Sleep Early

Mu Bai stomped hard on the middle-aged man’s head, again and again, his small face burning red with fury as he cursed between each stomp.

He had never in his short existence heard someone speak with such venom, such sheer cruelty, hurling curses meant to wound a person’s soul.

No wonder his new target hadn’t been able to sleep last night.Full novel: Sleep Early — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

So that was why behind the walls where no one could see, his target had been enduring such treatment.

By the time midnight came, Mu Bai had already made up his mind. He was going to hang himself upside down on that man’s ceiling and give him the fright of his life. That kind of person deserved no less.

Unable to hold back his anger, Mu Bai’s cheeks puffed and reddened even more. He jumped up and down furiously, delivering several more heavy stomps on the man’s head.

The echo of each impact bounced through the empty parking lot, mingling with the man’s still-raging voice.

Even as the guards dragged him back, the middle-aged man struggled and punched wildly, spitting one vicious insult after another.

Inside the sleek black Maybach, the engine had already roared to life, ready to drive off toward the exit of the underground garage.

But after moving only a few meters, a calm, low voice from the backseat said, “Stop.”

The driver’s foot slammed on the brake, halting the car just in time.

Yan He turned his head, his dark eyes shifting toward the window. Outside, he saw the little ghost, his little ghost flying like a cannonball across the air, stomping angrily on the man’s head while shouting in outrage.

He, the victim of those words, had not even been angry. Not once had he raised an eyelid or given the other man even a glance.

His indifference had been complete, almost frightening in its calm.

And yet the tiny creature who usually napped so obediently against his back had exploded in fury the moment those words were spoken.

It was as though the little ghost could not tolerate anyone speaking ill of him.

Yan He’s throat moved slightly; he stared at the scene in silence. The sight of that normally docile little being defending him so fiercely on his behalf, no less, was oddly unfamiliar.

The driver, unsure what was happening, kept glancing toward the rearview mirror. He didn’t understand why his usually decisive boss had stopped the car only to listen to someone hurl curses.

Even Secretary Du Ping, standing nearby, broke into a cold sweat. He watched in disbelief as the black Maybach remained motionless, parked not far from the struggling man.

And then, Yan He lowered the car window.

He didn’t speak; he simply looked at the scene outside, at the middle-aged man being dragged away by security, and at the furious little ghost bouncing in the air.

Strangely, his expression didn’t look angry at all.

He just watched.

Finally, when the little ghost had vented enough of his anger, Yan He pressed a button and lowered the window all the way, so the ghost could return.

Mu Bai, still fuming, turned his head and saw the Maybach waiting for him not far away.

Instantly, his red-tinted face brightened. He didn’t have to float home by himself after all. In a blur of motion, he shot through the air with a soft whoosh, slipping neatly back into the car.

Once the little ghost was safely inside, Yan He raised the window again and said lightly, “Let’s go.”

The driver answered quickly, started the engine once more, and sped out of that troublesome place as fast as he could.

Inside the car, Mu Bai sat cross-legged on the seat, sneaking worried glances toward his “new target.” His little face was full of concern, as though afraid that the man beside him might be upset by those hateful words.

So, he did what he always did, stuck close.

When Yan He sat in the car, he sat right next to him, legs folded neatly, just watching him. When Yan He got out of the car, he floated beside him rather than clinging to his back.

Even when they passed the motion-sensor lights along the path, Mu Bai grew anxious that they might not turn on.

He flew up to the lampposts, tapping and knocking until the lights flickered to life again, determined to keep the path bright for the man walking below.

Yan He went through his nightly routine as always, returning home, taking a shower, drying his hair, and then heading to bed early.

Mu Bai perched on the bed, twisting his head slightly to watch him with wide, bright eyes.

When Yan He lifted his gaze, the first thing he saw was the little ghost’s face, brimming with quiet worry.

A faint, helpless smile tugged at his lips.

Long ago, he’d heard words far crueler than those spoken tonight, words hurled directly into his face. He was long past being shaken by them.

But the little ghost didn’t know that.

The tiny creature still seemed distressed, stewing over what had happened, as if his heart couldn’t settle. From the moment they returned home, he had hovered at Yan He’s side, gloomy and frowning, too anxious to leave.

Even when Yan He turned on his favorite show, the one that always cheered him up, still the little ghost only sat quietly on the sofa.

