

Asher looked at me.

I couldn’t meet his eyes.

“Sorry.” He frowned.

“Why are you apologizing again?” “I…” I didn’t know.

Maybe because being held by him felt too good.

Maybe because I was afraid of needing it.

— That evening, Asher had work.

He left around six.

I stood by the dorm door.

“Don’t stay up.” I nodded.

“I won’t.” He pointed at me.

“Promise?” “Promise.” He smiled.

“Good.” Then he left.

I watched the door close.

And the room suddenly felt too quiet.

— At eight, I studied.

At nine, I ate.

At ten, I showered.

At eleven, I got into bed.

I was proud of myself.

I wasn’t waiting.

I wasn’t checking the clock.

I wasn’t worrying.

At least…

That’s what I told myself.

Then my phone vibrated.

Asher: Still at work.

I smiled.

Kael: Okay.

A few seconds later: Asher: Did you eat?

I laughed quietly.

Kael: Yes.

Asher: Good boy.

My entire face became hot.

I stared at the message.

Then immediately buried my face in my pillow.

“…Why would he say that?” My heart wouldn’t calm down.

I typed a reply.

Deleted it.

Typed another.

Deleted that too.

Finally: Kael: Goodnight.

His response came almost immediately.

Asher: Goodnight, Rabbit.

Sleep well.

I smiled at the screen.

Then placed my phone beneath my pillow.

— I don’t know how long I slept.

But sometime after midnight…

I heard a noise.

My eyes opened.

The room was dark.

I sat up.

“…What was that?” Nothing.

I listened.

Then I heard it again.

A faint sound outside the door.

Footsteps.

My heart began beating faster.

I slipped out of bed.

I walked quietly toward the door.

The hallway light beneath it flickered.

Someone was standing outside.

I froze.

Then a voice came through.

“Kael.” My blood ran cold.

I knew that voice.

I hadn’t heard it in weeks.

But I could never forget it.

My uncle.

My hand immediately covered my mouth.

I stepped backward.

“No…” The handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

My whole body trembled.

He couldn’t get in.

The door was locked.

But he was here.

At my school.

He had found me.

And suddenly…

The safety I had spent months building around myself felt very fragile.

I reached for my phone with shaking hands.

There was only one person I wanted to call.

Asher.

I opened our messages.

My fingers hovered over his name.

Then the footsteps outside began moving away.

Silence returned.

I stood there for several seconds, unable to breathe.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Asher.

I’m coming home now.

My eyes filled with tears.

I typed: Please hurry.

The reply came almost instantly.

Why?

I stared at the screen.

I didn’t know how to explain it.

So I typed the only thing I could.

I’m scared.

Three dots appeared.

Then: I’m on my way.

I held the phone against my chest.

And for the first time since I’d arrived at this school…

I understood something.

The past hadn’t forgotten me.

It had followed me here.

And this time…

It had found the person I cared about most.
