“But this place actually seems pretty safe. When we came over here earlier, we didn’t encounter a single zombie,” Ke Haiyang remarked.
The more he looked around, the more satisfied he became with the location. In fact, he was already considering asking Qin Yueming to return to their previous hiding place and bring the others here as well.
After thinking about it carefully, Luo Xinxin realized he was right, so she stopped complaining.
By then, Lin Mingmei had already slid down from Gao Lang’s back. She quietly stretched her arms and legs, loosening the stiffness in her body caused entirely by forcing herself to endure his touch for so long.
Suddenly, Zhang Rui covered her mouth in shock.
“You’re not even injured?!”
Lin Mingmei frowned slightly.
“Who said I was injured?”
“Then if you’re perfectly fine, why did you let Student Gao Lang carry you all the way here?” Zhang Rui stared at her in disbelief. “How, how can you behave like this?”
“It’s alright,” Gao Lang interrupted generously. “I’m not tired.”
“As if you aren’t tired. You carried her all this way,” Luo Xinxin pouted unhappily.
Gao Lang immediately gave her a reassuring smile.
Zhang Rui looked back and forth between the two girls. Suddenly, realization flashed across her face as she glared at Lin Mingmei with obvious contempt.
“So she’s a homewrecker,” she muttered disdainfully. “Absolutely shameless.”
Lin Mingmei slowly lifted her eyes and smiled faintly.
“You’re absolutely right. Every homewrecker in this world is shameless beyond belief.”
Zhang Rui instantly exploded.
“Who are you calling a homewrecker?!”
Lin Mingmei blinked in confusion.
She had clearly been indirectly insulting Luo Xinxin, so why was Zhang Rui getting this angry?
“Mingmei, stop chatting already,” Gao Lang interrupted impatiently while looking around the room. “This classroom is filthy. Hurry up and clean it a little.”
As usual, he naturally assigned work to Lin Mingmei without hesitation.
Lin Mingmei lowered her eyes and pretended she had heard absolutely nothing.
“Gao Lang, I’m hungry,” Luo Xinxin whined pitifully while tugging his sleeve. “So hungry…”
Actually, Gao Lang himself was starving too, but he still patiently comforted her.
“Be good for now. Let’s settle down here first, then we’ll figure out a way to find food.”
“But I want to eat now,” Luo Xinxin complained with a pout.
At that moment, Ke Haiyang suddenly spoke.
“The cafeteria food is completely gone already. Everyone’s heading toward the campus supermarket to search for instant food and bottled water. But there are too many people over there now, so it’s packed with zombies too. A lot of students have already died or gotten injured. Nobody can get close anymore.”
“Exactly,” Zhang Rui added miserably. “This horrible school has become impossible to survive in.”
The situation sounded grim.
Gao Lang and Luo Xinxin instinctively turned toward Qin Yueming.
Qin Yueming frowned deeply.
“The situation outside the school isn’t much better.”
“What?!” Zhang Rui panicked instantly. “Then what are we supposed to do?”
Meanwhile, Ke Haiyang looked troubled, clearly hesitating about something while glancing repeatedly toward Qin Yueming.
Qin Yueming noticed immediately.
“Do you want to say something?”
Ke Haiyang bit his lip.
“Brother Qin… I have a presumptuous request.”
“Ke Haiyang!” Zhang Rui interrupted sharply. “Don’t speak recklessly. What if Brother Qin gets dragged into danger because of you?”
Ke Haiyang frowned deeply.
“Zhang Rui, someone’s life is on the line!”
Everyone else looked completely confused.
Why were the two of them suddenly arguing?
Realizing Ke Haiyang was genuinely angry, Zhang Rui finally shut her mouth resentfully.
Only then did Ke Haiyang turn back toward Qin Yueming.
“My younger sister suddenly developed a high fever last night and has completely fallen unconscious. Zhang Rui and I only went out to search for medicine because of her…” His voice grew desperate. “Brother Qin, could you please help me rescue her?”
A fever?
Lin Mingmei’s ears instantly perked up.
Qin Yueming immediately asked,
“How long has she been burning up?”
“Since last night.” Ke Haiyang’s expression grew increasingly anxious. “I truly had no other choice, which is why I risked coming out. If this continues any longer, I’m afraid she might die…”
Before he could finish speaking, Gao Lang suddenly interrupted.
“Brother Yueming probably can’t help you.”