He’d glance at the screen for a few seconds, then lift his head again to look at Yan He, checking if he was all right.

At last, Yan He set aside the book in his hands and picked up his phone.

He dialed a number.

“Du Ping,” he said when the call connected, his tone as steady as ever. “What happened to that man who caused trouble earlier, Li Zhi?”

Du Ping’s voice came quickly on the other end. “We’ve already called the police, sir. They’ve taken him away for disturbing the peace.”

Yan He’s eyes shifted toward the little ghost sitting beside him, who was now propped on his hands, watching him anxiously. “So the police have already taken him away?” he repeated, voice still calm.

“Yes, sir. He’s been detained.”

Yan He gave a faint nod. The corner of his lips barely moved as he added, still in that same mild tone, “Good. The bad man’s been caught, then.”

“That means I can finally sleep peacefully tonight.”

Du Ping: “…Huh?”

For a long second, the secretary just stared blankly at the phone in his hand, half-convinced he’d misheard. He even checked the caller ID to make sure.

It was Mr. Yan.

But why on earth was his famously cold, decisive boss saying something that sounded like he was coaxing a child to sleep?

‘The bad man’s been caught. Now I can rest easy.’

Mr. Yan… had a child? Since when?

None of the secretaries had heard anything about this!

His mind exploded with a dozen questions, but before he could say another word, Yan He’s composed voice came again through the phone:

“You’ve worked hard tonight. Double your bonus this month.”

Then the call ended.

The line went dead, leaving Du Ping staring at his screen, stunned into silence.

Back in the quiet bedroom, Yan He turned to see the little ghost’s delighted expression. Mu Bai was whispering cheerfully to himself, “Serves him right! Bad people always get what they deserve.”

A faint smile tugged at Yan He’s lips, softer this time.

When Mu Bai heard him say with his own mouth that he could sleep peacefully tonight, all the worry drained from his small face.

He let out a tiny yawn, then flopped down beside the man, curling up under the blanket as if settling in for the night.

As his head brushed against the soft quilt, a sleepy thought drifted through his mind, something felt a little off.

Why did the bed feel bigger than before… yet the blanket somehow shorter?

He squirmed closer toward the man, and only when he pressed up against him did the blanket finally cover him fully.

Mu Bai didn’t think much of it. He simply lay there, eyes half-open, watching the man before him who tonight, for the first time, wasn’t sleeping with his back turned.

Instead, Yan He had rolled over, facing him. Their eyes met in the dim light, breath mingling quietly between them.

Their noses were nearly touching.

It seemed the man wasn’t quite asleep yet. His eyes remained half-open, dark and clear, quietly fixed on some point ahead, as though deep in thought.

Mu Bai blinked his round eyes and, taking advantage of the fact that the man couldn’t see him, inched closer.

Their noses were now only a breath apart. He tilted his head curiously, studying the man’s face from up close, then whispered in awe, “Such long eyelashes…”

His mother used to say that people with long eyelashes were born blessed, with good fortune following them through life.

Unable to resist, Mu Bai reached out a pale finger, his curiosity burning brighter with every second. He lowered his hand and gently brushed the tips of those dark lashes, letting them tickle his fingertips.

As he played with them, he began to count softly under his breath.

Yan He’s throat moved ever so slightly.

The little ghost clearly had no idea what he was doing, his cold fingertip brushing over the man’s lashes, their noses almost pressed together as he muttered numbers in a hushed, serious tone.

The sight was… unbearably cute.

Up close, his face looked tiny, small enough that a single palm could cover most of it. His eyes were almond-shaped, their corners naturally round, and the lashes at the ends curled delicately upward.

Sometimes, when he yawned, his lashes would clump together into little damp tufts, making him look even more obedient and soft.

When Mu Bai’s curiosity reached its peak and his hand began to drift toward the man’s nose, Yan He suddenly gave a low cough.

Startled, the little ghost froze. His hand shot back like lightning. He looked up cautiously, stealing a quick glance at the man across from him.

Yan He’s expression was calm, he seemed to be looking at the bedside lamp rather than at him. There was no sign he’d noticed anything unusual.

Mu Bai exhaled in relief and muttered under his breath, “Fine then… if you don’t want me to touch it, I won’t…”

But after a moment of silence, he couldn’t resist sneaking in two more light pokes.

