The man in the black shirt crouched halfway down, one hand braced against the wardrobe door. His gaze fell on the boy fast asleep inside, buried under a pile of clothes.
The boy was sleeping soundly, curled against a light gray suit jacket that blended with the dull gray robe he wore.
Inside the wardrobe, the clothes were neatly arranged from dark to light.
When the little ghost had crawled in to hide, he’d even been meticulous enough to choose a spot where the colors matched his own robe.
Yan He stood there watching for a long while.
At last, he quietly closed the wardrobe door, trapping the faint scent of the boy within, then picked up his pajamas and headed to the bathroom.
The sound of rushing water soon echoed through the apartment.
Inside the wardrobe, the little ghost stirred at the noise, half awake.
He yawned lazily and then suddenly froze mid-yawn as if remembering something, quickly stifling it back.
His eyes darted to the narrow crack in the wardrobe door, peeking cautiously outside.
From inside, the crack revealed almost nothing.
Mu Bai thought for a moment, then snatched the closest suit jacket light gray and wrapped himself tightly, covering his head so that only his eyes and nose peeked out.
Moving cautiously, he nudged the door open and poked his head out to survey the bedroom.
Good.
The room was spotless. No talismans plastered to the walls, no bowls of black dog’s blood.
It looked like that bald monk hadn’t given his “new target” any charms or protections at all.
Relieved, Mu Bai quickly unwrapped the jacket from around his head.
See? That bald fraud with eight burn scars on his scalp was nothing more than a charlatan.
Even ordinary swindlers usually left their clients a few fake talismans or told them to buy pomelo water and dog’s blood for peace of mind. But that monk had provided nothing at all.
Good thing Yan He’s “haunting” was him, a considerate bed-pressing ghost.
If it had been another kind of spirit, a real vicious one, then poor Yan He who didn’t know the first thing beyond calling swindlers, would probably have been devoured until not even his bones remained.
Sighing in pity, the little ghost drifted toward the bathroom. Truly, Yan He was lucky to have met him.
Inside, the man had just finished his shower. Standing before the mirror, he switched on the hair dryer.
But the moment he lifted his head, he saw in the mirror behind him, a ghost.
The little ghost leaned out, his gaze surprisingly deep. In those glossy dark almond eyes was pity, compassion and even a strange sort of brotherly loyalty.
Yan He: “…?”
What the hell just happened?
Meanwhile, Mu Bai was lost in solemn thought. Thank goodness it was him who had entered this house.
A ghost like him, who worried about pressing too hard and only laying lightly on people for a few hours a night, was rare indeed.
Yes. Truly rare. They were perfect together!
The moment the thought crossed his mind, the solemn little ghost grinned, hopping up onto the sink counter and swinging his legs happily.
Yan He continued drying his hair, but his eyes lingered on the ghost in the mirror.
The boy’s smile was curved, bright, almost mischievous! So different from the nervous creature who had clung to the window earlier, hidden in the wardrobe, and buried himself in Yan He’s clothes.
But now, after realizing that the bald monk was a fraud, Mu Bai no longer bothered to hide. He could even perch openly on the sink or better yet, throw himself directly onto his new target.
Yan He: “…”
He watched in silence as the ghost floated up and latched onto him, peering down at his head.
When Yan He wasn’t paying attention, the ghost sneaked in a few cheeky pats through his hair.
No burn scars.
A good head indeed.
Satisfied, the restless little ghost quickly pulled his hand back, pretending nothing had happened as he hung onto the man’s shoulders.
Ever since realizing the “master” was a fraud, Mu Bai had grown bolder. Confident that no one could detect him, he no longer even wanted to walk on his own.
Clinging to Yan He, he hooked both arms around the man’s neck and rested his cheek against him, eyelids drooping.
In the mirror, Yan He saw the ghost sprawled across his back, arms looped around his neck, yawning drowsily.
The boy’s hair was soft and messy, sticking up in tufts. His half-lidded almond eyes curved like slivers of moonlight, and faint yawning noises escaped his lips.
After finishing his yawn, Mu Bai tilted his head curiously. Why hadn’t the man left after drying his hair?