Ke Haiyang froze.
“Why not?”
“The person Brother Yueming is responsible for protecting is Xinxin,” Gao Lang explained calmly.
Luo Xinxin nodded immediately in agreement.
The outside world was far too dangerous right now. Nothing could happen to Qin Yueming because she still needed him to escort her home safely.
“But Brother Qin just saved us earlier too!” Ke Haiyang argued anxiously. “Brother Qin, you’re a soldier. Aren’t soldiers supposed to protect ordinary civilians like us?”
Luo Xinxin instantly jumped up in anger.
“How can you say that? That’s moral blackmail!”
“I’m not trying to morally blackmail anyone,” Ke Haiyang said hurriedly. “I just…”
Before he could continue, Zhang Rui stepped forward and grabbed him.
“Haiyang, forget it,” she said quietly. “We’ve already done everything we could. Wanting to save her is our personal choice, but we can’t force other people to risk their lives for her.”
Ke Haiyang immediately fell silent.
Then, to everyone’s utter shock, Lin Mingmei suddenly stepped forward.
“We have to save her.”
Everyone froze.
Lin Mingmei looked directly at Ke Haiyang.
“Where is your sister? Take me there. I’ll go rescue her.”
Everyone: “…”
After recovering from her shock, Luo Xinxin sneered mockingly.
“Oh please, now you’re pretending to be some righteous hero?”
Ke Haiyang clearly did not believe her either.
Earlier, when they begged her for help directly, she had ignored them completely. So how could she suddenly volunteer to save someone now?
“Mingmei, stop fooling around,” Gao Lang scolded while frowning. “Hurry up and clean the room first. There’s not even a proper place to sit.”
Lin Mingmei ignored him completely and instead looked at Qin Yueming.
“You stay here and protect them,” she said calmly. “I’ll go save her.”
Qin Yueming frowned instantly.
“No. You stay here. I’ll go with Ke Haiyang instead.”
How could he possibly allow a young girl to risk herself outside alone?
Ke Haiyang’s eyes immediately lit up.
“Brother Qin, you’re really willing to help?”
Qin Yueming nodded firmly.
He had to go.
If Ke Haiyang was telling the truth, then based on Qin Yueming’s own experience, the younger sister was highly likely in the process of awakening a superpower.
Commander Luo had specifically instructed him that if he encountered anyone else awakening abilities like his own, he was to bring them back whenever possible.
Qin Yueming’s decision instantly delighted Ke Haiyang.
Meanwhile, Luo Xinxin nearly exploded from anger.
Unfortunately for her, Qin Yueming completely ignored her dissatisfaction.
After arranging for Lin Mingmei to stay behind and protect the others, Qin Yueming and Ke Haiyang quickly departed together.
Luo Xinxin was so furious she wanted to smash something, but she could not even bear touching the dusty classroom around her.
“Lin Mingmei,” she ordered arrogantly, “what are you standing around for? Hurry up and clean this place.”
Lin Mingmei merely blinked before turning around and walking toward the door.
“Are you deaf?!” Luo Xinxin shouted angrily while stomping her foot.
Gao Lang hurried over and grabbed Lin Mingmei.
“Mingmei, what’s gotten into you? Why are you suddenly being so disobedient?”
Lin Mingmei glanced coldly at Luo Xinxin.
“Feel free to shout louder,” she said calmly. “I’m sure the nearby zombies will hear you perfectly.”
Luo Xinxin immediately choked on her words in fear, her face flushing bright red.
Then Lin Mingmei turned toward Gao Lang with deep concern in her eyes.
“You seemed to have a slight fever earlier. How are you feeling now? Are you still uncomfortable anywhere?”
Gao Lang felt both touched and helpless.
She was always like this, constantly fussing over him…
Still, he could tell she genuinely cared for him wholeheartedly.
“I’m fine now,” he replied gently.
Lin Mingmei’s expression instantly filled with disappointment.
“You’re really fine? If you feel uncomfortable anywhere, you absolutely must tell me.”
Gao Lang nodded helplessly.
Lin Mingmei continued calmly,
“I’m heading out for a while. Stay here properly. Don’t wander around, and don’t make noise that could attract zombies.”
Gao Lang’s expression changed immediately.
“You’re leaving?” He frowned. “Didn’t Brother Yueming tell you to stay behind and protect us? If you leave too, what are we supposed to do?”