“Hmph. Not that special anyway,” he whispered petulantly.

“Looks tall and sharp, but it feels just like mine.”

After that, he gave another small yawn, his voice trailing off into drowsy hums. Soon enough, the little ghost’s eyelids drooped, and he fell asleep, earlier than the man himself.

Yan He turned his head slightly, eyes resting on the small, curled-up figure beside his pillow. The faint light of the night lamp brushed across Mu Bai’s peaceful sleeping face.

He reached out, tugged gently at the blanket, and carefully pulled it up over the little ghost’s shoulders before switching off the lamp and closing his eyes to sleep.

Around two in the morning.

Mu Bai woke up.

He sat up instantly, his movements brisk and practiced. After nibbling on a bit of spiritual energy for a boost, he scrambled up onto the window sill and floated right through the glass.

Hovering in midair, he twitched his nose like a small animal sniffing the wind. Very quickly, he caught the foul scent of that same middle-aged man who had caused the scene in the parking lot earlier.

Without hesitation, Mu Bai darted off into the night, gliding swiftly toward the city’s other end.

At around three a.m.

Inside a detention cell, the man, Li Zhi was snoring loudly, his heavy body sprawled over the narrow bed. His snores rumbled like thunder, shaking the silence of the cell.

But midway through his sleep, a chill ran down his spine. He frowned and scratched at his neck, then rolled over with a grunt and went right back to snoring.

Except… the right side of his body was getting colder and colder.

An icy wind seemed to slither in from nowhere, crawling along his skin and seeping into his collar.

Li Zhi’s eyes snapped open.

He gasped at the freezing sensation, anger flaring immediately. Just as he was about to curse out loud, the metal door of the cell gave a slow, eerie creak.

There was no wind.

But the door moved, rattling softly in the dead silence of the night.

The sound echoed through the pitch-black room. Creak… creak… creak…

Li Zhi’s voice died in his throat. His heart hammered violently against his ribs as he stared at the quivering door, sweat beading cold and wet on his forehead.

Then something even worse.

Across the dimly lit floor, faint shadows began to flicker, one after another, darting and twisting too fast to see clearly. A sharp, biting cold swept across his side as if invisible fingers brushed against his neck.

Li Zhi stumbled back against the wall, his body trembling. He tried to shout, to call for help but before a sound could escape, the fluorescent light above began to flicker violently.

And then, he saw it.

From the corner of his eye, it looked like a human head hanging upside down from the flickering lamp.

The next second, his terrified scream split the air, echoing down the concrete hallways of the detention center.

On the lamp, the little ghost snickered quietly. He pulled off the black plastic bag he’d wrapped around his own head earlier and, still grinning mischievously, hooked it onto the light before floating away.

Before leaving, Mu Bai couldn’t resist bouncing a few times on the man’s head, just for good measure. Only then did he sneak out through the window, vanishing into the early dawn.

The next morning, ten o’clock.

Yan He, as usual, was calmly reviewing documents in his office when a knock sounded at the door. His secretary, Du Ping, entered, looking hesitant but clearly holding back something important.

Yan He didn’t lift his head. “What is it?”

Du Ping swallowed and spoke carefully.

“Sir, about that incident last night… The detention center called. Apparently, Mr. Li caused quite a commotion around midnight.”

Yan He flipped another page of the report, his expression unreadable.

Du Ping continued cautiously,

“He was crying and shouting that there was a ghost in his cell that someone was trying to kill him. He kept saying you sent some evil spirit to take revenge. He even threatened that once he’s released, he’ll expose everything to the media.”

Yan He finally raised his head, his tone as calm as still water, “File a lawsuit for defamation.”

Du Ping blinked, then nodded quickly. “Yes, sir.”

He was about to leave when Yan He suddenly frowned, as though remembering something else.

“Wait,” he said. “Buy some pomelo leaves. Have them boiled into water.”

Du Ping froze, momentarily confused. Then it dawned on him.

“Ah…. Of course. Should I have the cleansing water sprinkled in the underground parking lot? To dispel bad luck?”

After all, that was where the disturbance had happened yesterday.

But Yan He shook his head, “No.”

His tone softened, faint amusement flickering in his eyes, “Just have the pomelo water ready. I’ll take it home.”

The little ghost had gone somewhere unclean last night and even stomped on something filthy. It was only right to help him wash away the lingering bad energy.
