The resentful ghost hand, kicked aside, didn’t dare move again. It shrank under the sofa, waiting for an opportunity.

Yan He glanced at the little ghost on the sofa, expression unreadable.

The little ghost didn’t notice anything unusual. He reached carefully into his pocket and pulled out a small, plump pouch.Full novel: Sleep Early — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Yan He tilted his head to look and saw that the pouch was a pink sachet.

The pink sachet was embroidered with a pair of mandarin ducks playing in water, exquisitely crafted. The ducks almost seemed alive. Whoever had gifted this must have been a thoughtful little girl.

The little ghost treasured the pouch dearly, handling it with utmost care, barely daring to touch it more than necessary.

He held the pouch on the sofa, his snow-white cheeks revealing a small dimple as he tilted his head to look at Yan He, eager and impatient.

Yan He suddenly tossed his book aside, expression calm and stomped on the ghost hand that had been trying to crawl out from under the sofa.

The resentful hand froze for a moment, then was quickly pressed back under the sofa. This time, it stayed put, too scared to reemerge.

Yan He stood up and headed toward the bedroom.

As expected, the little ghost followed but not as closely as before.

In the past, the little ghost would even sit on the glass door, attentively waiting while Yan He bathed, like a little tail faithfully trailing behind.

Now, the little ghost didn’t seem interested in following him around. He sprawled on the light-gray bed, propping his chin with one hand, playing with the mandarin-duck sachet.

He rolled around comfortably on the soft bed, no longer staring at Yan He with wide, sparkling eyes.

Yan He carried his fresh sleepwear into the bathroom. Before closing the door, he glanced at the little ghost a few times. The ghost didn’t follow this time.

In the bedroom, Mu Bai happily rolled around on the bed. After a few rolls, he lifted his head and realized the bed seemed bigger than before.

Sure enough, aside from being a bit timid, his new target was perfect: sensible, obedient, and even upgraded the bed!

Mu Bai was thrilled. Even when he touched the sachet, he no longer felt guilty about the incense he’d spent.

Outside, faint rustling noises came from the door. A ghost hand slowly crawled out from under the sofa.

Even with only a severed hand, it dared not enter the man’s bedroom, circling outside instead.

But before long, the resentful hand noticed the little ghost happily rolling on the bed inside.

It froze in place.

This hand was the lingering resentment of the previous evil ghost, inheriting some of its memories. It knew Yan He’s bedroom was a place that even the most fearsome ghosts dared not step into.

And yet, there was a little ghost comfortably playing on the bed in Yan He’s room.

The ghost hand’s resentment surged like a tide, driving it to crawl toward the bathroom.

Inside, mist curled around the room. Yan He, having finished his shower, wiped his hair and caught a faint whiff of decay.

His expression immediately darkened. The lingering resentment of the earlier evil ghost hadn’t been fully eradicated.

Yan He pushed open the glass bathroom door and, sure enough, saw large bloodstains smeared across the mirror through the lingering mist.

As the mist dissipated, the dense, twisted blood writing became clear, grotesque and dripping with malice.

It wasn’t the terrifying handprints of before, but countless, cramped, twisted characters:

“Why can he go to bed? why can he go to bed? why can he go to bed? why can he go to bed? ”

Yan He: “…”

At first, he didn’t quite understand. But when he saw the characters for “go to bed,” he immediately realized what it meant.

The ghost hand was originally the lingering resentment of the slain evil ghost, easily feeding on negative emotions.

Without a brain, it carried the pain of being strangled, its malice crawling toward the bedroom like a dark tide.

But it hadn’t even moved two steps before Yan He stomped it flat. Using the prayer beads, he strangled it into a wisp of white smoke that vanished into the air.

The blood writing on the bathroom mirror slowly faded as well, restoring everything to its original state.

Yan He opened the window to air out the room. Seeing the damp trail of the ghost hand crawling across the floor, he frowned involuntarily.

One crawls around on the floor, the other “goes to bed.” So is it really strange to let the second little ghost sleep in the bed?

Returning to the bedroom, Yan He found the little ghost obediently lying on the bed, propping his chin with one hand and swinging his legs, waiting.

The little ghost didn’t touch anything, simply playing with his sachet. He was very well-behaved.

Probably never went out much in life. His pale skin, usually hidden under the gray, dusty robe, was now exposed in the sleeve slipping down to his elbow. One smooth, white arm gleamed in the soft light.

Yan He’s gaze fell on the pink sachet in the little ghost’s hands, and he paused for a moment.

The little ghost had been staring at the sachet before Yan He’s bath. Now, he still looked at the pink mandarin-duck sachet, clearly treasuring it.

And he truly did. After all, he had spent two sticks of incense to obtain it.

Mu Bai held the sachet carefully, solemnly unwrapped it, revealing the rhino horn tip inside, which he respectfully placed on the bedside table.

He set the rhino horn tip, then climbed onto the bed and bowed devoutly, hoping it would work its magic.

Like his mother, he was superstitious. As a child, his body was weak. His mother had even donated a gilded statue in the temple for him.

Now, as a little ghost in the underworld, he couldn’t worship Buddha or Bodhisattvas, and dared not pray to King Fengdu either, afraid he’d accidentally summon the dark and fickle yin-yang spirits.