Hanging there, he peeked out from behind Yan He’s shoulder, eyes meeting the reflection in the mirror.
A ghost had no body and no weight. Yet Yan He felt a strange heaviness on his shoulders, as though there truly was a boy clinging to him, pressing all his weight onto him.
He stood frozen in front of the mirror for several minutes before setting down the dryer and leaving the bathroom.
Though intangible, the ghost was too close; Yan He could clearly sense the fluctuations of cold yin energy.
Sometimes it pressed heavily on his shoulder when the boy leaned against him; other times it lifted lightly when curiosity drew him to glance around.
From bathroom to bedroom, Yan He could tell without even needing the mirror that how many times the ghost craned his neck to look at something.
The wall-mounted fish tank. The night-light. All things that caught the little ghost’s curiosity.
Once in the bedroom, the chill vanished from Yan He’s back. He lifted his gaze and saw the boy dart eagerly toward the pale gray bed.
Mu Bai rolled happily across it twice before settling down, grinning from ear to ear.
He truly was delighted. He’d thought that bald monk’s arrival meant he’d go hungry tonight.
Who would have guessed he’d not only eaten but also scored a bed to roll on?
Now that the fraud was gone, didn’t this mean he could go back to eating well every night, just like before?
His new target was obedient, considerate, only a little timid.
That must be why Yan He had hired the fraud after Mu Bai had hidden away the robot vacuum a few nights back.
But that was no big deal. If Yan He was scared, Mu Bai simply wouldn’t frighten him anymore. He’d even cut down the bed-pressing time.
Thoughtful to the extreme, Mu Bai sprawled across the bed, watching the man reading nearby. Truly, in all the world, you wouldn’t find another ghost as considerate as him!
By three in the morning, though, the little ghost had to rouse himself. He’d only just fallen into a deep, comfortable sleep after a full meal, but a promise was a promise, less bed-pressing tonight.
Hair tousled, eyes barely open, he dragged himself up, floated to the window, and crawled out clumsily toward the graveyard where he usually lingered during the day.
At half past three, Yan He jolted awake from the cold.
This time it was worse than before. not just one side of the bed, but his whole body freezing, like he’d lain in the wind all night.
Switching on the night-light, he found the bed empty. The ghost was gone. So was the blanket.
The sheets were wrinkled, a long drag mark leading down the bed like a fish tail slipping off the edge and vanishing.
He remembered how the boy often cocooned himself in the blanket, sometimes rolling around until even he couldn’t move.
Most likely, half-asleep, he had dragged the blanket back with him.
Pressing his brow, Yan He got up, opened the wardrobe, and pulled out a spare silk quilt.
At nine in the morning, outside the city, the graveyard lay beneath heavy trees. Wind whispered through branches, scattering dead leaves.
Mu Bai stirred, hugging the blanket tight. Half-asleep, he rubbed his chin against it.
Soft. Silky. Warm. He buried his face into it with a happy sigh, rubbing again.
Two minutes later, realization hit.
His eyes snapped open wide. He sat up, hair sticking up in all directions, staring at the quilt in his arms.
He was a ghost. He had been dead for centuries. Where had this blanket come from?!
Lowering his head, he saw clearly. It was indeed the very quilt from his new target’s home.
But that bald monk had sworn there were no ghosts in that house!
Mu Bai trembled, shutting his eyes in horror. He could already picture his timid new target sitting in the living room again, serving tea to yet another fraud.
“Master, the last one was useless. Now the quilt’s gone too. Could you check again if this place is haunted?”
Last night, he had thought joyfully that he had finally secured a reliable meal.
But before he could even warm his bowl, he had smashed it himself! Bowl and food both gone.
Meanwhile, across town in a high-rise office, Yan He leaned back in his chair. His long legs crossed beneath his tailored black suit.
Speaking into the phone, he instructed his assistant, “Order two new sets of bedding. Same style as the light gray silk one.”
The assistant agreed readily, asking if anything else should be replaced.
After a pause, Yan He added, “Get me a bigger bed. But don’t bother with pillows.”
After all, the weightless little ghost always preferred to nap draped across him. Pillow or not, it made no difference.
