The Man Outside the Door Kael’s POV I didn’t sleep.
Not even for a minute.
I remained sitting on my bed with my knees pulled against my chest, staring at the dormitory door.
It hadn’t moved.
The hallway outside had gone completely silent.
But I could still hear his voice in my head.
“Kael.” My uncle.
After all this time…
He had found me.
My fingers trembled around my phone.
The last message from Asher was still open.
I’m on my way.
I read it again.
Then again.
As if looking at those four words could somehow make me feel safer.
But my fear wasn’t leaving.
Because I knew my uncle.
And I knew what he was capable of.
He never came looking for me because he missed me.
He came when he wanted something.
Money.
Control.
Someone to blame.
Someone to hurt.
I squeezed my eyes shut.
Please don’t let him come back.
A few minutes passed.
Then I heard footsteps.
My heart nearly stopped.
The footsteps became louder.
Someone stopped outside the door.
I froze.
The handle moved.
I couldn’t breathe.
Then— “Kael?” I almost cried from relief.
“Asher?” The door opened.
Asher stepped inside.
The moment he saw me, his expression changed.
I must have looked terrible.
I was still sitting on the bed, barefoot, pale, my phone clutched tightly in my hand.
He shut the door behind him.
“What happened?” I couldn’t answer.
He walked toward me.
“Kael.” His voice softened.
“Look at me.” I tried.
I really tried.
But the moment I saw his face…
Everything I’d been holding inside broke.
I stood and grabbed his shirt.
“Asher…” He immediately wrapped his arms around me.
“Hey.” His hand moved slowly over my back.
“I’m here.” I pressed my face against his chest.
“He came.” Asher went still.
“Who?” “My uncle.” The warmth disappeared from his expression.
“What?” “He was outside the door.” Asher’s arms tightened around me.
“Did he touch you?” I shook my head.
“No.” “Did he hurt you?” “No.” “Did he say anything?” I swallowed.
“He called my name.” Asher’s jaw tightened.
“Where is he?” “I don’t know.” “Did you see where he went?” I shook my head again.
Asher was silent.
Then he gently pulled back so he could look at me.
“Did he get inside?” “No.” “Are you sure?” I nodded.
“The door was locked.” His shoulders relaxed slightly.
“Okay.” He brushed a strand of hair away from my forehead.
“You’re safe.” I stared at him.
“But what if he comes back?” “Then he won’t get near you.” His voice was different.
Low.
Cold.
Certain.
I had heard Asher angry before.
But never like this.
I caught his sleeve.
“Asher…” He looked at my hand.
“Don’t do anything stupid.” His eyes met mine.
“I won’t.” “You promise?” He hesitated.
Then nodded.
“I promise.” But somehow…
I wasn’t completely convinced.
— We stayed awake for the rest of the night.
Asher refused to leave me alone.
He sat on the edge of my bed while I tried to calm down.
Every few minutes, he looked toward the door.
Finally, around three in the morning, he said, “Try to sleep.” “I can’t.” “You need to.” “What if he comes back?” “He won’t get through that door.” “But—” “I’ll be here.” I looked at him.
“You’ll stay?” “Yeah.” I hesitated.
Then slowly reached for his sleeve.
My fingers curled around the fabric.
Asher glanced down.
“You want me to stay here?” I nodded.
He sighed softly.
“Okay.” He shifted closer.
I slowly lay down.
Asher remained sitting beside me.
His hand rested on top of the blanket.
I stared at it.
Then reached out and placed my fingers over his.
His hand immediately closed around mine.
The tension in my chest slowly eased.
“Thank you.” “Go to sleep.” I closed my eyes.
For the first time that night…
I felt safe enough to try.
— I woke several hours later.
Sunlight filled the room.
For a moment, I forgot everything.
Then I felt something warm against my fingers.
I looked down.
Asher was asleep beside the bed.
His head rested against the mattress.
He must have fallen asleep sitting there.
I stared at him.
He looked completely different when he slept.
Less intimidating.
Less like the boy everyone avoided in the hallway.
Just…
Asher.
I carefully reached down and brushed a strand of hair away from his forehead.
He stirred.
My hand immediately froze.
His eyes opened.
He looked at me.
“…Morning.” “Morning.” He slowly sat up.
“How are you feeling?” I thought about it.
“Better.” “Good.” He stood.
Then immediately stretched his back.
A pained expression crossed his face.
“You slept like that all night?” “Apparently.” “I’m sorry.” “Why?” “Because you stayed awake because of me.” He looked at me.
“I stayed because I wanted to.” I lowered my eyes.
“You should have slept.” “So should you.” I smiled slightly.
“You sound like me.” “Maybe I’m learning.” — We went to the administration office after breakfast.
Asher insisted.
I didn’t want to.
I didn’t want people knowing.
I didn’t want questions.
I didn’t want my uncle’s name appearing in school records.
But Asher wouldn’t let it go.
“He came onto campus.” “I don’t know if he did.” “You saw him outside our dorm.” “I know.” “Then we report it.” I stopped walking.
“Asher.” He turned.
“I don’t want him arrested.” “Why?” “Because he’ll know I told someone.” “And?” “He’ll come after me.” Asher’s expression hardened.
“He’s already come after you.” I couldn’t answer.
He stepped closer.