After some thought, Mu Bai concluded that if he couldn’t pray elsewhere, at least he could bow to the rhino horn tip.

Yan He watched as the little ghost carefully unpacked the sachet. He had expected herbs, ice chips, or medicinal ingredients but the little girl who gifted it had sent a rhino horn tip instead.

Yan He’s expression shifted slightly.

Not only that, the little ghost had arranged the rhino horn in the bedroom and bowed to it devoutly, mumbling prayers and chanting quietly, looking almost mystical.

After finishing, Mu Bai climbed onto the bed and, as usual, lay at the head, waiting for Yan He to fall asleep.

By the middle of the night, Mu Bai realized the long-tongued ghost hadn’t lied to him.

The rhino horn tip really worked.

The man lying in bed slept as usual, not coughing at all during the night, resting soundly.

Mu Bai was extremely pleased. Before leaving, he even made sure to place the rhino horn tip in the center of the bedside table.

The next morning, Yan He woke up and upon getting up, noticed the ugly rhino horn tip sitting on the bedside table.

It was positioned in the most prominent, central spot, like a small treasure displayed for everyone to see.

At first, Yan He thought the little ghost had forgotten to take it last night.

But next to the rhino horn tip was the pink mandarin-duck sachet.

Judging from how much the little ghost had treasured the sachet the night before. It was probably not forgotten, it was deliberately left there.

Yan He’s expression shifted slightly. He reached out to touch the rhino horn tip and found it completely clean, with no lingering yin energy.

In the past, many evil ghosts left things in his house.

But those things were mostly poisonous or malicious, all meant to harm him.

Looking at the rhino horn tip, it didn’t seem like something that could stir up any dark mischief.

Yan He could have simply burned it with his prayer beads, but recalling how devoutly the little ghost had bowed to it, he decided instead to send a message to Hong Hui at the temple, planning to ask about it later.

That evening, Yan He went to Zhongming Temple on the outskirts of the city.

The dense branches nearly hid the stone steps, and the faded red temple gate exuded an air of desolate quiet, with only a few monks cleaning the courtyard.

He walked toward the back door of the temple and soon saw Hong Hui waiting for him in the hall.

Hong Hui greeted him with a smile. He rotated his prayer beads, about to speak, but then paused.

Before Yan He could say anything, Hong Hui sighed: “Master was right.”

“The prayer beads in your hand won’t wait for him to return from his journey.”

Yan He paused slightly, glancing at the beads on his wrist. His rosewood prayer beads consisted of eight beads in total.

Each bead represented one of the Eightfold Paths: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration.

Having been used for long-term evil-ghost suppression, the first seven beads already bore tiny cracks. The final bead also cracked last night while restraining the evil ghost.

Yan He’s extremely yin-sensitive body reacted sharply to yin energy. These beads weren’t only for protection but they were also meant to suppress and isolate yin energy.

Hong Hui held up the rosewood beads, studying them carefully in the light before speaking gravely: “The cracks are severe. It’ll take some time to repair them.”

Yan He hummed in acknowledgment, expression calm as ever.

Hong Hui sighed: “Well, I can’t stop you from restraining evil ghosts and punishing karmic offenders. Just be careful with the measurements.”

Yan He despised being threatened.

Many evil ghosts had assumed that since he couldn’t fully punish karmic offenders, they could repeatedly provoke him. In the end, they could only watch as their bodies were reduced to ashes.

Hong Hui collected the beads and handed Yan He some talismans, cautioning: “With the beads not on you these few days, be extra careful.”

Yan He took the talismans and simply said, “Thanks.”

Hong Hui shook his head with a smile: “I only gave these talismans because of the face you showed me. In talent, you’re far superior.”

After storing the beads, Hong Hui asked before leaving, “By the way, how’s that little ghost recently?”

Yan He was silent for a moment, seemingly unsure where to start.

He had come for this matter originally, but had been sidetracked by the beads, and hadn’t asked yet.

After some time, Yan He finally asked out of the blue: “Do you know what rhino horn tips are generally used for?”

Hong Hui stroked his chin, pondering before replying: “Rhino horn can be used medicinally. For young ones, it helps stabilize the essence and calm the mind.”

“Though most rhino horn medicine is for boosting yang and tonifying the kidneys. Why are you asking about this all of a sudden?”

Yan He: “…”

He recalled the little ghost carefully placing the treasured rhino horn tip on the bedside table. Every night, he bowed to it devoutly, looking extremely pious.

So, was the little ghost praying to the rhino horn to boost his yang and kidney energy?

Yan He was silent for a long while, eventually accepting the situation.

Every night, the little ghost devoutly prayed to the rhino horn tip, hoping it would enhance his yang and kidney health.

As if remembering something, Hong Hui, holding the prayer beads, reminded him: “By the way…. ”

“With the beads not on you these days, be careful of that little ghost pressing down on the bed.”

His meaning was clear: without the beads, and given Yan He’s extreme yin-sensitivity, the little ghost pressing on him at midnight is essentially no different from a human.

Yan He barely paid it any mind, just acknowledging the talismans with a casual response