“Kael, hiding from someone like that doesn’t make you safer.” I looked away.
“I just want this to disappear.” “I know.” His voice softened.
“But pretending it isn’t happening won’t make it disappear.” I swallowed.
Then nodded.
“…Okay.” — The school security officer listened carefully.
I sat beside Asher.
My hands were cold.
The officer asked questions.
“Do you know his full name?” I answered.
“Does he have a history of threatening you?” I hesitated.
“…Yes.” “Has he physically harmed you before?” My throat tightened.
“Yes.” Asher’s hand moved beneath the desk.
His fingers found mine.
I held on.
The officer noticed but said nothing.
“Do you know where he lives?” I gave the information I knew.
When the meeting ended, the officer told me they’d increase security around the dormitory.
I nodded.
It wasn’t enough.
I knew that.
But it was something.
— When we stepped outside, Asher was silent.
I looked at him.
“You’re angry.” “No.” “You are.” “I’m thinking.” “About what?” He stopped walking.
“About how long you’ve been dealing with this alone.” I looked down.
“I didn’t want anyone to know.” “Why?” “Because…” My voice became quieter.
“I was ashamed.” His expression changed.
“Kael.” I looked up.
“There is nothing about what happened to you that you should be ashamed of.” My eyes burned.
“He used to tell me I was useless.” Asher’s jaw tightened.
“He said nobody would want me.” I laughed bitterly.
“I believed him.” Asher stepped closer.
“He was wrong.” I looked at him.
“He was wrong about everything.” My eyes filled.
“Asher…” He gently pulled me into his arms.
I didn’t resist.
I buried my face against his chest.
His hand rested against the back of my head.
“You hear me?” I nodded.
“You’re not useless.” Another nod.
“You’re not unwanted.” My fingers tightened around his shirt.
“And you’re not alone anymore.” That was the sentence that finally broke me.
I started crying.
Not loudly.
Just quiet tears against his shirt.
Asher didn’t tell me to stop.
He didn’t tell me to be strong.
He simply held me.
— The rest of the day passed strangely.
I expected everyone to know.
They didn’t.
Classes continued normally.
Students complained about assignments.
Professors gave lectures.
People laughed in the hallways.
Life continued as if nothing had happened.
But for me…
Everything felt different.
I kept checking over my shoulder.
Every unfamiliar face made my stomach tighten.
Every tall man in the distance made my heart race.
Asher noticed.
He stayed beside me all day.
At lunch, he sat across from me.
During class, he chose the seat closest to me.
When we walked between buildings…
His hand occasionally brushed against mine.
Small things.
But they helped.
— That evening, Asher had to go to work.
I didn’t want him to.
But I didn’t say it.
He stood by the door with his backpack.
“I’ll be back before midnight.” I nodded.
“Okay.” He studied me.
“You’ll be alright?” I forced a smile.
“Yes.” He didn’t believe me.
I knew he didn’t.
He walked toward me.
Then stopped.
His hand gently touched my cheek.
“Call me if anything happens.” “I will.” “Anything.” “I promise.” He looked into my eyes for a long moment.
Then leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to my forehead.
My cheeks immediately warmed.
“Don’t worry.” He stepped away.
I caught his sleeve.
He looked down.
“…Come back soon.” His expression softened.
“I will.” Then he left.
— That night…
I tried everything.
Reading.
Watching a movie.
Listening to music.
Nothing worked.
Eventually, I sat on my bed with my knees pulled up.
I looked at the clock.
10:47.
He wasn’t home yet.
I told myself not to worry.
Then— 11:02.
Still nothing.
I picked up my phone.
No message.
My chest tightened.
I typed: Are you okay?
I stared at the message.
Then sent it.
Nothing.
Five minutes passed.
Ten.
Then finally— Asher: I’m okay.
Running late.
I sighed with relief.
Kael: Okay.
A moment later: Asher: Go to sleep.
I smiled.
Kael: No.
Three dots appeared.
Asher: Rabbit.
I laughed quietly.
Kael: Come home first.
His reply took longer.
Then: Asher: I will.
I put my phone down.
For some reason…
I believed him.
— Nearly an hour later, the dormitory door opened.
Asher walked inside.
I immediately sat up.
He looked exhausted.
His jacket was hanging loosely from one shoulder.
He dropped his bag.
Then looked at me.
“You waited.” I nodded.
“You told me to sleep.” “You didn’t listen.” “No.” He smiled.
I stood.
Before I could think about it…
I walked toward him.
Then wrapped my arms around his waist.
Asher froze.
I froze too.
I’d never hugged him first like this.
Not deliberately.
My face burned.
“I…” I almost pulled away.
His arms immediately came around me.
He held me close.
“It’s okay.” I rested my cheek against his chest.
“I missed you.” The words came out quietly.
Asher’s hand moved slowly through my hair.
“I missed you too.” My heart skipped.
We stayed like that for a while.
No teasing.
No jokes.
Just warmth.
Just quiet.
Just us.
— Neither of us noticed the car parked across the street.
A man sat inside.
His eyes were fixed on the dormitory.
On the window above.
On the room where Kael lived.
His fingers tightened around the steering wheel.
Then he smiled.
“Found you.” And inside the dorm…
Kael remained safely in Asher’s arms.
For now.
